Disney and broken foot?

I am in week 8 of a broken 5th metatarsal...I was casted for 2 weeks, then in a black walking boot for 4 weeks, I began weight bearing 2 weeks ago! The cast/boot are VERY HOT and get VERY SWEATY, and I have been MISERABLE!!!! I am an ER nurse so have been out of work since I broke my foot....with that being said, I would have definitely gone to DW and rented a wheelchair or even one of those motorized scotters! Good luck

I am a pediatric nurse w/ ortho exp prior. I had a fx 5th metatarsal also, just last year. Just stay off that foot! They didn't prescribe me a boot til 6 wks after the cast. I actually cut my own cast off at 4 wks and ordered a walking boot, because I was so hot/miserable. . I hated being off of work and not be able accomplish anything. I did cancel my trip last year. August in WDW is brutal.

I broke my right ankle in March and spent a total of 8 weeks in either a splint, boot, or cast. I was able to borrow a knee walker from a coworker for that time. Depending on how long your DD needs to stay off her foot, this might be something to look into. I was so miserable the first week because my mobility was so limitted. Since it was so hard to get around, I'd go to one place and stay there until I had a good reason to move. I had to take most of that week off of work as a result.

This is the model I used. It was a complete godsend! It was also a lot of fun -- after being slower than my 89 year old grandmother the first week, I was able to do circles around my parents at the grocery store once I got the walker.

If you check your local medical supply stores, you may be able to rent one. That might actually make your DD feel better about things while she heals as well. It certainly did wonders for my morale!

You couldn't wait until later in the semester? I would recommend postponing. This is a broken foot / leg. Disney can wait rather than being in a sweaty, nasty gross cast in the humid heat of Disney. She won't be able to enjoy the vacation now, but in 8 weeks she could.

There is no postponing this trip. If I didn't have so many school aged children it wouldn't be a problem to take 2 weeks off during the school year. Aside from our already purchased YES tickets (and a Jason Mraz concert in Tampa) this trip is something she has been looking forward to for a very long time! This trip is more for her than anyone else in our family (Disney and Jason Mraz in one trip!). She'll have a great time regardless, trust me, we just have to figure out the best thing for her.....scooter or wheelchair? I'm pretty sure we are going to rent from Walker Mobility, although Apple is cheaper by $55. I just haven't read any reviews about them.

Again, thanks everyone for your input. If you have any pros/cons on scooter vs wheelchair let me know.

We have rented from Walker many times in the past. I am renting from them for our upcoming trip in October. They might not be the cheapest, but their customer service can't be beat.

I'm not sure if they will rent to anyone under 18 though. I would definitely call them and ask. One thing about scooters vs wheelchairs though, scooters are weird getting used to. If you are going to/they will rent for her I would go to your local store and let her practice with one of the scooters there. That way the scooter at the parks isn't so strange to her.

Whichever way you go, you are going to have a great trip!

I'm sorry your daughter was injured. What a bummer.

See if you can rent a knee walker, like this:

Your insurance company may cover it for you, and if you have a healthcare supply place nearby, delivery may even be covered by your insurance. It would be much easier for your daughter to maneuver herself around with the knee walker; it's far less cumbersome than a wheelchair. Good luck!

I saw several people using the knee walker things shown in the previous links during our trip last year. My daughter broke her wrist a week before our Disney trip but was able to do everything she wanted to in the parks and it was October, not August, so the cast wasn't too uncomfortable for her. However, if she had broken her ankle instead of her wrist, we would have postponed our trip.

I just wanted to say that I broke my ankle three weeks before our last trip to Disney. I felt terrible, but I didn't want to cancel the trip. So, I rented a ECV.

I can understand the others that say you should cancel, but Disney is very doable in a cast. Just rent either an ECV or a wheelchair. Take things slow and don't let her overdo it.

either way, it will be an awesome trip. Have a great time and make lots of great memories.

I was diagnosed with a torn tendon and stress fracture in my foot the day before we left for Disney in April. I used a scooter the entire time t Disney and it did put a damper on things like shopping, since I didn't feel like maneuvering the scooter inside stores. I also used a knee walker once I got home, but just for short distances. It wqs a godsend at home but I took it to Great Adventure and wasn't able to use it for more than half an hour, my thigh was burning and the knee on the opposite leg started to hurt from constantly pushing off the ground. It's a good short-term solution but wouldn't work for all day, I don't think. Of course, I'm an over 60, overweight female, not a teenager!

Definitely get a wheel chair and go to guest services to get a little red card. It does definitely help with some of the line situations.

I walked around DC in a walking cast but I was about 6 weeks post-op at that point and was doing well. I definitely wouldn't expect it out of a young kid.

She will be fine. Trust me on this. My DS16 broke his leg at the beginning of May, and we were scheduled to leave on June 4th for WDW. I did push our trip back a few weeks, but that was because he was in a hip to toe cast that would have made things very difficult. He had his long cast removed and replaced with a below the knee walking cast on June 19th, and we left on June 20th. Even with the cast, he had a great time. We rode everything except the water rides (his choice). He did get tired more easily, and it was a slower paced trip. My advice - rent a wheelchair and get a GAC. These two things will make the trip so much easier. Have fun! :goodvibes

My DD had a waterproof cast (on her arm). She is a competitive swimmer and went to swim practice everyday - no problems.

That would depend on the type of fracture. I hope everything works out for OP and her daughter.

Since my injury was in March, I only used the shower model from Dry Cast, but they do carry swimming covers too. My brother grabbed a flyer at the doctor's for this place when I had my splint taken off and my cast put on. I would guess I got a good 2-3 weeks use out of it and it's still in great shape. I was desperate for a shower!

For the person who had knee issues with the knee walker...did you have knee problems before hand? I would guess age might have been a factor there. I'm 30 and overweight and had no problems with that whatsoever....unlike some of my other alternatives. I couldn't use crutches because I couldn't last more than about 3 steps before putting weight on my foot, so they started me off with a wheeled walker and had me hop behind. While I did great at the doctor with it, it was really hard at home because I was so tired! They didn't mention the knee walker (my cousin told me about it) but that was the absolutely BEST option for me.
