I was casually looking at Disney Alaska cruises and it was exponentially more than our Mexican cruise. It was almost double the price- Yikes! Are Alaska cruises typically more than other Mexico or Carribean destinations?

Absolutely.

Much more desirable location with a much more limited season during a peak travel period adds up!

And a single ship.

I have found I can sail on a small vessel (85 passengers, 40 crew) less expensively than booking peak AK on opening day, and the small vessel is all inclusive and overnights in Glacier Bay. No Mickey in a parka but different experience.

Yes, especially DCL. That is why we did not mind using another cruise line to do our Alaska sailing - better prices, move variety of itineraries. I’m sure I‘LL get flamed on these boards for this but it was pretty comparable in almost all regards, including staff and service. Sure it wasn’t Disney and maybe just a little lower in some areas but we felt that it was pretty balanced as they made up for it in other aspects.

Were you looking at the same time of year? Most Alaska cruises take place in the summer, which is a much more expensive time to sail on DCL due to most kids being out of school in summer.

I was not looking during the same time, but one was during spring break time-ish and the other obviously summer.

My husband and I took an Alaska cruise with NCL last year and it was lovely and only $2500 for a veranda. We were thinking it might be nice to take the kids on a Disney Alaska one day, but not for $12000!

Yes, summer is more expensive than spring break, as spring break is different around the country, but summer vacation is pretty universal from mid-June until mid-August.

Well, if OP was looking at the Mexican Riviera cruises, those are spring and fall only, which is a pricing factor.

A fairer comparison for AK is what everyone else charges.
