Disney adding defibrillators to all locations

Not a rumor, but certainly news. Undoubtedly, Disney is reacting primarily out of fear of the almighty lawsuit, but this seems humanitarian, as well (after all, they've weathered the lawsuits from all angles for years, why the change of heart?). The real question though, is how safe are these faster & wilder rides anyway (not necessarily Disney's) & can this faster & wilder trend continue? Lawsuits will always be right around the corner and remember waivers and such do little good as we citizens can't sign away (waive) our basic rights. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a GREAT idea to me. I don't know if it is "lawsuit" driven as you suggest, after all it is more common every day. O'hare & Hartsfield airports have them all OVER the place in their facilities, with the hope that a person is within 1 minute of an AED anywhere in the airports. Most, if not all domestic airliners carry them. My local YMCA has one. Note that the article had the euipment going in all over, not just at the exits to RNR, Space, Splash & BT Mtns.

Most people do not realize how critical this is. If a person suffers from sudden cardiac arrest that results in Ventricular Fibrillation, there is only about a 70% revival chance if defibrillation resulting in the restoration of a sinus rhythm occurs IMMEDIATELY, with the chance of resuscitation decreasing by about 5-8% per MINUTE. Take more than 10 minutes, & you can pretty much scratch someone's name out of the phone book. Time is Muscle, Time is Life.

If a ride or other attraction causes someone to arrest, perhaps they shpould have read the part of the entry sign that says things about pregnancy, heart or back problems, etc.,etc.

Most of the major metropolitan police departments are placing these units in the squad cars also. These little puppies will save more lives in their initial use than the good samaritans who try the precardial thumps (ouch!).

I think Disney is ahead of the game on this one. Of course it's got a legal perspective (hey - they are one of the biggest corporations in the world), but it speaks to the safety of their patrons more than the safety net of the legal advisors.

That supposed to be the way Disney operates - with vision of future things to come.

dmermod & JimB, I agree with your perspectives, but...Let me ask, does the use of the defib's offer a possible malpractice angle in and of themeselves? Who would be qualified to use these devices?

dmermod, you'll have to refresh my memory as to why I owe you a beer in Orlando...But, if I do, I'm good for it! In fact, I'm probably good for two. In fact, I think I'll go have one right now!

Could you image one of those young teenaged CM's quickly grabbing the pads and slapping them on some poor old person who has a gas episode.

I would hope that the CM's who will be working around the newly placed life saving devices will get the proper training.

I am also hoping that there is a good sam clause in Florida (don't know tho). Just like the CM's who are Red Cross certified, their will most likely be a program in place for training (again, I hope!).

On the beer thing - you, me and the baron got pretty heated a few months ago, and all decided to have a tall one in orlando sometime. Can't remember the thread (just like you, only I'm an old fart so I suffer from CRS syndrome), just remember the beer. THAT !! I can remember.

dmermod, if I owe a beer I owe a beer! We'll have to get one of those Rumor Board meets planned again!

I live in Florida and I'm not sure of any Good Sam laws here. As South Florida is usually voted among the more unfriendly places to live each year we probably don't have them (no one cares)! We are considering passing a law that would make Road Rage legal, though...The problem is not enough people know how to vote to pass it!

You're right about the increased negativity lately, too. I like discussing things about Disney and I don't mind discussing negative things as well, but incessent bashing isn't much fun to read or respond to.

Good discussions are hard to find. Unbiased and without malice are even harder to find.

I must agree that Disney has done some things that aren't in the best interest of their consumer public. But I still think it's one of the best institutions that we have at our disposal for enjoyment.

Captain - the AED (depending on the model) is about as "brainless" a piece of equipment as anything in the world today, but YES, a certain amount of training is required just to be familiar with it's operation.

The good thing is that an AED will NOT shock someone who does not need it, so the "gas pain" scenario is not an issue.

Additionally, there IS a "Good Samaritan" law in Florida, so, once again, that is not an issue. About the only way to misuse an AED is to leave it in the cabinet it is stored in or to not know how to push the "ON" button.

Still say it's a great idea.

Mr moose - since you seem to be focused on the lawsuit angle, if a member of your family keels over in an Outback Restaurant, will you sue because they don't have one???

JimB, I too, think it's a great idea...Thanks for the information (I was clueless...Even about Fl's good sam law, but as a fellow Floridian I'm sure you could understand my humor...I hope).

I like that Disney is still doing things that are basically for the good of the guests, if it helps prevent some lawsuits, well...Thant's goo, too!

Heart Safe WDW

The CM's can be easily trained to save a life and people like myself can use one as well. The goal is to have them as readily available and as widely useable as a fire estinquisher.

The AED requires no training and is intended to be used by the general public. The instructions are simple pictures that anyone with average intelligence can follow. Most likely the company that sold the units will provide familiarization training to the staff of the purchaser. They are an important tool in pre-hospital care but they do not replace the need for quick response by an advanced life support ambulance and the accompanying drug therapy, All of which are provided at WDW by the fine men and women of Reedy Creek emergency services.
