I'm going to try and convince my mother to come do the Princess weekend with me in February, and do the 5k, since I don't think she's quite ready for a Half, given that she's never run. She does walk, though.

For those of you who have done the Family 5k events, are there walkers? Obviously it would have to be a very fast clip, but I think I could convince her to do it if she wouldn't have to run.

Even with the posted 16 minute pace the Jan and Feb 5ks are walker friendly. You never hit a public street therefore pressure is off to clear the course. I have read several reports from 20 minute pacers.

I've never done one, but I'm pretty sure they have the same 16 min. mile pace requirement as the other races. I'm sure you'll find lots of walkers.

I walked/ran to first Princess 5K! I saw a LOT of walkers! I never heard anything about being swept from the course.....not sure if others have heard of/been swept.

It was lots of fun!!! So much to see and great characters to get pictures with!

My DH and I both walked the Family Fun Run (Up, Up, and Away) this past January at WDW. Had a great time, and got my first medal! :thumbsup2 Inspired me to train harder and I just finished my first Half Marathon relay at Hershey yesterday. Now I have 2 medals!! :woohoo: Be careful, it's addicting! But it's also a whole lot of fun, especially sharing it with your family. BTW, my DH and I are both over 50. My DS also participated in the race yesterday, as a runner. Being on the same course with him and being together at the finish line was priceless, and something I will never forget. :goodvibes

Mindy,

Am I to understand that you walked the Half Marathon in Hershey? I was contemplating the Princess Half Marathon as a walker b/c I can walk a 12:40 mile, but I'm still working on my run. The longest I've walked at a clip is 8 1/2 miles with the 12:40 pace. Just curious.

I finished the half marathon relay at Hershey this weekend too! Granted, I ran (the second leg, Mom did the first leg), so I apologize to the OP for being off topic here, but its nice to know that other DIS folks were on the course there.

But as for the original question, my mom (in her 50's) actually is a runner, albeit a slow one, and she entered the 5K last January at Disney hoping to run. She complained afterwords that there were so many walkers that she couldn't run. I don't know how much to believe her, but I know as a spectator that there were plenty of people crossing the line walking, so I wouldn't worry about it. The race ended 2 hours before Epcot had to open for the day, so I doubt that they were super strict about the pacing.

From what I've seen, the Disney races are very walker friendly. As long as walkers (or any participant) are keeping the pace requirement, they should be fine and have a lot of fun as well! I am hoping that there is a Disney 5K in my parents' future as well. :)

Yes, I walked, but to be clear, I was part of a relay. I walked the first part, and my DH did the second. It was supposed to be a "switch at the half way point" thing, but they kind of goofed and I actually ended up doing almost a full 7 miles. Hershey offered 4 options: walk the entire Half Marathon, run the entire Half, and relay options for both walkers and runners (again, in a team of two with each member doing half). My goal is to do an entire Half at WDW in 2012, but I had only done 5k's prior to this. It was a great race for my first one at a longer distance.
