Disinfecting your room before stay?

We usually take the covers off the bed. and wipe down the bathroom and sink area. thats about it! never got sick or been grossed outin a disney hotel ..

i have to say i cant stand potty hoverers <spelling>! i will never understand the idea of hovering over a toilet! if ya sit on it properly your chances of catching something is next to none untill ya factor in those hovering splashes!

sorry i have a 3 year old and it really grosses me out taking her to the public potty! thanks for letting me vent ;)

Just remember when you are spraying, that the guests that come in after you (or their children) may be highly allergic to Lysol (or some of its ingredients). I am, and if it is sprayed around me, or in a room within a couple of hours of my entereing it, my ears (of all things) swell up about the size of my face. Really freaky. I have the same problem with Perfume. bummer, cause I like perfume.

I know where you are coming from though. :thumbsup2

Scariest post yet! I never thought of what others had sprayed in the room. Scary as all the gross stuff they leave. :scared1:

The only time I have ever done this was at a HOJO I was *FORCED* to stay in when we went to Hershey Park this past summer with two friends. Two words...never again!

I feel 100% comfortable with WDW mousekeeping. I have never had any problems and don't anticipate them.

Ok, after reading this thread I'm getting a little apprehensive about our upcoming hotel stays. I just cam back from WalMart where I bought 8 pillow covers, they say they're supposed to trap mites, allergens, etc. They're about $4 and I bought 8 of them, 2 for each of us. Perhaps I should buy more, in case we order up extra pillows? I never really thought to worry about pillows, but how often do you really think those pillows get washed in hotels? Too bad they don't use those disposable pillows, like in hospitals. However, we will have a sleeper sofa that my ds will probably use. How to protect it? Just cover the whole thing with an extra sheet, like I usually do. Or, perhaps we could all just wear surgical masks? :rotfl2:

You can really only worry so much about OPG (other people's germs). That's why we have immune systems! Also, think about all the people spraying Lysol all over beds, pillows, sofas, etc in hotels. It might end up creating super germs, that have mutated into something that is resistant to cleaners, antibiotics, etc. Probably the pillow covers I will either forget to pack them or leave them in the hotel when we leave. Oh, well, just makes me feel better!

Oh, here's another little fun fact -- I saw on a mattress commercial that the average mattress actually almost doubles in weight over several years with all the mites that are growing in it. Now how can I sleep, laying there thinking "I'm not alone!" :scared1:

I was never a freak about germs after years of pleasure and business travel, except for the comforters & not walking barefoot on the carpet, until I ended up in the hospital from our last Disney vacation. It was a big splurge, for us anyway, to stay on site and our whole family got sick. Fortunately, I was the only one who ended up in the hospital & they tested for everything after finally resorting to a chemo drug to stop my vomiting. Their diagnosis..."cruise ship illness" - where they turn the rooms over too fast w/o cleaning properly...

haven't read the whole thread but wondering what you all do about the germs on the bioscanners to get into the parks, the ride handlebars and such, after hugging a character - those costumes are not cleaned that often, etc...do you take something with you?

you know, it really depends on the housekeeper and their mood that day! I know for myself that after working in a hotel I check certain things before I feel good about the cleanliness of the room. Check to see if your sheets are tucked and on the right side up. If they are, it's likely your room was done by someone paying attention to their job. I also know that most do their best to get rid of them, but the best way to see if your shower/tub has been cleaned properly is to check for hairs on the wall and the drain. Other things are pretty easy to clean and are generally ok! Those are the two biggies you should always check! Hope that helps!

I've had to take that drug, too, when I was seriously ill while pregnant. It was a miracle drug, but SO expensive (I think it was like $40 a pill/dissolvable tablet). Zofran is what I had to take. Anyway, sorry about your experience. That sounds like really bad luck. I've stayed on the WDW property more times than I can count and have been fortunate enough to not get sick, but it could happen anywhere at anytime. Like I said in a previous post, my boyfriend and his family own 8+ hotels and the standards are the same at the big names that they own. I could get sick just as easily in a hotel owned by someone that I love by one that I pick at random. Scary, isn't it, but it's just part of life. I'm not going to ruin my enjoyment of traveling by worrying about it! :goodvibes :thumbsup2

also clean everything. It's not so much the germs or worry about getting flu or cold, it's about the disgusting things left behind by previous occupants. I've watched all the news shows and know what they find on remotes, telephone, door handles, bedspreads, etc.

Oh man, now what are you going to do about all the disgusting things left behind on handrails, bus seats, computer kepboards, finger scans etc? Do you bring your clorox to the park too?

I always carry individual handi-wipes in my bag.
We don't use them after each time we use the bioscanner, touch handlebars, etc...but.....
I pull them out before we stop to eat & then pass one to each person in the family. I usually wait until after we have all handled the menus & the waiter has collected them. Do you realize how many people handle the menus in a day & then we are suppossed to eat our meal?

Those are great...last time I brought a pack of 24 & didn't have enough for our 9 day trip....I'm bringing more next month.

What do you think is all over the rest of the world?

Hmmm you all are making me wonder if I should ask the front desk people when I check in, if the person(s) there before me rented any XXX pay-per-view flicks....before we touch the remote. :rolleyes1

Seriously, I can be somewhat germophobic, mostly when it comes to handling money, I just use the hand sanitizer stuff. Other than that, I have yet to become sick on a vacation. This year, we will have a washer and dryer in our villa, so if I feel grossed out about sheets, pillowcases, etc., I wouldn't hesitate to thrown them in for a good washing before we use them. If our room is gross when we get there, you can be sure my DH will be on the phone with the front desk immediately. I let him handle the griping, since he is so good at it!! :teeth:

I don't worry about disinfecting everything we come into contact with, instead, here's what I do --

I buy everyone a can of Lysol. We spray ourselves from head-to-toe at least 10 times a day, including our hair! It beats chasing every last germ with a Lysol wipe! :rotfl2:

However, for those of you who do take Lysol/Clorox wipes, please mark them clearly and don't confuse with wipes intended for your backside. Cloroxing your butt is NOT recommended!! Also, when staying in a hotel with one bathroom, do keep your items seperate. At home with three bathrooms we just don't look all that closely at what's what, that is, until last trip dh brushed his teeth with Monistat! :lmao:

We will be at Disney exactly 14 days from today! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

OMG!! You guys are KILLING ME!!!! ROFL!!!!

Let me tell you a story.

I used to clean rooms when I was a teen.I saw some nasty stuff in doing so,but the worst was a loaded gun a traveler had left in a drawer.

Now to this day when I check into a hotel I check drawers,Heaven forbid a child were to find that.I don't worry so much about the germs, what are the chances I will get one that will kill me or my children?A loaded gun though would do it.

Been seeing quite a bit of news footage on "bed bugs" and the re-emergence these creatures have been making. I think a lot more about them..than germs. The Dateline feature indicated that they were wiped out here in the US in the 50's because of the pesticides we used back then. However they have thrived in foriegn countries. With the increase in foreign travel these critters have made themselves very comfortable again in the the US and particulary in our hotels. We've seen a poor couple featured on the news here that brought them home (just pack em up in your luggage)..once they are in your home...they are extremely diffiucult to get rid of and require professional extermination. Be prepared to loose some of your belongings..furniture, carpeting and the like. Dateline indicated there is no class distiction involved here..dump or deluxe..they are back with a vengence. They featured some pretty expensive hotels that have a problem with them. Not to be paranoid..but to make people aware of what to look for. Indicated how to remove the hotel headboards..and look in the seams..and also in the seams of your drawers. Not really a good idea to put your clothes in the drawers apparently..that is one way to bring the critters home with you. Also..spots on the wall that you may wonder how they got there..very often a bug that has "fed"..and leaving a blood stain.(gross, I know!). I was very surprised to learn that they do not change the BLANKETS after each guest. Sheets and pillow cases yes, blankets are on a rotation basis the same as the comforters. I think that's just plain gross regardless. I always assumed the blanket on the bed was new for each guest. WRONG. They say to remove the bedspread..and don't put it near your hanging clothes.
I think the bed bug issue is more of a concern to me than say germs. I believe if the room appears dirty, I'd ask for another. However the bed-bug situation takes a bit of investigating and may not outwardly be visable until you have the bites or infestation to prove it. A little bit of preventative investigation upon entering the room, would go a long way toward easing my mind given the re-emergence of these disgusting insects. My kids went to Philadelphia last week..and they did just what it said on the Dateline show..pop off the head board..It was quick and went on just as easily. They don't use the drawers and the room appeared otherwise clean..removed the comforters. May be kind of gross to think about..but things change and you have to be careful ..who wants to bring them home and ruin your house.
