Dishwasher Recommendations?

Hi, Does anyone have any dishwasher recommendations? Ours is leaking! It is a GE - wow, what a hunk of junk. It's not even 5 years old and it already went kaput. Our builder put it in when we built our house.

I am considering Bosch, Maytag or Whirlpool. I will never consider a GE for any appliance after this. We've also had problems with our GE stove and GE washing machine (both less than 5 years old).

Thanks in advance,

Krista

I love our Kitchen Aid dishwasher! Yep - it replaced the piece of junk GE dishwasher the the previous owners put in the house. The was the first time I ever got to pick a dishwasher.

BTW - We picked a Kitchen Aid because my mom has had great luck with hers. The first one she had lasted about 20 years, she bought another one - but they moved from that house when it was about 5 years old. When they built their retirement home - yup - another Kitchen Aid.

Oh! Then I guess you don't want to hear that I'm thrilled with the GE Profile dishwasher I bought. It's GREAT!! Good luck finding something you're happy with.

Bosch, Kitchen Aid, Maytag in that order. My dream dishwasher would be a commercial Hobart washer like I have it work (Starbucks). 15 min cycle, gets over 180F, and everything comes off!

I had a Bosch in my old house. It was GREAT! You don't even know it's running.

I also love the Fisher & Paykel model with two drawers. It's a great idea - especially great for all those kiddie cups and plates that are taking over my kitchen. That's the one I'm putting in next time!

I have owned 2 Whirlpools in my life. If I ever need to buy another dishwasher it would be another Whirlpool. The one feature my whirlpool has that I didn't see the last time I went dishwasher shopping was the silverware holder in the door. This makes for more dishes I can get onto the bottom shelf.

My daughter just bought a dishwasher for her new home and bought a Whirlpool too.

I have the Kenmore version of the Kitchen Aid, and I love it! It has a stainless steel tub, is the extra large version, and it is soooo quiet! The quiet is what really sold me on it because we have a two story family room right off the kitchen, and every noise carries upstairs. Sometimes, I can hardly tell this one is running.

Ratings DISHWASHERS

All but a few of the models we tested will clean dishes well, so your choice may hinge on style, energy efficiency, noise, or brand reliability.
The Ratings rank models by performance. The Quick Picks highlight models you might want to consider based on how they scored and on factors such as reliability, features, and price.

Quick Picks

A great value if you don't need all the bells and whistles:
8 Amana, $350, CR Best Buy

The Amana ADB1200AW[W] (8) offers excellent washing from a reliable brand, making it a CR Best Buy. It has a clean design with a one-piece door and touchpad controls, but lacks niceties such as adjustable tines and flatware slots. You can get it with a stainless-steel exterior for $450.

For stainless steel at a modest price:
6 KitchenAid, $580
25 Frigidaire, $500

Many new models are available with a stainless exterior, so find one you like and see what it costs in stainless. Besides the Amana ADB1200AW[W] (8), we'd highlight the KitchenAid KUDI01IL[BL] (6), with a stainless exterior and a stainless tub; and the Frigidaire FDB2510L[C] (25), $500 with a stainless-steel exterior that resists smudges and a plastic tub.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're willing to pay more for style, quiet operation, and flexible loading:
5 Kenmore (Sears), $870
10, 11 KitchenAid, $830-$1200
20 Fisher & Paykel, $1200

Fine choices include the Kenmore (Sears) Elite 1648[2] (5), available with stainless exterior for $950; KitchenAid KUDP01DL[WH] (10), $900 with stainless exterior; and KitchenAid Superba KUDS01FL[SS] (11), $1,200 with stainless exterior. All three have stainless tubs. The KitchenAid KUDS01FL[SS], has totally hidden controls; on the Kenmore (Sears) Elite 1648[2] (5) and KitchenAid KUDP01DL[WH] (10), the controls are partially hidden. The Fisher & Paykel DD603[W] (20) is pricey but has an unusual design: two drawers that can be run simultaneously or separately. It costs $1,350 with stainless finish. (A single-drawer model costs $700.) Note that we don't have data on this brand's reliability.

For flexible loading at a modest price:
4 Kenmore (Sears), $520
13 Maytag, $480
21 GE, $500

The Kenmore (Sears) 1637[2] (4) was among the best on all counts, but it has a long, 135-minute cycle. The Maytag MDB7600AW[W] (13) and GE GSD6900J[WW] (21) were faster but used more energy. The GE is a bit noisier than both.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For excellent performance, a modest price, and low operating costs:
9, 24 Kenmore (Sears), $330-$570

Three Kenmore models were among the most frugal with water and energy without compromising wash performance. Besides the Kenmore (Sears) 1637[2] (4), consider two of its brandmates: the Kenmore (Sears ) 1638[2] and Kenmore (Sears) 1552[2] (24).

Whatever you get I'd make sure it's an Energy Star rated dishwasher. I have a Maytag, but it's not Energy Star (it was a gift) It will save on your electric bill and water too!

I like the Extra Big Tubs, this way you can put your pots and pans in there as well, if you like to. The Quiet Pack makes a big difference with noise.

We just put in a Miele in the new kitchen..so far, so good, but I've only used it 4 times.

I've had Whirlpool's in my last 2 houses and you can bet that I'll be getting another one for this house- the one we plan to stay in for 25 years!
I did learn while shopping that Kitchen Aid's are made by Whirlpool.

This is the one my mom just got and it's awesome. This is the one I'd get next when mine dies.

My wife and I were just discussing dishwashers this afternoon. She hasn't used our in close to 10 years. I'm afraid if she ever does turn it on again that it will leak. She would much rather have the cupboard space than the dishwasher that we have, but there is no way to replace it now because our cabinets have gone out of production. So she uses the dishwasher to store pots and pans.

Thanks for the info on dishwashers. I may have to surprise her and the kids with one someday. Only problem will be where to store those extra pots and pans.

We had to buy a new dishwasher last January and, after much shopping around, we got a Maytag MDB8600 from Sears. It was #12 on the Consumer Reports list. I LOVE IT! The feature that sold me was the third rack for large, shallow items like platters or roasters. The middle rack is adjustable upward in height by about 3 inches to make the bottom rack even more useful. And it is QUIET!!! We can actually talk while the dishwasher is running!

I'd love to replace my bottom-of-the-line Whirlpool that came with my Florida place but DH says not yet. If and when it will be another Maytag with similar features.

We had a Kitchenaid dishwasher in our old house and it was really nice. Now that being said, I do like Whirlpool appliances alot. We have had them last a long time with little maintenance needed. We just bought a Whirlpool stove and so far so good. We will definately look for Whirlpool in the future.

I'm with Towncrier and his DW on this one. I do not want a dish washer! When I got my new kitchen 9 years ago I purposely left the dishwasher out in lieu of more cabinet space. I find doing the dishes by hand something I enjoy doing. I never thought I would ever come to that realization when I was a teenager, at home, being forced to do the dishes!
BTW, I have 30 year old dishes and glasses that look brand new because they've never seen the inside of a dishwasher.

Krista,
You would happen to live in Frederick, MD? LOL! My house was also equipped with the "GE Builder's Special". Let's see, in just under six years:

Dishwasher peed on the floor for about six months before we had to go get a new one. We got a Maytag quiet series 200...almost wanted to bring it with us when we moved last month! It is awesome.

Washing Machine went through two motors and sounded like an airplane engine. It died a week before we sold the house.

Gas stove went through two ignitors in the first two years we had it!

We hated the GE products so much that we had our builder delete the GE appliances in the new house.

I've also had experience with Frigidaire and it worked great. My mom laments that she got a great KitchenAid in her house right before she moved.

If you go commercial, like everyone else has said, anything Hobart makes is bulletproof. I occasionally keep my eyes peeled for a restaurant closing sale-I want a hobart convection oven!!
