Dishwasher Recommendations

I have a 3 year old Samsung. Bought it to match my refrigerator, which I love. The Samsung dishwasher is super quiet, and stainless inside and out. But, I have had it serviced 5X in the last 15 months. And now, it is broken again, and 2 months out of warranty. I had the BB 3 year extended warranty. Now I am screwed. BB only guarantees their repairs for 30 days. Exact same problem, every time.

SO, Samsung is NOT recommended. BB said they will do nothing, to try Samsung. (PS BB did the install). Samsung says, I am out of luck. i said, I paid $550 for this thing, plus tax, just 3 years ago. After I whined, they promised to call me back, but they have not. Boo Samsung.

Oh, a salesman at Sears told me, if you have granite counter, (or maybe other nice counters?) to make SURE the dishwasher can be screwed in from the side, not only from the top. The cheaper ones only have it on the top.

I am waiting for my local repair guy to look at my broken Samsung before I give up on it. HE warranties HIS parts and labor for a year.

My first DW lasted 17 years, the only thing wrong with it was the racks would rust through, the second one lasted 12 years, same thing with the rack, but we have hard water. Now into my second year with the new one, racks are nylon, therefore they shouldn't rust. The first and third were Kennmore, made by Whirlpool, the second was a Whirlpool. The newer ones all take longer to wash, but they use less water. Mine does have a one hour wash that I use on occasion, but it uses 4 times as much water. Pleased with this one. It has a stainless interior and the top rack can raise or lower depending on your needs.

Our dishwasher died about a month ago. I went twice during the holiday sales and wrote down several possible model numbers. All of them had bad reviews.

The Bosch models seemed pretty good except that multiple people said that they smelled terrible if you didn't run them every day. I also saw a suggestion that the ones with the controls on the front of the door were not as good as the ones with the controls on the top of the door.

Now the sales are over and we're still hand washing dishes. So frustrating!

Followup on the Samsung mess of a dishwasher. My repair guy said he does not even want to look at it (and have to charge me). Since all major parts were replaced already, he thinks it is electrical and would be about impossible to figure out. He recommended KitchenAid. He also said contact Samsung on the old one, who told me "too bad, so sad." Just like Best Buy did. 3 year old dishwasher, heading for the dump. Oh, wait, 3 years 2 months.

I bought a Kitchen Aid from Lowes. Waiting for them to install this week. FREE installation on KitchenAid, and free Cascade tablets for a year.

The only fun I had was slamming Best Buy for their repair service/warranty program. On FACEBOOK. So complete strangers chimed in, saying BB, replace her dishwasher already! Haha. Of course, they did not. They responded, that they are sure all those repairs done under warranty cost more than I paid for the coverage. so then I said, YES, I am SURE it did, because they replaced lots of expensive parts, misdiagnosing the problem, and never got it fixed for more than 6 weeks at a time. I said to them, Lowes will replace a appliance that needs 5 repairs.

Sadly, Samsung has no appliacance related FB page.

We have a Kitchen-aid and love it. We've had it about six years without any problems.

Wish I could get the lifetime cascade pacs. Those get expensive!

Lifetime, no, but free pacs for a year. That was a mail in rebate, they will send me coupons for the free Cascasde Action Pacs. Everywhere I called, the installation was $179-189, including my repair guy, so I saved that at least. Dishwasher was onsale for $649, more than I wanted to spend, but when I factored in the free install and cascade, it was more or less where I expected to be. I made sure to get one that could be side mounted, so I will be ok when I get the granite or other new countertop in a few months.

Out of fear, I bought the 4 year extra warranty, which for LOWES starts after the 1 year manufacturer one. BB runs their 3 year concurrent with the one year manufacturer one, so you are really only getting 2 years from them, or something like that.

Bosch, it is almost silent. We've had it for about 3 years now, no issues at all, it cleans everything great. We also thought the lack of a drying cycle might be a problem, but it is not at all - we don't miss the heating element a bit. In fact, it's reassuring to know that it is one less thing that could cause a fire!

Here is the one we got:

We bought a fairly expensive Bosch to replace an inexpensive Kenmore. I liked the Kenmore better. MUCH better.

The Bosch is quieter though.

Our landlords just replaced the Maytag? Dishwasher in our house with a Bosch. So far, I'm not impressed with the Bosch. It doesn't clean well and even though it is bigger, it is decidedly NOT Tardis like and is smaller on the inside than the original. It is quiet but that is all I can say about it positively.

I have a Whirlpool, it's been nice so far. Had it about a year and a half with no problems so far. It is on the cheap end of things I know. The thing I was told to watch out for is to make sure you get one with grey wires....they make them with some kind of cheaper white plastic coating that is bad about chipping off and makes your dishwasher useless. I think that problem only exists on the lowest of the low bargain basement model dishwashers.

YES, this is exactly what I was going to respond with! We bought our Samsung dishwasher 3 years ago too (before it had time to get reviews online), to match the fridge (which I love!). We've had NOTHING but trouble from this dishwasher! We've had 3 repairmen come out to replace different parts...but it's never been a real fix. We bought ours from Lowe's and they've referred us to Samsung - no help there.

I finally just gave up on getting it changed out...now I just hope it totally dies soon so we can replace it with something that actually works! What a waste of money...and it doesn't even clean the dishes!

Another vote for saying NO to Samsung dishwashers!

Kenmore Elite Dishwashers are rated #'s 1 2 3 and 4 in consumer reports right now. There are also some fantastic sales on them for the July 4th Holiday.
And the Kenmore Elite Dishwasher models at #'s 1- 4 are: 12793, 12803, 12783, and 12763. # 5 is Kenmore Elite 12773. All these models are retail priced over $1000, so they are pricey. They all scored excellent in the following categories: washing, energy use, and noise (noise meaning that they are really really really quiet). They all score very good in energy use.

Looking at Consumer reports ratings, unfortunately, as the price goes down, the rating/performance goes down.

We have a 14 yr old Kenmore and it is still working fine. DH wants a SS one so we've been looking. Sear's charges a lot more to install.

I have a 4 year old LG dishwasher (and refrigerator). Both have been nothing but trouble. I will never buy another LG.

Wow, I could have written that myself. Ours are 5 years old and once they break again they are in the garbage. Both have been repaired numerous times and the dishwasher was replaced by LG because it was fixed 3 times in one month. No LG is allowed in this house anymore.

What does your Samsung do? Mine flashes 2 lights when it quits, "heavy" and "quick". Which means a problem with the water level. Or who knows. They replaced the motor, computer board, water thingamabob, and more. It would have been cheaper to give me a new machine. And they were just guessing, the various service guys had no idea. They just replaced major stuff and hoped it would work I think. I guess by taking it all apart each time, it would reset something, because it would seem to work ok for a few weeks or months.

Whatever. I know, every brand has it's lemons. It is sad that appliances used to last so much longer, they only last 1/2 as long now.

I hate my Kenmore Elite. I paid $1200 CND two years ago. Dishes don't get clean, cycles are very long and it is very very loud. I can't say anything positive about it. I believe it is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. I really let the salesperson at Sears con me on this one.

I am with you on that one. We replaced a 13 year old dishwasher with a Kennmore Elite. I agree with everything you said about it. In fact the 13 year old washer did the same job if not better than the Elite that we have now. Won't ever buy another.

We've had the power board replaced several times and another part in the panel (I don't remember the name...harness? or wiring? maybe). Mine is finicky - when you try to power it on, sometimes it'll work, sometimes it won't. There's no rhyme or reason. It's like you have to catch it in a good mood! :flower3: We just finally gave up on the service guys too, they had no idea either.

I've learned to deal with it deciding itself when to cut on (I just push the button and see, then come back later and try again...sometimes it takes 10 times to start it!). But the biggest irritant for me is that it doesn't clean the dishes - and I pre-clean them, I never put really "dirty" dishes in there. I've changed detergents, added several Jet Dry type options... still not cleaning right. It bakes the dirty spots on instead. Then I have to soak everything in hot water & vinegar and super scrub everything. I think my blood pressure is rising just from typing this! haha

Like I said, I'm counting down until this one officially bites the dust! :hourglass

In the market for a new dishwasher myself, been reading reviews at all the sites. Isn't it sad that no matter which brand you decide on, people have both good and bad reviews. Reading thru this thread makes you even more confused on which brand to get than ever. Bottom line is there is no perfect one out there, things aren't made as well these days as years ago. Whatever you get will probably only last 5-8 years and will be back in the market for a new one again. Seems to be a constant cycle for all appliances these days. We have more info at our disposal but doesn't make it an easier decision.
