I want to start taping shows while I'm at work but can't figure out the whole DISH/VCR thing.

I just called DISH and a DVR will cost $6 a month. If I don't get a phone line connected to the TV, it will cost an additional $5 a month. Does anyone know if it is expensive to get a phone line connected to the TV?

Thanks!

Are you just now thinking of signing up for Dish or a long time subscriber? I would think any new contract would include a dvr, which they will show you how to use during installation. It really is easy. If you've been with Dish for years and don't have a dvr, you may still be able to record to VHS.

Ok, the contract is for two years; the DVR is free; the service is $6 a month. If I don't get the TV connected to a phone line, it will cost an additional $5 a month.

try going with Direct Tv instead of Dish. We don't have to have a phone line connection and you will get a DVR for new customers.

If you are staying wht Dish, a phone line is easy to connect. Find your nearest line, buya split and some phone cable and just run it yourself behind/under furniture.

thanks! but where would i plug the other end of the phone cable? into the back of the DVR?

I'm not tech savvy......but there is a cable from the phone jack in the dining room to somewhere behind our entertainment center, so I'm assuming it goes in the back of the DVR.

I'd pull it out and check for you, but every time I move that stuff, it stops working and DH isn't home to fix it.

We use DISH network and have two DVR receivers. We don't have a home phone, so they told us to connect our DSL line into the main receiver to avoid the additional charge. It must work, because we've never been charged extra.

We have Dish Network in 4 rooms and don't have a phone connected to any of them. We love the DVR. It took me a while to figure it out, but now we love it. The only bad thing is that when you set up the timer, you can't watch another channel like you could on the VCR's.

Hi Debbie -

It is cheaper for each DVR? Do you pay extra each month because you don't have the DVRs connected to a phone? thanks.

the the phone line would connect to the back of the DVR. On Direct Tv you can record 2 channels at one and only that will stop you from watching something else. If I am only recording one show, I can watch anything else I want.

We have a DVR and we just ran a phone cord from the wall jack to the receiver and plugged it in. It is very easy AND you get a pop up on the tv that shows caller id when the phone rings. It is really nice knowing who has to get up and hunt for the portable phone :lmao:

Thanks everyone - sounds like a good deal and now I can start taping David Letterman again!!

I'm changing from DirecTV to Dish -- no reason, except my equipment from DirecTV is getting old and needs replaced. DirecTV doesn't seem interested in working with me (they want to charge me all kinds of ridiculous things to replace my equipment, so I said buh bye!).

So here's my package from Dish: free equipment (dish, receiver, and DVR), free installation (to answer one of your questions -- so I don't have to worry where the phone line goes), free HBO and Showtime for three months, free Cinemax for one year, and $15 off my monthly costs for one year. The DVR service is only $5 per month.

Then the guy tries to tell me there is a $50 activation fee, and I told him NO. Deal breaker. Get it waived or I hang up right now. He checked with his manager, and what do you know? He is allowed to waive that fee once per week, and I am that once. What. Ever.

Make sure you are getting all this (and more if you can!), and you will LOVE the DVR.
