Disflix is NOT part of The DIS

After watching some conversations in chat during today's DIS Unplugged, I just wanted to point out to everyone that Disflix is NOT part of The DIS.

For those who don't know, Disflix is a subscription service that is breaking many Disney Parks rules, and is being slated and is getting rather nasty online.

I wouldn't want The DIS getting a bad name for something they are in no way related to. So therefore wanted to make it entirely clear that it is in no way affiliated with The DIS.

I just noticed this controversy. If it is not breaking any form rules could someone explain what is/was going on?

It is a group of Disney related bloggers putting on a paid for content service. You can research more on your own if you want. It's an interesting venture to say the least.

I'd rather not get into a big discussion about it on here (thats happening over on Twitter), but just search #Disflix on Twitter, and you'll find more. It is breaking Disney Parks Policy (point f in the image linked below...)

Disflix has though just now announced that it is shutting down and will no longer be offering this service...

Good! Trying to charge people $10 a month! It was just cheeky (and greedy)

Hmmm, Quite a few Disney sites could be guilty of that

Disflix was going to be different to most other sites who produce content. Disflix was going to charge a mandatory monthly subscription fee in lieu for the content, whereas every other Disney site I know of offers the content for free via YouTube etc. and makes their money through monetization on their videos/content (i.e. ads). They are therefore not breaking Disney Parks policy.

Its a fine line really. I think if this venture wasn't shut down Disney might have cracked down on even free/ad youtube driven people.

Yes, most definitely. Which would have probably seen the end of a lot of Disney fan sites and Disney vlogs. Imagine the DIS without its YouTube content!? Or TheTimTracker without videos?! (for example...)

It could have and honestly still can have a very chilling impact on the Disney online community.

Things like what touring plans does or any site/creator that uses patreon (plus don't flame, this is a valid grey area). Honestly this could be the thing that sparks Disney to take a more proactive stance against stuff like this. I think Disney has allowed the grey area because vlogs/the various youtube channels and websites do a lot of free and effective advertisement for Disney.

I worry this could be the thing, even as a failure, that could change Disney's mind and make the company enforce their rules without allowing for the grey area.

Most definitely, I sincerely hope it doesn't impact the online Disney community though. Many content creators simply wouldn't survive without AdSense etc. As minimal as the AdSense revenue is (if you are unaware, it is literally cents...), it is still important. There would be no benefit to The DIS, for example, paying hundreds of dollars to go out and cover something if they can't earn their costs back (and make a profit, of course, all content creators are running a business at the end of the day).

I agree, Patreon is certainly a grey area. But the difference I see between Patreon and what Disflix was going to be, is that Patreon offers additional bonus content for a voluntary subscription. It'd be different if, for example, all the DIS content/shows became Patreon-only. Then it'd 100% be breaking Disney Park rules. Becoming a Patron offers extra content as a thanks for voluntary support, and most content is still available for free outside of Patreon.

Vloggers/YouTube certainly provides a lot of advertisement for Disney. After watching The DIS' coverage on Club Villain last year, I went out and booked it for my family trip. It was not even on my radar before I watched the video, and by me booking it, Disney earned another $400 and it didn't cost them a penny to advertise to me.
