Discovery Island??

I was reading a book, and it said there was a small island across from the Contemperary called Discovery Island. It was a wildlife park of some sort.
Does this still exist?!?!? The book was publihed in 1985. So it is pretty dated.

Disney closed Discovery Island several years ago. I never went there myself but I had been by it on the boats from the MK to Ft. Wilderness. There was some exotic wildlife on it as I understand- mostly birds if memory serves.

Most of what was left was moved to Animal Kingdom (including the name "Discovery Island").

Its been rumored that they might make the island a Honeymoon getaway with cottages on the water. Yeah I cant wait to see the price on one of those.

well actually it would be farely easy for them, since the boat goes right by there. Make a central kitchen and say 30 bungaloos

Man if it is a rumor and disney see's this they better give me credit for it.

I'm thinking a DVC resort would be nicer!! Heck, how hard could it be to run water and sewer lines across the lake?! Maybe they could even expand the monorail over for a quick stop!!

Seriously though, I miss Discovery Island. I was only there a couple times, but it was a nice getaway and you could walk it a slow pace. It was quite peaceful over there. You still see lots of the same birds flying around that were there before and if you look close, you can see the netting from the old bird areas.

I miss Discovery Island, too. It was a nice spot to go for a little quiet but still so much to see. I loved the flamingos and the huge tortoise. That's funny that the bird netting is still up. I would think they'd worry about wild birds getting caught in it.
