While at the Contemporary, I struck up a conversation with one of the cast members there. I asked her if Disney had any plans for Discovery Island, and she said "funny you should ask....they are either going to turn it into a Pirates of the Caribbean-type adventureland for kids OR construct an exclusive honeymooners-only resort".

She didn't know when the final decisions were to be made.

I think they should turn it into a Pirates of the Carribean type Adventureland for kids AND adults. :)

Wow!!! I like this rumor. I hope by "honeymooners-only" she meant couples only like some island resorts are. Don't get me wrong I like kids but being able to go back to a resort that only had adults would be great. I nice balance between fun and romance.

The CM was hoping for a honeymoon resort as well. She said that, if they do the honeymoon resort, that will surely mean a first-class restaurant and lounge, which she was hoping to work at!

I, too, would love to see an adult-only resort at Disney. Not that I don't like kids, but sometimes romance is difficult when you can hear kids running and screaming in the room next to yours ;) .

Rumor, this a great area that I think Disney needs to use for something rather than let it dry rot and become a weedy eye sore.:wave2:

Now I would like that. I love my kids (and other people's), but I would definitely take visit that resort while my kids are at home...or even when they're grown & gone.

The pirates thing would be cool, too.pirate:

When I was at VWL in Sept. the cm on the boat said that Discovery Island could not be used anymore because it's owned by the federal government and that it was strictly used for conservation

OR construct an exclusive honeymooners-only resort".
This has been discussed since 1997 it will not come to pass.

because it's owned by the federal government
I, Uh, what. . . . . . wrong!

I, too, would love to see an adult-only resort at Disney.
WDW is not going to deviate from its' core business.....family oriented entertainment

Am I the only one that read the thread title and thought we were talking about Discovery Island at DAK?

I miss Discovery Island the way it used to be. I don't care what they do with it, just so long as they do! It's been on the drawing board WAAAY too long and they need to get a plan in action. BTW, what's DAK? It doesn't even show up in the list of abbreviations.

LoL, Eric...I knew what was meant, but DAK did cross my mind, hehe.

ncbyrne, DAK is Disney's Animal Kingdom; Discovery Island there is the former Safari Village. The name's been changed to commemorate the 'real' Discovery Island :)

I'm in the minority but I love DI the way it is - a bird sanctuary. We love WL because the views are so natural in comparison to other resorts. I would hate to look out and see construction on DI and then an attraction or honeymoon nook. My favorite time is watching the birds fly home to roost at sunset on the island.

I thought nothing could be done with the island, because of the birds. If endangered species frequent the island, law would not allow development?

Well, I can do you one better....I had in mind Pleasure Island  Doofus!

Anyway, the Pirates adventure islands sounds kinda cool. But only if they keep the everything low key. You know, so that it doesn't spoil the natural look of the island when you view from CR WL or FW.

Can you imagine a place there for a boys themed character meal there???

I love rumours!

Well, that's a more appropriate site for a Honeymoon Hotel! ;) ;)

I've also heard this rumor for years; the responses are usually:

- Issues with the birds / wildlife / endangered species

- Access issues (where would the 'guests' park cars, which dock, how to get luggage, food, necessities over there)

- Serious infrastructure issues: water, sewage, etc.

That said, I'd still love to see it happen!

I think the Federal Gov. thing might have been a mis-understanding. There are conservation guide lines for lake front properties on how many acres can be developed near lakes. I think it is around 35% developed land limit.

For example Our church is within 1/2 mile to a lake and we can not build a new building and parking on our 7 acres because of this rule.

THis could be what they were talking about.

I was told the same thing years ago from someone else. I believe it is a long running rumor.
