Discovering A Whole New World of Disney-An October 2013 Photo Safari **Updated 2/20

There is nothing like Tower of Terror. I've had non-Disney friends say the same thing, and I'm like "no. Not even close".

We're actually the opposite of you. We rarely get FPs for ToT, instead we normally end up waiting in line. I love the queue.

Hahahaha, that chambermaid sounds awesome!

My least favourite ride in all of Disney World? Tower of Terror. Yep, it's true. But admittedly the queue is definitely one of the best ever. Since the last time I rode ToT I was too scared to look at anything, I always love looking at people's pictures In there, and yours are by far the best I've ever seen! Love, love, love the attention to detail.

The panic bellman and the flirty chambermaid are a hoot! The photos are great in black and white. Fits right in with the ToT theme. Great job on getting the ghosts, those are great photos! I’m not sure I even remembered them being there, I’m usually too focused on when the bottom is going to drop out! My oldest daughter are like yours, not a huge fan of the ride. She did it once and that seems to be enough for her. Now, her little sister is tall enough now and she’s more of a thrill ride junkie so she may have to potential to be a multiple rider.

I do think that ToT would be like Haunted Mansion and be a blast to be a CM at. Where else can you be a little freaky and scare people and get paid to do it? Plus, I think they have some of the better costumes out there.

Wow. Just Wow! Those are the BEST pictures of ToT I have ever seen. How the heck did you get all those cob webs to show up like that? Amazing.

And the holographics? So cool. I have to admit that ToT always makes me a little nervous. I want to take my camera on the ride, but I always chicken out.

Thank you so much! I'm just so excited that I got to share them with my fellow Disney and ToT fans! :thumbsup2

I did "practice" during previous trips to determine if I could have my camera out on the rides by seeing how comfortable I was using one hand or no hands to hold on during the rides. For most rides, I figured I would be okay. RnR not so much so I kept the camera tucked in for that one. :lmao:

I'm so glad I got to go through the regular queue this time. Totally worth it!

Yeah, the chambermaid was definitely memorable. :lmao:

I think there's so much details and items that I still missed during this trip that I can't wait to go back in January and snap away again while in the queue and especially in the library!

I totally agree with you - the HM and ToT CMs have a very fun job! :goodvibes

Last year when I was walking into ToT I saw a couple of newbie CMs who were assigned to ToT getting their orientation by a more experienced CM. It was a pretty cool sight. I wish I could have eavesdropped more but I did hear the mentor explaining the history and events of the hotel and how to reconcile that with the current reality when interacting with guests. Of course I also took a picture of them as well. In the picture I also thought it was very interesting how all of the guests are completely oblivious to their presence and laser-focused on entering the queue. ;)

Ahh love these!! ToT is a favorite, along with the Twilight Zone... You definitely capture the spooky/creepy factor!! I wonder if they actually clean the cue....

Hmmmm. That's an excellent question. I'm beginning to suspect that those chambermaids aren't actually doing any cleaning of the hotel. :rotfl:

ToT has got to be the BEST themed queue in all of WDW, and you did an amazing job of capturing it! Really stunning photos of the lobby. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 It's amazing how much detail they put in there! It's really great that you had the opportunity to slow down a bit and enjoy all of that atmosphere thanks to your event. And it doesn't hurt getting to ride 4 times in a row either!!

Wow, so many great details captured on BTMRR Dave. Honestly I tend to miss most as I get pretty bored on there except at night.

OK, now that I know it's a haunted train ride, I think I like it again!!!

I absolutely ADORE Move It Shake It. It's infectious and whenever I'm near it you will absolutely see me dancing and singing along. Being in that parade has to be the best job anywhere. I think I may be a bit obsessed.

ToT is the best themed ride of all time... anywhere. Spectacular photos as always Dave.

I need to get that job! Stand around an look busy... I can do that!

:rotfl: Me too!! That or win the Mega Millions Jackpot tonight. ;)

Rob, Welcome back!! From Brenda's Facebook newsfeed it sounded like you had an awesome time. Can't wait to hear all about it!

Back in October of 2012 I was attending a conference in San Diego and decided to take a short two night trip up to Anaheim to visit DLR before the conference officially began. I’ve been totally lucking out with these conference locations. right? ;) I went into the trip with fully intent on trying out the Little Mermaid attraction at DCA as this was right around the time New Fantasyland was opening over in Florida. I walked up to the entrance of the attraction then got extremely cold feet as I watched families and couples walk in but really couldn’t spot another single solo guest in line. My self-consciousness got the best of me as I talked myself out of going on the attraction with images of a middle aged guy sitting in a clam shell alone with his gigantic spy grade camera swirling in my head.

I know, my warped irrational fear was so unnecessarily silly and pointless. Who cares, right? But I think some of my fellow solo travelers on the DIS will agree that there are certain activities that become a mental hurdle when trying to do solo. For some folks, it’s eating alone at a sit down restaurant. For others, it’s watching a movie by oneself in the theater. For me, it was riding alone on a princess ride. Well, the best way to overcome these hurdles as I learned is to just do it and find enjoyment that are unique to the solo experience. That’s how I got over my reluctance of eating alone and started to enjoy the experience as a foodie conversing with the servers and focusing all my attention on how the food tastes. And these days I sometimes prefer watching a movie by myself especially if it’s a movie that I know DW won’t enjoy as much.

So one night at MK after a great DIS meet dinner at BOG (hint hint, teaser for a future post! ;)), I took a big gulp and entered the queue for Ariel’s journey or whatever it is called these days. In order to make sure I didn’t back out at the last minute, I booked a precious FP+ for it! As I walked through the relatively short queue, I tried to just focus on my camera settings to minimize being so self-conscious. Here’s a little insight into the inner voices in my head as I stayed in line.

"Wow, am I the only guy by himself standing in line? Nope, not going to do that, nothing wrong with enjoying the classic story of The Little Mermaid….with some “minor” changes to the ending.

Ummm, why is it that it looks like I’m at least 20 years older than the 30 people in front of me and the 30 people behind me? Seriously, I need to stop looking around. It’s not helping. Disney is for all ages and is for…..oh crap, I’m being assigned to a pink clamshell."

I somehow managed to step into the clamshell, settle in, and get my camera up and ready to help calm my irrational jitters and then all was good. The CM said “Enjoy! And remember, no flash photography!” and singled me out because he didn’t say that to the group in front of me. Hmmmph. Seriously, when your camera gets to a certain size you really don’t have to remind that person to keep the flash off. Not only is my flash always off but so is my LCD screen on the back when I go on the dark rides. I know how annoying those screens can be as I sat behind my share of ipads being used for pictures and videos on Pirates. Perhaps the CM should have given that reminder to the lady sitting in the shell in front of me because she took pictures with her smartphone the entire ride with the flash ON!! My eyes! Oh my eyes! :headache: Sorry, got off on a rant there – I’ll save my soapbox rant about flashes on dark rides for another time but let me just say she did ruin a good half of my pictures by shooting of her flash the same time I was taking the pictures.

Ok, back to happy thoughts. I really do love this ride. I think it’s time for me to start yapping and starting rolling out the pictures. So here we go!

Wonder if what she’s holding gets categorized as a whosit or a whatsit.

I was intent on getting this picture right this time. The spotlight on Sebastian is about 100 times brighter than anything else in that room so in the past my camera would lock on to an exposure setting that overexposed his face. So as soon as I saw him approaching I started adjusting my exposure settings and metering the light on his face. Yay!

I can just hear the singing looking at these pictures.

Hmmmm. Something tells me we’re entering a not so friendly zone. Can’t really put my finger on it.

Oh yeah. That’s it.

Back to more happy thoughts. Seriously, if they didn’t take so long to get this kiss on the way we could have avoided the whole mess of the last 20 minutes of the movie!!

I hadn’t noticed it before but Sebastian is peeking out from the grass and to the side of the scene. Only makes sense since he is actually singing the song.

When I got off the ride, surprise, I was totally fine. Didn't turn into a pumpkin! I'm so ready now to go on the Teacup Ride solo!!:goodvibes

I may not have ever traveled solo, but I kinda get the same feeling about doing things for little kids because we have none. I understand. But I also will admit to laughing out loud at this:

Disney is for all ages and is for…..oh crap, I’m being assigned to a pink clamshell."

In fact I'm still giggling at it.

So glad you overcame your self consciousness though because wow! Your pictures in there are amazing! Mine are so much less sharp and more grainy. Also never having been on the ride before and not knowing any better, I totally blew out Sebastian's face. :rotfl:

Totally 100% agree with your rant about CMs reminding me with my big SLR no flash, but not the guy in front of me with his point and shoot set to auto! The difference here my dear CM is that my camera doesn't need the extra light as much, and I actually know enough about how it works to turn it off. :headache: Ok, end rant within a rant. :rotfl:

I especially love your Kiss The Girl scene. :thumbsup2

Love your first Ariel shot - I found some of the lighting cast difficult shadows on her face.... Made for not so flattering pictures! Also, way to go on Sebastion!! While I can understand the hesitation - I'd be more freaked out by a stranger with your camera gear at my daughters gymnastics class - and not WDW! I bet people often thought you may have worked for Disney!

I have to admit Dave, I have yet to find a Disney activity I won't do solo. Well, other than Enchanted Tales, lol.

I remember riding Under the Sea for the very first time (and the very first day open to the public... just sayin') and EVERYBODY seemed to have their flash turned on. That's annoying enough, but the clamshells face one another at times so we got loads of flashes right in the eyes. Not pleasant.

And as a side note, the photos always look better with no flash anyway as your's totally demonstrate. Just beautiful.

Um, yeah you are absolutely lucking out with your conference locations!

I agree, I think there are some things that you mentally have to get past when you're traveling solo. You mean you wouldn't want to ride alone on a princess ride every day? :lmao:

Great Ursula picture! I love her on that ride. I have to get a shot every time. Although mine is with my iPhone, not a fancy dancy camera.

Glad you didn't turn into a pumpkin.

I am glad you got over your solo fear and you were able to enjoy LM. Did you wear dark glasses and a hat while you were getting on the ride. :rotfl2:

I have done one solo trip from start to finish, but I have also traveled solo to meet other people at Disney/ Not quite the same. On my solo trip the only thing I really didn't want to do was eat at a TS by myself. When I am alone I just want to eat fast and get it over with.

Thanks! Sarah and I talked about Sebastian's overexposure problem on FB so I was more prepared this time. As soon as I saw him approaching I frantically started dialing up the shutter speed. :rotfl:

Totally agree about the shadows on Ariel's face - makes taking her picture so difficult. It's sort of like the opposite of Sebastian's lighting issues.

Funny you mentioned people thinking I worked with Disney. That actually happened on a couple of occasions where people would come up to me to ask questions thinking that I was a CM. Both times they corrected themselves halfway through their question when they quickly realized either by my totally confused look or the lack of name tag that I was not a Disney employee. :rotfl:

Too funny about your solo activities because Enchanted Tales was the only princess attraction that didn't cause as much anxiety. I think it was because I could just blend into the crowd and it was less obvious that I was solo. :rotfl:

I completely agree with you about how photos from dark rides come out when a flash is used. That's actually my main beef about flash - it white washes out the beautiful colors and lighting. Everything is bathed in harsh light and you completely lose that ambiance that is unique to each of those rides. There's a reason why Disney decided to set up these rides in very dark settings. They just look better. :thumbsup2

My next conference is all the way in Vancouver so no Disney solo trip in May. :sad2: Trying to get to Vancouver is a big pain from DC. I believe I have 3 hour layovers each way, once in San Francisco and once at O'hare.

Ursula is also one of my favorite things on that ride. Wish she had one more appearance considering that the Imagineers decided to completely omit the whole climax battle in the sea scene. ;)

:rotfl: I figured a hat and sunglasses would draw even more attention to me so didn't do it. :lmao:

Here's one trick I've learned about eating solo at a sit down restaurant at Disney and other places. I always ask the hostess if I sitting at the bar is an option with the full menu being available. If it is, I take it because it feels so much more natural facing forward towards the bar and the bartender rather than staring at an empty chair. Also, if he/she is not busy the bartender is a good person to chat with during the meal. :thumbsup2

Hi Dave! Just popping to sub before I go back to catch up! Your pics are beautiful!
