I am one of the few visiting WDW next week without the dining plan. However during the month of December Discover told me that if I charge my meals with the card I would not be entitled to the 5% cash back because Disney does not label the bill as a restaurant? Can anyone verify this? It doesn't make much sense to me. I mean a restaurant is a restaurant. What difference does it make where it is physically located?:confused3

that's not true - we used our Discover card at CA Grill and Bluezoo while at WDW in October and we got our 5% cash back; I even verified it on my statement.

Well I hate to contradict oyblosoi, our resident Disboards dining expert ;), but this Discover issue relating to Disney not labeling the charges as restaurant bills is true. We have noticed it on previous years' trips and it seems to be the case again this year.

We were only there for a short 3 night trip and used our Discover almost everywhere. The only dining bills that showed up in the restaurant catagory on our statement were La Cava de Tequila (billed as San Angel Inn) and Burger King at MCO. Now, listed under travel/entertainment were Cosmic Ray's, CHH, Prime Time Cafe, Fountain View Restaurant, the Contempo Cafe and a $270 birthday dinner at Le Cellier. None of these were counted as going towards the 5% cashback bonus.

As I said this had happened during a previous trip when this was offered and at that time I did call and say, what's up? The explanation was pretty much the same (we can't do anything about it unless Disney changes its billing practices). So we weren't really suprised this year.

contradict away, I'm not an expert in anything ... except maybe not being an expert.

That's just really weird because I did go back and check our October statement just to be sure and both CA Grill and Bluezoo are listed as restaurants and we did get the applicable credit (because we maxed it out between those two).

I wonder if the problem stems from restaurants located inside the theme parks versus those in resorts? :confused3 Wait ... you listed some resort restaurants as well in your list, so now I'm just stump-diddley-umped.

Sorry to hear about the confusion - that stinks.

I have checked some old Discover statements and found that, for example, Chefs du France was listed as Restaurant while Pirate y Perica was listed as Travel. I would think the ones owned and operated by Disney don't come through as restaurants, but the independent (leased), especially in World Showcase, do.

They usually show up as restaurants, but remember the 5% back was for 3 months, on a cap of like $400. That's a big $20 for those months. I loved it when they didn't cap it.

California Grill is a Disney-operated restaurant, so it's not that.

Rats! 5% back on travel is coming up again Jan - March, but I looked back at my Discover statement from our trip in May/June of 2008 and everything I charged at the hotels (room, DDP basically) was charged in the 'Services' category. Oh well. No 5% back for me!

The 5% cash back also includes grocery stores. Won't help anyone at Disney but there is still enough time to charge up to $400 in groceries. I usually don't put my groceries on a credit card but did for several weeks to get the bonus.

We will do the same. I sign up for that 5% cash back bonus every quarter and I always make sure we hit the $400 limit to get the most benefit. Some months are easier than others, though.

The first three months of the year include airfare purchase so I try to take advantage of that one too. :thumbsup2
