Does anyone have any advice on how to get a good deal on a car rental for a California trip? We will be flying in/out of LAX and spending 5 days at DL followed by 15 more days driving out to Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, San Francisco and back to LA. Our drives will consist of some long hauls over mountains as well as through the desert (Death Valley) so we were thinking we would want an SUV (larger size) to give us the horsepower as well as possibly extra coolant system. We are a family of five plus all our luggage so at a minimum we would have needed a mini-van anyway.

My question is, how do I get a good deal on the big SUVs? When I price them out online, they seem outrageously expensive ($2500 for 21 days).

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Budget looks like your best option this far in adavnce. Using BCD x474200 (travelocity code) and E-Coupon MUGZ029 for $30 off I get $896.43 inc taxes for a full size SUV. This total reflects the coupon discount when you return the vehicle. I just plugged in Jul 7 - 28th. I checked an off airport location and I see total is $783.47 inc taxes and coupon.

If you figure it out let me know!! I have had a tough time finding a mini van rental from LAX (return to LAX). We actually ended up getting a flight from LAX to LAS for $35PP as it was cheaper to do that and get a 2nd rental in LAS then to pick up at LAX and leave the car at LAS.

I'm not 100% sure if this applies out in Cali but i found that there is a good deal at AVIS for a large SUV rental. $159/week if you use the 'AWD' Code S767700. BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR HUNTING!

Just a quick update. After looking into this code it has a 14 day maximum rental term. Not sure you you can work around it or not, but its still a great deal for anyone looking to rent an SUV.

Priceline is always my go to when it comes to car rentals. Try them first as you control how much you want to pay and for what category of car.

Make sure to check Hotwire dot com.
For our west coast trip last year, June 15-30, I picked up a full-size car for 16 days for $366 U.S. all in.
Granted not a SUV or mini-van like you'll need but its a starting point.
That was picked up in Vegas and returned there too.
Also, we did the whole Death Valley, Yosemite, S.F., L.A., Las Vegas circle with a family of 4 and a full trunk of luggage and had no problems with the car in terms of overheating or having enough power so I wouldn't be concerned with that. Especially since rental cars/vans are always so new.

Hope this helps,
