I read another post that was linked at the top of the home page today which explained that Disney is giving out discount coupons to use at some of the counter service locations.

Why is this? To spread the crowds out (due to timing) during the day? Because the crowds are lower than expected?

Hmmm......wondering if we will see them *next* week.

I beleive we got one of these during xmas week last year which is the bussiest time. I think it is a way to push dining in certain restaurants at certain times( I think it was very early lunch or after 3pm?).

Yeah, it's a tactic to spread the business a little, cut out a little bit of the mad rush at peak hours (11-2 for lunch service).

Same reason you'll see coupons for 'Sun-Thurs only' or 'after 9pm only' or such things out here in the non-WDW world.

The restaurant staff is already there, the food is sitting in the cooler/freezer waiting to be cooked... let's see if we can get some folks in here to buy it (at a discount - gotta use bait to get 'em in) to offset some of our overhead/operating cost (wages for employees who are just waiting for a rush) as well as help us sell more overall for today by hopefully drawing in some folks who otherwise wouldn't come in at all.

People coming in during peak time, who see shorter lines than they otherwise might, are more likely to get in line and buy.

It's a win-win-win. And more likely in a rush time/peak crowd (since the restaurant will have to be at full manpower capacity to deal with the lunch rush if the crowds are larger) than in an off-peak time (when there are less staff and some windows/areas closed anyway).

I have read about have certain times when they can be used which indicates it's to spread out the dining. It does seem that everyone decides to eat lunch between 12:00 and 12:30.

Really, this isn't much different than the Fantasmic package or the Finding Nemo seating with lunch at Tusker House at certain times.

My first thought was that the restaurants aren't selling the food. You give a discount to move the food. Anyone in the biz knows you never offer discounts during your busiest time. You want to attract the customer that might not eat at your establishment, so you lure them with discounts. I've noticed multiple threads lately about eating lunch in the resort room.

Had another post that said this is only at DHS, which may have a need to move people toward their CS establishments. The TS are usually crowded there (except maybe Brown Derby, which is expensive)
