My nephew has a gray spot between his baby teeth in the bottom. She does not send him to bed with a bottle. She thinks its from iron supplement? Any wisdom? She's taking him to an expensive dentist this week, on Thursday, but we aren't sure how he will get a good look at a wiggly baby. Her pediatrician ( who I think is a moron, but she loves him) claims its not the iron because the discoloration would be brown.

The gray color is usually caused by one of two things: tooth trauma or liquid iron supplements. When my DD was 2 she took a nosedive off of our couch onto the hardwood and hit her mouth hard, the end result being a gray front tooth. :headache:

does it look like this? this is image of the start of bottle rot.

bottle rot isnt just sending children to bed with bottles. it can happen from not brushing too.

The two front teeth in pic have crowns on them already

My oldest DS fell against MIL's bed when he was 2-1/2 and ended up with two grey front teeth on the top. He doesn't have any discoloration on his permanent teeth.

My youngest of three grandsons ended up with a grey front tooth (baby tooth) from a fall. Their dentist did a pulpectomy - you can't tell which one it was now.

It doesn't look lie that at all. It's gray in the middle of the two front teeth. They are his only teeth. She can't think of any trauma. She's going to ask her husband and her. Mother in law if they can think of any. They grew in that way.

The other thing to look at would be hyperplasia. A lack of enamel on the teeth. My youngest suffered from this.

Have your nephew's parents look at the teeth closely. If the spots look frosty or jagged or soft in any way they are probably cavities and definitely need to be seen by a dentist to prevent him from having pain. But since the teeth are so new it's highly unlikely that they've gone and decayed in such a short amount of time.

Iron typically DOES stain the teeth a sort of grey color, so if the teeth look solid. it's probably a surface stain that can be polished off at the dental office. That would be my guess - I've seen it many times with the iron drops and it comes off easily. Nothing to get anxious about, but a dental exam may be worth the peace of mind for the parents. Have them ask for their child to have a "limited exam" (that's all a toddler needs IMO).
