take pictures with my phone anytime they want? what is up with that and why would the disboards want to automatically take a pic of anything through my cell phone? If they have no intention of doing that then why is it I had to agree to it to be able to download the app and use the boards?

All kinds of companies ask for all kinds of freedoms when they provide a free service to you. We pay for our cell phones but in order to use certain facets of the services offered, we are asked to give up our privacy.

Personally, I am not anxious to put my life on display. I don't have facebook - am I the only one left?

So, when I went to download the Dis App, I found that I was not willing to agree to all the conditions of having that particular App, so I don't have it. Operation aborted!

I also turn location service on and off on my phone. (I can't use Maps without gps!)

I hate that when I visit Zappos to buy a purse, for months afterwards the ads for that company are flashing at me on the bottom of my Dis pages. (Well, actually now it is Petco as I had to get a new dog crate - hey I drove down to Petco and got my crate - don't need to see the ads anymore!)

But, I want to read the Disboards and at this moment, I just ignore the ads.

Right now, all the technology comes with the price of your privacy. The current culture doesn't respect it. They just want to sell you something. They don't know what you will buy so they track your every movement to try to figure out what will part you from your cash.

I still have a choice and I will choose as much as I possibly can for as long as I can.

I also believe we are giving up too much of our privacy just for technology and I am not willing to do that. No FB for me or my dh. So, you are not the only one left :goodvibes

We are FB free here to for this privacy reason and also dont use location services unless we really need to actively use them! You are not alone!

Hmm, probably naive of me, but I would have assumed that was because you can upload photos via the app.
Do you literally mean that the Dis can take photos from your phone without notifying you?

If you are using Chrome, you can use AdBlock.

If Internet Explorer, go to Tools - Tracking Protection --- click link on bottom of window that opens and click Get Tracking Protection. This will load a panel where you can choose what lists to get.

I have Easy List, Easy Privacy, Privacy Choice, and Truste.

You have the option to turn it back on by clicking an icon in your browser next the the address url (so if there are sites you want to be tracked or see ads, you still can). Mine is a blue circle with a line through it when on, grey when off.

You're right Sundancer. Whenever an app can have photos uploaded to it, it asks for access to your camera roll so you can successfully post photos. :)

No one is "going into your phone" or remotely taking pictures. Pretty sure Disboards doesn't have the technology to do that nor do they care about people pictures on their phones.

Thank you, I thought that was a bit far fetched ;)

Maybe not...but then, we are giving permission for them to do that by using the ap. Just because they probably do not have the technology today doesn't mean they won't tomorrow. And what if it's a few years from now and everyone has forgotten that they gave permission. Ugh - think about your phone sitting on your nightstand when you get dressed in the morning. No thanks. I am VERY glad this thread was started - I have a habit of not reading permissions from companies I trust (like Disboards). Guess it shows I have too trusting of a spirit. I will be removing the app, personally.

Seriously, you think the dis has the technology to remotely switch on my phone, take a photo and store it for their own uses?
Taking a photo off of my camera roll without my knowledge I might believe, but not that.

Simply decline access to your photo roll. You can still use the app, you just won't be able to upload photos. As for location services, same thing, just decline it. No need to turn your location services on and off just go to your settings and switch them on or off for each app. You have control over each one. Most apps do not require you to agree to all things they're just trying to make the app do what it does, it needs access to certain things to do that.

^^ good info.

I sense there's gonna be some reaching in this thread so I'll bow out. Haha.
