Disappointment at Breakfast: Boardwalk Bakery

I noted this in my TR, but thought I'd expand a bit on my experience at the Boardwalk Bakery.

In 2011, my family took a morning excursion to the Boardwalk and popped into the Bakery for breakfast. We loved it. I had the ham, egg, and cheese croissant, and it was so good it immediately became a "Must Do" for us on our next visit. That visit came last week.

In our schedule, we had reserved two days for in-park breakfasts, and Boardwalk was slated for our next-to-last day in the parks. I had read here about the Boardwalk's renovation from its previously cramped confines, and looked forward to its expanded storefront. What I was not prepared for were the changes to its breakfast menu.

No more prepared breakfast croissants.

Perhaps I just didn't do my due diligence on this aspect of the Boardwalk Bakery's refit, or it just flew under the radar, but I was thoroughly disheartened when I saw the Bakery's menu and saw no croissant breakfasts at all. I asked who I believe was a/the manager, and she explained that the refit took out their kitchen, and they no longer were able to make custom-prepared sandwiches. The only breakfast they now offer is either a biscuit sandwich, or a ham and egg bread bowl. The manager went on to say the only thing they could offer were the "frozen biscuits and bread bowls" they just put an egg and/or the canned/pre-made gravy. I was so frustrated and disappointed I nearly didn't get anything, but I settled for the bread bowl.

It was awful.

Thick, heavy, doughy bread - even stiffer than I'd expect for a soup bread bowl at a place like Panera. The bread didn't even have a good flavor, and the diced potatoes weren't even remotely crisp, but chewy - sadly, like the egg. I thought I was just being too critical in lamenting the loss of my highly expected croissant, until my DS and DM made the same complaints - my mom's biscuit sandwich was hard/chewy, and the egg had a custard-like quality to it. She even mentioned she wasn't sure that egg wasn't actually frozen too. Capping it off was my 17-year-old DS, who eats like a vacuum cleaner, who wouldn't even finish his bread bowl. For him not to finish whatever he's eating borders on the unheard of. "They give you this tiny amount of egg on a huge chunk of bread. Its gross."

About the only redeeming feature of the breakfast was a simple muffin my DD bought, which was good, but hardly what I was expecting.

I know that other places offer a similar if not identical croissant sandwich breakfast, but I had no reason to believe they were no longer offering it at Boardwalk. Unfortunately, with other breakfast plans in place the next (and last) morning at WDW, I never had the chance to go to a place like Tommorrowland Terrace to see if their croissant breakfast offering was like the one I was missing from BB.

Seems to me that if you're just going to offer some nasty frozen/thawed bread/biscuits as a throwaway to say you have a breakfast option, it might be better just to discontinue the notion altogether. This bread bowl/biscuit business isn't anywhere near Disney standards, and put BB off our list for any special future visit.

Very disappointing.

I'm sorry they changed that on you. How terrible. I would be crushed if they took away the carrot cookie etc. You will just need to find a new bfast spot. I hear good things of Starring rolls?:confused3

We haven't been in the BW Bakery in like ten years since they took away the real sticky buns, cinnamon yummies etc. and outsourced the place - such a shame as we used to go every morning (and they had great breakfast burritos).

:thumbsup2

same with Main street bakery but now as least has decent coffee compared to Nescafe

We enjoyed the croissant breakfast sandwiches from Boardwalk Bakery on our previous stays also, sad to hear they are gone.

I need to look over the new menu I guess before our stay in November.

Dang it. How disappointing, was looking forward to getting my ham egg and cheese croissant. Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry you were disappointed but in all honesty, if you went ahead and ordered the bread bowl muffin thingees after the manager told you they were frozen, you were kinda sorta warned. Just saying.

Even before the renovations the bakery was never great value if you were on the meal plan and wanted 'food' instead of snacks for breakfast. Now it sounds like there is no real choice at all. I would love to see an upgrade.

Last stay we were at BLT and having access to the food court at the CR was nice. That kind of variety is lacking at the BW.

Good news is the Beach Club is a nice walk and the Marketplace has a lot of choices, and the reviews on the Bakery seem to be good for lunch.

Don't they have a ham and egg croissant at the French Bakery in Epcot (Boulangerie Patisserie)? It is open for breakfast now, too.
