Oh where to begin.... so my husband and I just got back from a week at the World for our Honeymoon. It couldn't have been a more un-Disney week. So we arrived on our first day and picked up our "just married" pins and two Mickey groom ears, (Yay for gay marriage being legal in Massachusetts!), and started what should have been an exciting week. Well that excitement went away the minute we stepped through the gates. All week we were snubbed by CM's who saw our badges, then pretended not to see them, and would just look away. All the while we saw straight couples around us being congratulated left and right. I understand that gay marriage is a sensitive issue, but I feel that when you work for a company like Disney you have to set your personal preferences aside. The worst was when we were in line for Expedition Everest, two groups ahead of us was a straight couple with Mickey/Minnie wedding ears and the same pins we had. When they approached the CM at the entry point they had a short interaction about their wedding, etc, then the CM gave them fastpasses as their "wedding present". Not two minutes later when we approached the same CM, she looked at both of our pins and gave a disapproving look as she looked away. I was mortified! This happened all week!!! We saw other couples being given fastpasses at attractions with long lines, being congratulated all over the place, and magical cupcakes at counter service restaurants. I can count on two hands the number of times that we were congratulated. The funny thing though is that Jay would go into a store and I would be standing next to a female friend in our travelling group and the congrats would come flying like rapid fire, when Jay was standing by my side again..... nothing. The same would happen to Jay when I would go into a store also, it was crazy. I finally went to Guest Services at the MK to complain about it, the CM didn't seem to know what to say and actually came across as non-chalant about the whole thing, her response was to give us two fastpasses for our entire group. But even then she didn't congratulate us either!!! I couldn't believe it!!!
At least we had our big end of the week celebration dinner at O'hana to look forward to with both of our families. Boy was I wrong. When I initially made the reservation I told them we were going to be down there for our honeymoon and they noted it on the confirmation so that something special could be planned for us. I called two weeks before we arrived just to make sure the reservation was all set and then again told them about the special celebration, they again told me that it was noted and there would be magic to be had that night. The Wednesday before dinner my brother called and left a voicemail for the management staff and never got a call back. He called again Friday afternoon and actually got in touch with someone at the restuarant. He also explained what the dinner was for and also asked if they could help make the night special for the two of us and the group. He was told they would make the night very special and filled with magic. Their idea of a very special night filled with magic? The two of us got called up to hold the limbo stick for the limbo contest, then our table got leis, and then we got cupcakes at the end of the meal. The entertainment, Lapoa I think was her name, didn't even get our names right when she made the announcement to the room. Adding insult to injury? She told everyone that we were there to celebrate a "special occasion"... special occasion? We had groom ears on and were wearing "Just Married" pins, it was obvious what we were there for. But anyway..... I'm not sure that I should have expected anything more. That isn't to say that the week wasn't without its highlights, we went to Cape May Cafe for brunch once morning the Goofy was very excited to see our pins and even wrote "Congrats, Love Goofy" on the butcher paper table cloth. Also the first night we were there my brother and his girlfriend made a reservation and paid for a dinner at Citricos for the two of us. They gave us personalized menus that said "Congratulations Jay & Stephen" on the top. Then when dessert came there was a picture of the castle airbrushed on fondant and "Congratulations" written in chocolate. Now that night had more magic and surprises then the O'hana dinner that we had been planning for six months! I just left feeling so jaded, saddened, and disheartened. I felt like a place that I love so much and have so many memories from really let me down for the whole week. I did send an email to Guest Services, but I'm sure not will come of it, the usual corporate response is probably what I will get.
