Disappointed in Disney . . .

Hopefully I don't sound too much like a crazy cheap bridezilla, but I have some venting that must be done--and perhaps gain insight, or even share feelings on these issues.

The first thing I am upset about is the room blocks. I definately understand having the bride and groom to stay at a Disney Resort, and even the wedding party, but requiring a minimum number--say like 50, is a bit high--your already holding your wedding there!!

The second thing is the veiwing charge for Illuminations. I don't understand why this fee is in place: I think it is Disney's way of milking the newly weds. First, most if not all receptions/desert parties held in epcot must pay a rental fee for the area of use. So my question, or opinion, would be why would they charge us an additional fee per person, on top of that rental fee?? The rental fee alone for most of the locations are nearly double the viewing fees.

The third thing is the service charges. I definately understand the tips, and am more than happy to give out those, but the services charges are high (if they were 'normal' I wouldn't complain). Again, I would have no problem paying these without complaint, but something tells me the service charge (at least most of it) isn't going to the person actually providing the service. If it was, that would be nice, but I doubt it is.

The forth thing is the cinderella carriage. I know this is one thing I can't go without, and I'm not, but given the price your paying, you'd think they would pick you up where you want (within reason/distance), but they don't. They have a 'staged' pick up location (with the exception of GF/WP), which apparently only takes a couple minutes to get to Sea Breeze Point. Randy Chapman was actually the one who suggesting to me, to ask them to pick me up at my near by resort (BCV). I was told they would not--only the staged location, so I must find alternate transportation to that location first. This was more dishearting because I was looking forward to sharing that ride on the way to the ceremony with my dad and having our last few minutes before I was married.

And finally, the last thing (so far) that upsets me is their 'rules' about DJ's etc. if you are holding your event in a park. I was told I cannot have a DJ until after the park has closed and all guests have left. This will fall around 10-11pm by the time everyone has left, the DJ can begin. The problem here is that the event is scheduled to end at 11pm, but of course, Disney was happy to inform me that I canextend my hours later--for only the small charge of $450 per hour, plus additional food charges, and drink charges, plus the longer staffing charges--as well as having to pay the DJ extra. I certaininly understand the staffing and DJ, even the drinks, but as far as the food--everyone will have finished eating by then, and the other $450 per hour? Ridiculous!

Anyway, I apologize to anyone I may have upset or offended, but I just feel so taken advantage of. I understand they are still a business, but they are definatley playing the 'wedding' card. Moreover, we are suppose to be having a "Disney Fairytale Wedding", not jumping through hoops of fire--or money for that matter. I want a Disney wedding more than anything, but I guess it is what everyone says--it's the price your willing to pay.

It all boils down to supply and demand. Disney is doing over 3000 weddings a year so as long as people pay it they will serve it so to speak.

I LOVE Disney and if I had disposable income I would have done a big wedding there. Over all I felt like our intimate was a really good deal. Plus I didn't have to invite people I didn't care much about being there anyway!

Cinderella22 I absolutely agree, hence the reason we are having an Intimate wedding. We are not made of money and we are paying for everything ourselves!

I so so want a dessert party, but I am just not sure we can swing it, unless I know everyone will have a park pass...all of the "extra, extra" charges just add up to too much for us I think.

But, like Amber said, if people are willing to pay it, Disney will charge it!

GL!

The question I have to ask you is why are you getting married in Disney World?

I would wager to guess that one of the main reasons is for the magical elements that you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. But with these unique items, such as a horse drawn glass carriage or dessert party, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that they might come at a cost.

I invite you to try pricing out a private dessert reception with fireworks elsewhere, or trying to find a horse and carriage in another city to transport you to your wedding ? Part of the reason we are paying a premium is because of the convenience and the costs Disney incurs to provide those elements to us. It is not just hooking up a few horses to pull a carriage for the day. Those horses need to be fed and maintained throughout the year to make this service available to all of us. For the dessert party, you are paying the location fee, but I also don't see it as completely unreasonable for your guests to pay entry into the park considering the entertainment Disney is providing to them with Illuminations.

I do agree that because Disney does have exclusivity that they may charge slightly more, but I think this is the way it is for anything wedding related. Just look at how much you may have spent on your gown. I also like to consider the wedding planners provided by Disney and the amount of work and time we are saved not having to source out venues and limos and caterers. This is worth a lot in my opinion.

I personally think that Disney has done a great job making their weddings affordable and providing for a wide range of budgets. You could do the simple intimate wedding and it would be gorgeous because of the work Disney has put into creating packages with a wide range of options. Even the choice of wedding locations is amazing because of the money Disney puts into maintaining their properties. I know a lot of brides on here have said they chose Disney in the end because it is cheaper then having a wedding at home with the added bonus of it being at the Happiest Place on Earth. No one is forcing you to spend the extra money for the magical elements, but it is nice to know they are offered for those of us who want to splurge and make our day that much more special.

Personally, I am paying the $800 for the Magic Kingdom photo shoot which is somewhat of a stretch for us, but like you and the carriage, I have to have it. We could have gone with the basic photo package and it would have been beautiful, but I wanted that extra special Disney touch so I chose this element. It is pricey, but in the end I know it will be worth every penny. I chose Disney because it is so unique and if that means paying slightly more for some of the elements, then I am fine with that.

I don't know what it cost now but our wedding in 1999 cost about $13K. That included WP,cocktail hour at Whitehall room and patio, food(approx 40 people), flowers, linens, DJ, photog and video. I may have left out some things. It was arranged in about 45 min over the phone and everything went perfect. So in my opinion, whatever they charge is worth it. And that would be a pretty long ride to be picked up at BC.

i agree with both sides. it is difficult to swallow the costs of a disney wedding but for us it was far cheaper than anything we could have in the NY metro area and we got so much for our money.

I know its hard to see these costs ring up but like chantelle said - these things in others areas are quiet pricey. Disney charges the viewing fee because your guests are in their park with no park passes so they are trying to get money that way.

Sorry there are so many fees but speak to your planner and see if there are ways around these things. Don't forget you are getting married in disney and some ladies would love to have this opportunity.

i can totally hear you & understand where your coming from.

Its sad that unless you have the endless cash flow you can only have a tiny piece of the DFTW magic:confused:

Its hard too, cause they are pretty black & white about stuff...no real grey areas..so it is what it is no if's, and or buts!!

I am a little disappointed in the vow renewal package. I think its a little steap & they should be more flexible with options/substitutions....but they arent, so Im not gonna do it.

i think you arent the only bride with these concerns...i really wish DFTW would do surveys & really listen to past/present/future brides to see what really counts & matters & take that into consideration. I think that would please alot of people, but for now its a hard pill to swallow

i wish you luck & i hope everythign works out for you!!:thumbsup2

A great deal of this comes down to what is valuable to you. I was willing to pay for the MK & EPCOT photo shoots without even thinking about it. That's because the opportunity to have my bridal photos in the parks is all I have thought about since I first saw a DFTW. I dreamt of having M&M, riding in the coach, staying at the Grand Floridian. When I saw the prices I kept hoping my father secretly stashed $25,000 away for my wedding that he had never told me about!

When it came down to it I could not stomach paying $40 a minute for M&M to come to my wedding. Would I have loved to do so? Absolutely! I just couldn't justify it in my mind. Same thing goes for the coach and staying at the GF. I wasn't willing to start my marriage off by going into debt either. That's a stress that isn't worth any dream to me, even one I've had all my life.

It is frustrating to realize that it's not feasible to have everything you want. In the end, I am just happy to say we got married and at our favorite place in the world! I feel very privileged to have been able to do so!

I definately understand what you are saying, and I do agree with a lot of it. I am having a custom wedding, with nearly 80 people and it will still be cheaper than home. It's not the money that gets to me really--it's the principles behind it more or less. I would be MUCH happier having an additional cost of the wedding coordinator, or planner, floral designer etc. because that is a service that I would be lost without. I guess what it comes down to is accomadating our requests (within reason). Like someone said--it is more or less black and white and I think maybe there should be a bit more grey.

I want to get married here because it is truly magical--everyone is so happy and friendly. Perhaps that is what I am paying for, is all the happy people!! Which I guess is okay with me. In addtion, my DF and I had our first real vacation there together, I had my first 'real' vacation there when I was 13--my mom took me for my birthday. It's special: there are a lot of wonderful memories, and I guess no matter what I'll pay the little charges and fees.

When I intially wrote this thread I had just read an email from my WC with bad news, so I was pouting more or less. After reflecting and reading everyones responses I feel much better. When I read everyone elses journals or TR's, their experiences put a huge smile on my face. I guess what it comes down to, is I am marrying the person of my dreams, in the place of my dreams--so I need to stop whining and smile too!

dont feel bad about "pouting".....its a small case of sticker shock....completely normal

thats why we are all here...to help everyone!!!

No questions is dumb or bad....i would have been the same

Im glad you see your light at the end of the tunnel....you & DF

Good luck:goodvibes

Actually, after our wedding I did get several electronic surveys from Disney. One for my coordinator, one for the wedding overall (I think), and one for the resorts we stayed at. Unfortunately, the surveys were more like "what do you think on a scale of one to ten" and not like "tell us things you think we ought to know" which in my opinion would've been more helpful!

I have seen several other mentions about "why do they have to charge a viewing fee when they already getting a rental fee for the location?" ...I was told the charge is not wrapped into the location rental because there are other types of groups that use those locations throughout the day without viewing IllumiNations. So, it needs to be a separate charge. I think it us better than having to buy tickets for your guests and they ARE seeing a great show (my favorite "fireworks" show!).
