DS James has been waiting a long time for this day to come. He is halfway between 15 and 16 and was ready to head over to the license bureau today to get his learner's permit. Only there's a catch. According to Ohio, James won't be 15 1/2 until Saturday. It seems that even though James' birthday is November 15th, he isn't actually 15.5yo until May 17th. The rules state that you don't reach the halfway point until 183 days after your 15th birthday.

But James will be on a scout camping trip on Saturday. And he starts classroom driver's education on Monday which goes from the end of school until well after the License Bureau closes. And next Saturday he's going to Cedar Point for our Memorial Day DISmeet. So it looks as though he's going to have to wait until May 30th to get his temporary license.

That means he'll only have 12 days to practice before we leave for WDW. Although I am somewhat pleased that I have a two week reprieve from dealing with a teenage driver, I am concerned that he won't have enough driving time under his belt by June 12th when we start our 1000 mile journey to WDW.

I'm surprised at how well he is taking the news. He really is a great kid. :)

are you thining of letting him do some of the driving?

have you checked the driving laws in other states?

when I was a teen on Long Island, I could get a learner's permit/junior licnese at age 16 in the county where I lived, but was not legally permitted to drive in the next county until I turned 17.

Hang on tight to those car keys!! LOL

I think that my ds does much better on the freeway than on local streets.. at least on the freeway everybody is going the same direction.. well MOST of the time anyway;)!

Best wishes for a great trip to the world! and here's hoping your son does well with his permit exam!

TC - do they actually sit and count the days at the DMV?? Also - couldn't you break him out of school for an hour for an "appointment"??;)

My DD helped drive from Penna. to Kentucky last year - she had her permit for 6 months (got her license at 7 months.) She did a great job. Here in Pa. you have to wait until you're 16 to get your permit.

Songbird - I'm sure that TC will be letting his son drive for only limited periods of time and will factor in weather and traffic conditions, etc. A driver under the age of 18 here in Pa. is also limited to driving between the hours of 6 am - 11 pm.

I was wondering about this. I'll have to ask someone at the License Bureau before setting him loose to terrorize the people of West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida (in that order).

And yes, Pam, they do count days. :(

James asked if we could spring him from school to get his temps, but you have to go to the local BMV to get the test packet, then take it to an examination station, then bring it back to BMV to get the actual license. Due to distances involved, it would probably take the better part of an afternoon.

The BMV is open late on Monday, so perhaps James can get the packet and then take the written test sometime later in the week. It's all way too complicated for me to figure out. Thank goodness that DW Sue has a lot of time off from work after Mother's Day.

hey John.. you know how good of a driver I am so you think I could give him some lessons?? I saw how tight you had your seatbelt on..Its just that NYC cab mentality. Ill teach him right...:smooth: :smooth:

I *think* that local license laws apply in all states. So if you can drive where you live (and you don't have specific rules against driving elsewhere, like Briar Rose mentioned), you can drive everywhere. I know for a fact that local laws about vehicles apply everywhere. In some states, you don't have to have a license plate on all types of RVs and trailers, and you don't get in trouble for driving one of them in a state that requires plates on the same type of trailer. I would think that license laws would be the same.

Thank you so much!!!

I poked around the internet all afternoon looking for this info. You're the best!!!
