Yesterday I was looking in the mirror and noticed that with my new haircut, my gray hairs are a lot more noticeable. So I pulled one out, and then another one, and one more. Then I got one that was really weird... it was grey on the half towards the end, and dark brown (my natural color, I don't dye my hair) on the half closer to the roots! Is it possible for gray hairs to turn colored again on their own? I always thought they turned gray because the follicle stopped producing pigment. Has anyone else had gray hairs reverse themselves?

For the record, I am only 32 and have had gray hair in the front bang area since the age of 16.

It's never happened to me - but YOU GO GIRL!

I think that's great!:cool1:

I don't know the answer to your question but just wanted to say.....I'm getting carpal tunnel syndrome from pulling out grey hairs:sad2:

I think it's sputtering out.,,,you know, a little gray, then brown, and back and forth until it's completely gray. I found some of my hair that do that, too. I found one that was brown on the ends with a gray streak in the middle of the hair. It was weird.

well...I've heard of people being bald and it began to grow again after not being stressed anymore...but grey hair turning back :confused3 you've got me there...you figure that one out and you can go on as many wdw/cruise trips that you want!! :)

I need to figure out what's causing the gray reversal, and bottle it!

Me too!

I'm 40 & getting a lot of gray hair.

About 1/2 of them are as you described....my natural brown closest to my scalp & the older hair (the 1/2 at the end) is gray. I figure it's just losing its pigment there first.

(My hair is just past shoulder-length, btw).

I used to pluck the more visible gray hair for years. Now, I get my hair colored and highlighted more frequently. With six grandchildren, I don't want to waste time plucking!

My gray hair disappears every 3 weeks. :lmao:

When I lost all my straight dark blonde hair because of chemo I was afraid of what I would get.
It came back black on top, white on the sides and salt and pepper in back, and very curly. I loved the curl but hated the colors, I looked like a reverse skunk. So I dyed it.
I decided to let it grow to it's natural color and I got it cut short so it wouldn't look weird all different colors. It grew in stick straight and dirty blonde. A little darker than it used to be naturally, but almost no grey at all, maybe a few strands.
So yes, I have seen grey hair grow back to colored hair again, but I think the chemo had more to do with it than nature. Peggie

No, your hair strand's color is pretty normal. Pigment comes from one of the layers that makes up the hair strand called the cortex.

Awww, you just gave me a good memory!

My mom had gone 'back home' to help out her mother, who was going through chemo and having a hard time of it. I was in college at the time, and worried about my grandmother.

Mom called and said, "You're not gonna believe this!'
I gasped, "What?!"
She says, "Gramma's hair!"

Gramma was always concerned about her looks, always well groomed, wore make-up and had her nails done beautifully. She was worried about the chemo making her hair fall out, and the doctor assured her it wasn't a high enough dosage to make her lose her hair. I guessed he was wrong, and felt so bad for her.

"No, no," Mom said impatiently, "It's brown!"

I paused. What the heck did she mean? Was she losing her mind from the stress? "Mom...It's always been brown."
She gave an exasperated sound and said, "Well, it hasn't been brown naturally since I can remember. NOW it's growing in brown!"

What a lovely side effect after putting up with all the other ones! :rotfl:

Mine is getting grayer as I get older, and I sometimes have strands that are my natural medium brown color on one part of the strand and then gray on the other part of the strand.

It used to be that I'd be getting gray and when I got a haircut I'd be back to more brown, because all the gray got cut off. Now, when I get a haircut, the gray's still gray!!!!!!!!

I haven't colored my hair in years. I decided that since I am earning my gray hairs, I am going to wear the proudly!!!!

I was blonde as a child and then started highlighting it decades ago in my 20s.

I let it grow out last summer. I was sick for several months, and then when I finally went to the hairdresser I said "Just cut if off short." Off came the last of the highlighting.

It is very dark brown! I am 60 years old and everyone thinks that I have dyed it brown. I have about a 100 grey hairs which I point out trying to prove that it is natural.

I was blonde as a child, too. By about 5th grade it was 'dirty blonde', with red, brown and gold in it, but by high school it was most definitely light brown.

I also started plucking the gray hairs in my 20s, then realized the gray ones were growing back and stuck straight up out of my head! Not a pretty look, so I stopped.

I started highlighting with red and blonde several years ago, and am wondering what to do next. The gray hair is much more noticeable now than ever before, so I think I need to decide whether to color all over (then get highlights), or just let it go gray (which I hate!) I have two young boys, and don't want to be mistaken for their grandmother. Again. :rotfl:

I just turned 27 this month, just before my birthday I noticed this thick white hair poking out towards the front of my head (about 1"). I thought it was a dog hair at first, but it was Connected!!! I was soo bummed! So the other nite I decided to go on a hunt for Grays. I ended up finding 2 more and stopped looking.:scared: I am scared to pluck the hairs! I wanted to share my story, knew you guys would understand  I don't see mine changing back to brown.. since they are much thicker and course:eek: jen
