I posted this on the cruise board but thought I would post is over here too.

My family is booked in a cat 11 room for our cruise Sept. 29. My problem is that I started having some trouble walking and I don't know if I will need a wheelchair when we are cruising. I'd hate to take the disabled room away from someone who really needed it, but I also don't want to be so altruistic that we end up having to cancel because I needed a wheelchair room and they were all gone. Any ideas? Thanks!

IMHO, I think you should keep the accessible room unless you know for sure that you will not be needing a wheelchair. I've never been on a cruise, but I have read enough cruise trip reports and posts on the cruise board to realize that if someone with a disability doesn't need that room, they rent it out to a non-disabled person.
Even if you don't have a wheelchair, anyone who sometimes has need of a wheelchair would benefit from the other things, like grab bars that are in that room.

Thanks for the advice SueM and Wheelsie. I just didn't want to take it away from someone else. You are right though because the neuropathy has caused me a loss of balance and I always use the handi restrooms now if they are available because of the grab bars. Good point - I hadn't thought of it. My husband will be glad because he has been encouraging me to get the disabled room.

:) :D

Your travel agent may have already gotten you the appropriate medical release forms... You might want to fax your question to the Disney Cruise Vacations Medical Special Services Coordinator, Fax# 407-566-7739. I do know that ther person in charge of medical special needs at DCL arranges all the land-sea accomodations for you. Be sure to specify grab bars... think about whether you really need a room with a roll-in shower and such. If you can walk around your resort room, want a tub, etc., then let them know that in advance and they will try to book the right kind of room for you.
