I might argue that Nintendo has the biggest animated hit of the year. Universal was smart to license the property, but I have my doubts that a different Illumination movie would have done quite as well. It's also not something Disney would do as they prefer to work with their own properties.
Ok, how about animated movies in 2022?

So two years in a row of Universal having the top animated film. A category that was traditionally completely owned by Disney in years gone by.

While true, Universal has a lot of problems with their animation outside of Illumination or more specifically Despicable Me/Minions. It remains to be seen how many more, if any, Nintendo properties will be produced by Universal. Mario was a great success for them but they did have to split profits with Nintendo.

Universal is looking to win next year for highest animation gross as well with Despicable Me 4 but eventually they will need something else to milk.

And?

I don't get your point. It's as if you can't fathom the fact that Disney has hit a rough patch. They have before - remember the '80's? They have not alwyas "owned" the space. Competition is good. Illumination is doing pretty well right now, but clearly the Mario lisence gave the movie quite a boost since it has out-performed their highest grossing film by nearly 30%.

You state these facts as if I'm arguing with you about them. :confused3

Yeah - Ruby Gillman from DreamWorks just had a very lousy opening weekend, well worse than Elemental.

I am simply saying I want them to get their crap together and turn this mess around. Quit messing around and making content that is controversial and not appealing to the masses. Make good wholesome feel good content that is what the fandom wants.

Mario and Minions just proved it can be done in the last two years.

I have high hopes that Wish can be a return to form for Disney later this year.

Well, we all do, but your assessment that, to borrow video game vernacular, "TEH COMPANY IS DOOOOOOOMED!" is a bit over the top. They are making "good wholesome feel good content" too - ALL of their recent animated films would fall into that category. What's going on with theatrical has nothing to do with that.

Lightyear? Strange World? Elemental?

You're comparing apples and oranges though.

Elemental will become the highest grossing original animated film since Coco in 2017. Of course Mario and Minions would do well, they are based off existing IP unlike everything Pixar and Disney has released in the last 3 years.

This is not a Disney specific problem, its a market problem. We will see with inside out 2, frozen 3 and other sequels if it's a Disney problem. But it's not like their quality is bad, sans Strange World.

Streaming will be ad-based in the future. They've got no choice. Anyone ever count the ads in 10 minute youtube video?
Depends on the youtuber. Some I can have every 3 minutes and some there are none. Usually the top youtubers have sponsorships and will have limited to no ads in the video. Usually there is an ad at the start.

Not if you pay for the ad-free version, which a good portion will do. It's one thing for a YouTube video. It's another during a full-length feature film.

Does that really matter if Elemental will lose $100+ million dollars?

Based on the legs Elemental has, it will likely be less than $100M but that's only theatrical. It will make money via digital and physical sales and streaming revenue. It's very possible, if not likely that it will be profitable, minimally, for Disney.

However to your point of it losing theatrically, it does matter. It is on Disney for not spending $150M-$200M on every original animation. Ruby Gilman just tanked and will likely lose more than Elemental. Disney is already course correcting by announcing sequels Inside Out 2, Frozen 3, Toy Story 5. It was a bad time for Disney/Pixar to release so many original animated films.

I'm not sure what you want. Do you want Disney to only produce sequels?

They all had sociopolitical crap added that at least turned away a portion of the fan base. Why do that at all? Why not make things like they did in the 90s that almost no one found offensive in any way.

Are you aware of any group ever finding anything offensive about the animated Lion King?

Elemental had nothing in it that would be described as sociopolitical to the point of turning people away. No one turned away from Top Gun, Avatar, Spider Verse and they have way more political under tones.

I just want them to be good again, simple as that. Go back to treating the story as the most important thing, and quit all of the other stupid junk that doesn't matter. The story must come first always, that's how great movies are made.

The story in Elemental does come first.
