Yeah, exactly. That's one of the reasons that we started our house search without a realtor. We knew what we could afford and dealt with that instead of someone taking us around to get our expectations up.

Our system seems different to yours.

Most real estate agents will list the house for sale online or in the paper.
They do list the expected price range for that house....which everyone ignores and adds an additional 20% to the top end to decide if the property is within budget or not.
We used to get up on Saturday morning to get the paper and scour it for open for inspections.
We would then work out a plan for which properties to go see over the weekend.

Most houses sell under Open Auction system here.
