DIS Ladies Only Trip 2007 WISH!

I did okay.

Breakfast was cereal with blueberries (frozen in honor of FC).

Lunch was a Lean Cuisine Panini with a granola bar for dessert.

Snack was a yogurt.

Dinner was a Lean Cuisine rice/vege bowl.

Now the hardest part of the day will be resisting the urge to do late night snacking!!

I am trying to not eat after 7 p.m. which will be a real challenge since I am usually up until midnight or later, and once the kids are in bed the snacking begins.

I am going to try replacing all that snacking with drinking water. Of course then I'll probably be up all night peeing!! :lmao:
I think you are doing great! Lastnight I had a hard time not snacking after DS went to bed. I think it will be my hardest habit to break.

Good news :cheer2:

The online research I have been doing this morning is indicating that this opinion has changed in the last couple of years, and that caffeinated beverages DO count towards your total water intake. :woohoo: Can't give up caffeine completely. Anyhow, here are some articles for those that are interested:

Okies since some people had posted recipes I think that I will post one that I thought would be intresting and good to try.

Spicy Black Bean Burgers

Serves: 6
Serving Size: 1 patty

These burgers are spiced to perfection. To make them even spicier, you could melt jalapeno soy cheese on each patty and serve topped with salsa. Reprinted with permission from HOW IT ALL VEGAN! by Tanya Barnard and Sarah Kramer (www.GoVegan.net) Arsenal Pulp Press.

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup flour
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1 small hot or jalapeno pepper, minced
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 medium red pepper, diced
2 cups cooked or canned black beans, mashed
1/2 cup corn niblets
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1/4 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp chili powder
2 tbsp parsley, minced (optional)

DIRECTIONS
1. On a small plate, set aside flour for coating. In a medium saucepan, sauté the onion, garlic, oregano, and hot peppers in oil on medium-high heat until the onions are translucent. Add the peppers and sauté another 2 minutes, until pepper is tender. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a potato masher or fork. Stir in the vegetables (including the corn), breadcrumbs, cumin, salt, chili powder, and parsley. Mix well. Divide and shape into 6 patties.

3. Lay down each patty in flour, coating each side. Cook on a lightly oiled frying pan on medium-high heat for 5-10 minutes or until browned on both sides.

De-Stress in 3 Minutes or Less
Stop Emotional Eating Before It Starts
-- By Dean Anderson, Behavioral Psychology Expert

What is the single, most common problem that most dieters face when trying to lose weight? Will power? Nah. Temptation? Sometimes. Emotional eating? Bingo! That’s why it takes so much more than good intentions and information about nutrition and exercise to be successful. The ability to manage difficult situations and feelings effectively—without turning to food and eating—is a necessary foundation for a successful weight loss plan and healthy lifestyle.

Fortunately, there are many proactive steps you can take to keep functioning on all your mental cylinders during tough times. These steps range widely from basic relaxation techniques to the development of a reliable support network. Other options include:
Keeping a food journal to help you identify your emotional eating triggers
Cultivating mental and emotional well-being through practices like meditation, mindfulness, massage, and yoga
Developing good problem solving skills
Turning to the Message Boards for help and support when you need it; offering help to others as a way to get your mind off your own troubles and gain a little perspective on things
But all of these things take time, and there are many instances when you need something you can do right now, to keep yourself grounded, focused and able to make good decisions. After all, you don’t always have time to take a walk, relax in a hot bath or call a friend to talk things over. That’s what we’ll be talking about here—a 3-minute trick for handling stressful situations in the moment.

Minute 1: Stay Grounded
Emotional eating happens when you lose your connection to your grounded self. Stress itself is not what makes you reach for something to eat. In fact, stress is often a good thing and your grounded self knows this! We need the physical stress of exercise to keep our bodies in good shape just as we need the stress of intellectual and emotional challenges to keep our minds healthy.

Nine times out of ten, what really leads to emotional eating is getting caught in a "mind storm" of worst-case scenarios, projections, misinterpretations, and all the emotional overreactions that come with these thoughts. This "storm" turns a manageable challenge into something that makes you feel helpless, overwhelmed, ashamed or afraid—and sends you to the kitchen to find something to stuff those extreme feelings. When you can stay grounded in the moment of stress, you have many more options.

Here are some simple ideas to keep you grounded when something (or someone) pushes your buttons and your feelings start to spiral out of control:

Take a few deep breaths. (You can also count to 10, if that helps.) If the stressful situation involves someone else, take a timeout and agree to continue the discussion in a few minutes.
Remind yourself where you are. Take a look around, noticing and naming the colors and shapes in the space around you.
Notice the physical sensations you are experiencing. Whether it's a sinking feeling, turmoil in your stomach, tension in your hands or jaw, restricted breathing, or heat on the back of your neck, try to name the feelings that go with the sensation. Is that sinking feeling fear, or dread? Is the heat a symptom of anger?
The idea here is to stay in your body and in the moment—with what’s real—instead of going inside your mind where all those unreal scenarios are just waiting to get spun out-of-control.

Minute 2: Reality Check
Once you’re calm enough to start thinking productively, put all those thoughts that are clamoring for attention inside your head through a quick reality check. Here are several very common thought patterns that have no place in reality. Do any of these apply to you?

All or nothing thinking
Example: You go over your calorie limit or eat something on your “forbidden” list, and then decide to keep eating because you’ve already “blown it” for today. Reality: Weight loss is not a one-day event. If you stop overeating now, you’ll gain less and have less to re-lose later. That’s something to feel good about!

Reading your own thoughts into someone else’s words
Example: Someone made a mildly critical or unsupportive remark to you, and you feel completely devastated. Reality: The more bothered you are by such remarks, the more likely it is that you are being overly critical of yourself. When you treat yourself with respect, what others say won’t matter nearly so much.

Either-Or thinking
Example: You make a mistake or have a bad day and feel like a complete and hopeless failure. Reality: No one does well all the time. Mistakes are a necessary and valuable opportunity to learn—if you don’t waste them by getting down on yourself.

Taking care of other people’s business
Example: Something is going badly for someone you care about, and you feel responsible, or pressured to fix it. Reality: People need to learn from their own problems. You aren’t doing anyone a favor by trying to fix things just to make yourself feel better.

Minute 3: Putting Things in Perspective
Most common problems that you face in everyday life are much easier to handle when you keep them in perspective and avoid making mountains out of molehills. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to make sure you aren’t in the mountain-making business:
How big a deal is this, anyway? If I knew I was going to die in a week, would this be something I would want to spend this minute of my remaining time on?
Will any bad things happen if I postpone thinking about this until I have more time to figure things out?
Do I have all the information I need to decide how to respond to this? Do I really know what’s going on here, or am I making assumptions? Am I worrying about things that might not even happen? What do I need to check out before taking action?
Is there anything I can do right now that will change or help this situation?
Am I trying to control something I can't, like what other people think, say, or do?
Have I really thought through this problem, and broken it down into manageable pieces I can handle one-at-a-time?

Use this approach whenever your thoughts or situations begin to feel overwhelming, and you'll quickly find that the mountains that seem impossible at first can quickly morph into what they really are—manageable hills that you DO have the ability to climb. All it takes is three little minutes of your time.

I think you did wonderful Beth. For the snacks at night you could also try fruit or some of those 100 Calorie snacks, they make them in so many varieties now. My biggest thing is ice cream and I have found some sugar free stuff that is actually very good, and Healthy Choice makes a Mocha Swirl bar that is 90 calories and is wonderful.

Wendy thanks for the article, I think it was very helpful!!

Great first day Beth!

My first day was going well until I and had chinese take-out for dinner, though my portion was much smaller than I would have had ordinarily, and I did my 30 minute walk. I've been going through a pretty challenging time right now, and as usual, I use food for comfort. My major goal is to break that habit.

Great article Wendy!

I signed up both Jess and Jonathan for gymnastics at the Y. Jon will go on Monday's and Jess on Tuesdays. That will give me 45 minutes of workout time, two days in a row. :yay:

It sounds like everyone is off to a really good start with making small changes and not going nuts.

My worst habit was getting into bed at night and reading and snacking. The worst thing you can do, eat right before bed. So that is the habit that I am trying to break this week.

Also, I am addicted to coke, so I am limiting myself to one per day. I bought some of those Minute Maid Light Drinks in a can, I think I bought Raspberry Passion (or something like that), they are only 10 calories per can, and so I grab one of those instead of a coke.

Interesting about the TV show. I don't think I could do it though.
Me either. It's one thing to go public here about my weight, it's another to do it on tv!!

I did ok yesterday until night time. Sure enough, that was my down fall. I ended up snacking on a mini bag of light buttered popcorn and a piece of chocolate.

Oh well. It could have been worse. I managed to leave the cookies and cream ice cream alone. :thumbsup2

And today is a new day. Sounds like everyone is doing great!!! :cool1:

I used to go to OA meetings and they said forget about taking it day by day. Sometimes you just have to take it hour by hour.

I have made out a grocery shopping list and am getting things like apples and carrots to keep on hand for snacks. As well as some Crystal Light to help with the water intake.

Good luck to everyone and keep the ideas, recipes, and tips coming!!! :yay:

Thanks Debbie.

I use food for comfort too. Heck, food is my drug of choice. :sad2: So I know how hard that is.

I think you did good. If you think of this as a life long change then you'll realize that getting Chinese take-out isn't that bad.
It's not like you are never again in your life going to order take-out, or have a piece of birthday cake, or a Christmas cookie. kwim?

It's more about portion control which it sounds like you did, and getting moving, also something you did. And not doing those things on a daily basis but rather on occasion as more of a treat.

For example, we will have a family get-together for Easter. I already know that I want to enjoy myself and eat what I want that day along with the rest of my family. So between now and then, I will do my best to stay on track, allow myself to spurge that day, and then get right back on track.

For someone like me who uses food as comfort, that's a much better way of doing it. It's something that is planned rather than just a random binge that was brought on by stress or whatever.

In any case, I think you are doing great!!! :cheer2:

Whoo-hoo! Go Jenna!!

Sounds like you are really off to a great start!! And night time snacking is also my weakness. Nothing like climbing into bed with a movie and a bowl of ice cream. :sad2:

Oh wait!! Yes, there is!! Going on a new shopping spree cause all the old clothes are to freakin big!!! ;) We'll just have to hold onto that thought when the temptation strikes.

After all, we are planning a mall shopping day in November. Wouldn't it be great if we all treated ourselves to some new skinny clothes by then. :cool1: :cool1:

Quote for the day:

The difference between try and triumph is just a little umph!

Good afternoon girls!

Wendy, great article.

Beth, you have to be realistic about weight loss and I think you are. Anyone who thinks I'm not having HOB pasta this weekend is crazy. I will enjoy that and do my best the other days of the week. This particular methodology is one reason I really love WW. You can plan for your splurges and know they won't destroy everything you've done.

Jenna, great about the Y. I need to check out those swim lessons. If I could even go up front I'd be doing good. But I am starting to think working out with a bunch of people would be better that with that one super skinny chick or buff guy using the weight room. ;)

Whoo-hoo! Go Jenna!!

Beth, that's kind of how all this got started. My boss used to do that, if you lost a size, she would get the gift card for a clothing store. That's where the idea comes from. Its fun to go buy yourself a new outfit when your other ones are getting too big.

Imagine how many sizes we could lose before November. :goodvibes

We are off to a pretty good start.

I had a little mishap today. Cooper and I were at the arena watching Cassie skate and we were cold. I went up to the canteen to get us some hot chocolate and proceeded to put 3 creamers in each and then when I was halfway through drinking it I remembered that I am trying to watch what I eat :sad2: I can't believe it slipped my mind like that :confused3

Oh well, the hot chocolate helped us warm up :thumbsup2

Kat, that is a great idea about getting the gift card after losing a size. I might try that out.

I have done that so many times. Not that exact thing but you know what I mean.

These bad habits of mine have been going on for so long that I will do stuff like that without even thinking about it or realizing it.

They say it takes 30 days for something to become a habit. So I just have to keep working at drinking the water and making better choices.

Tonite I had good intentions but they went overboard. :sad2: I made some rice and veges for dinner. But they were so good I had two huge platefuls!! Now I am stuffed.
Oh well. It has to be better than a couple slices of pizza. Hopefully......:rolleyes1

A couple of plates of rice and veges has to be better than pizza. At least you eat veges too. I can't stand the things.

It sures sounds like everyone is off to a good start. I think at this stage, becoming aware of eating habits is an important first step to replacing them with better habits. I like to start my day with a smoothie. For lent I gave have given up one meal a day, and I am surprised how well that is going. My thought was to skip lunch, and just not eat between breakfast and dinner. However, there are days when I have lunch plans, so I will skip one of my other meals. Probably breakfast.

There is a guy at work who keeps a dish of those oversized mint lifesavers at his desk. When I am hungry, I have one of those. Something about the mint acts as an appetite supressant. Also, when the hunger starts working on me, I read from my lent book.

Hopefully you are not doing this  and dismissing me as some holy roller wacko. However, I did attend a few weeks of a 12 week course (I have yet to complete the course! Maybe I'll pick it up at during another session) at my church. The course is called the Light Weigh. It is pretty heavy on Catholic doctrine. As I said, I did not finish the class. However, I did get an important message from the class. The theory is that we stuff our selves with food to try to fill some void. Obviously the goal of this class was to fill the void with God, and the method was through teaching of Catholic history and such. My summary was that we were to fill our heart hole, not our pie hole! Anyway, I think there is something to this. While I think God will work for my heart hole, you may fill your heart hole some other way. When we are satisfied in our hearts, we will not have to keep stuffing ourselves with food. If ou want to learn more, I think you can find them at lightweigh.com.

Off to do the dishes! Oh, fish and french fries for dinner!

Hi ladies! Sounds like everyone is doing good, every little step is progress for us!

I find if I am craving something sweet, a small glass of lowfat chocolate milk will help me.

The hospital was having free ice cream sundaes tonight, and even though it hasn't ended yet I have avoided the temptation so far, my victory for the day!

I am craving pizza so bad, I think I will treat myself to that this weekend.

I feel good about this so far, I feel like I have my mind made up this time to get healthy, I hope this feeling continues.

Continued good luck! :wizard:

Beth, that is some great motivation, shopping for new clothes in November!!! I will keep reminding myself of that, I love it!!!

The only times I have ever been successful with losing weight, was with not cutting everything out. I always give myself one meal a week when we go out to dinner where I eat what I want. Usually it is cheese enchiladas, lol.

It is my treat for doing good all week.

So enjoy your pasta this weekend Kat!:goodvibes

I think you are exactly right. There is a reason why many people overeat, and it is usually filliing some void. I saw your recipe earlier for the breakfast smoothie, and it sounded delicious, I am going to have to try that!:thumbsup2
