I travel down from Bolton but when I put Bolton as the start of the journey it will often take me via Wigan and the price is high. Sometimes its the same price from Bolton via Manchester as direct for manchester and sometimes its about £50 more and no way does it cost £50 to get from Bolton to Manchester (its about £2).So I just play around with it and see what different prices come up

The direct trains from manchester usually go every hour and are usually with Cross Country

Hey Claire.....I had a look at trains last night & it will take about 3 hours & £60+....so I am pretty sure I will drive down, only takes two hours. Do you want a jump in with me hun.

It makes more sense.....Cheaper, less time & not having to drag our cases and change trains four times!

I really don't mind driving - i've already warned hubby I am nicking his car that weekend. Anyway as you say we've plenty of time to plan.

I tried it from Warrington Bank Quay, but I'll play around with it over the weekend and see if there's any other local ones which are cheaper Thanks for the advice!

Yep - that was me

As I mentioned back there - it's very easy to get from the airport to the central station, so it's worth looking into as Southampton is a fairly small, local airport so it's very quick and easy to use

Prices to/from manchester are normally about £28 each way - not sure what other airports fly to southampton...

Bournemouth isn't too far away either and I know ryanair fly there - not sure how far bournemouth airport is from a railway station though, but it might be worth looking into as ryanair flights can be very cheap

Bournemouth Airport is actually nearer to Christchurch and would cost about £10 in a taxi to Christchurch Station . Just had a look at the trains and they're £9.80 each way which is annoying as a day return is only £9.80.

I'll definitely come up for the shopping ( on the train of course, wouldn't want to be stopped for drunk driving ).
May even come up for the weekend. Have got as far as looking at the hotel but all twin rooms have gone.
Know if I come up early Saturday and enjoy myself, I won't want to go home

Just had a look at Flybe Manchester to Southampton and it's showing £4.24 plus taxes on the Fri and either £27.24 plus taxes ( leaving 10.55am) or £4.24 plus taxes( leaving 20.05pm )on the Sunday.

Hope it's useful for someone.
