I know that the Dis is not a replacement for medical advice. And I will be calling my doctor for an appointment tomorrow or going to urgent care today if the problem gets worse.

It all started with chest pains on Tuesday. I woke up on Wednesday feeling really yucky with a headache and backache. I slept all day which is odd for me because I have cronic insomnia. I went to the doctor on Thursday and tested positive for the flu. The doctor said it was the H1N1. He gave me Tamiflu. I'm feeling much better and most of my symptoms are gone. The one really troubling one remains. I have severe chest pains. It hurts to swallow. It feels like the chest muscles are crushing me. Last night the pain was unbearable. I was very close to going to the emergency room. The pain got less horrible last night after I took my sleeping medicine. I don't know if the meds relaxed my muscles. This morning the pain came back but not as severe.
Any ideas about whats wrong would be great. I don't want to go to the doctor tomorrow and have it be dismissed as nothing or just an asthma flare up. TIA.

ALL CHEST PAIN NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED. It may be "nothing". It may be absolutely something serious. Regardless of age, you need to be seen ASAP.

Not a Dr. but I've heard the H1N1 can go into pneumonia. I had pneumonia last year. It can make your chest and back hurt. I'd get it checked out. The best case scenario is that it is only your asthma. Don't be afraid to hear that. I thought I had a bad cold and only went to get a Dr. note for work!!! I was REALLY sick!

You really should go to the ER to be checked out. They would rather you come in and have it be nothing than to come in in fell cardiac arrest.

Go and feel better.

Severe chest pains need to be investigated. My suggestion is to go to the ER.

Are you coughing alot?

I have had simething similar a couple of times. Once it was caused by pleurisy - an inflammation of the lining of the lungs. Another time it was caused by an inflamation of the connective tissue in the chest/ribs from all the coughing I had been doing (I think that had a name, but I can't remember what it was). Both of those things were horribly painful and uncomfortable. It could also be pneumonia or even something more serious.

Bottom line, though, is that unless you know otherwise you should always assume that chest pain is something serious. I agree with the other posters that you should go to the emergency room (or other urgent care, if that's an option.)

Go to the ER and check it out. Heart disease is one of the number one misdiagnosed problems in women so you need to go and make sure they do not fluff you off and send you home. Do not downplay your symptoms.

You should go to the ER or an emergency care center today and have it checked out.

I get costochondritis when I have a virus. It is very painful and sounds exactly like what you are describing. Could be pneumonia or pleurisy too.

Hope you start feeling better.
