Discovery could lead to new direction for prevention, treatment research
Researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center have found that women with hypothyroidism -- a common thyroid gland disorder involving an underactive thyroid -- appear to have a reduced chance of developing invasive breast cancer, according to a study published in the March 15 issue of Cancer, which was published online Feb. 14.
In a retrospective case-control study of 2,226 females, researchers found that women with primary hypothyroidism had a 61 percent lower risk of developing invasive breast cancer. Additionally, women newly diagnosed with breast cancer were 57 percent less likely to have the under-active thyroid gland condition compared to a control group of healthy women.

Even more, the breast cancer patients on the study who also had a history of hypothyroidism tended to be older when diagnosed and had a less aggressive, slower-progressing variety of the disease that was sensitive to estrogen treatment.

"These intriguing and very exciting findings suggest a biological role of thyroid hormone in women with breast cancer that could offer some prognostic or therapeutic value, perhaps suggesting novel preventive strategies," says Massimo Cristofanilli, M.D., associate professor in M. D. Anderson’s Department of Breast Medical Oncology and the study’s lead author. “The study also draws attention to the role of thyroid hormone and its potential interaction with estrogen to promote the onset of breast cancer. We need to consider that while in the past we’ve looked only at the role of estrogen on breast tissue to promote the onset of cancer - thereby promoting research that brought therapeutic and preventive hormonal approaches to the patient - many more studies need to be done to explore the role of other hormones.”

The influence of thyroid gland disease on breast cancer has been debated for some time. Other smaller studies have focused on a population of women with several thyroid conditions, such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid), thyroid cancer and others, and reported conflicting results on the incidence of breast cancer. Consequentially, researchers were not sure what to make of the different findings, Cristofanilli says.

M. D. Anderson’s study is the first clinical investigation to examine the characteristics of invasive breast cancer in patients with hypothyroidism and compare the incidence of this common condition with a carefully selected matched control group. The study compared the medical records of 1,136 women treated at M. D. Anderson for breast cancer to those of 1,088 healthy women who came to the institution for breast cancer screening.

"Thyroid hormone and estrogen both share similar pathways in regulating proliferation and growth in the target cells, including cancer cells. This well known phenomenon of cross-talk between the receptor of these hormones may promote or inhibit thereby determining the “fate” of a cell towards either a regulated growth or a cancer," he says. “If results of a planned M. D. Anderson prospective study bear out this conclusion, then it may be possible to design a treatment that specifically and narrowly targets thyroid hormone receptors, which might provide enough influence on the target cells to help prevent breast cancer –– perhaps even serving as a complement to tamoxifen,” Cristofanilli says.

Even before this research is concluded, Cristofanilli believes that, as a first step, all women diagnosed with breast cancer should have their thyroid function tested to detect common disorders ¯ namely hyper- or hypothyroidism ¯ so that women with both conditions can be closely monitored.

Nuclear receptors for thyroid hormone and estrogen are part of the "superfamily" of receptors that contribute to control cell growth and differentiation. Hormones must bind to this family of important proteins to exert their functions, and depending on the hormone to which they bind, can either stimulate or inhibit the growth of cells, Cristofanilli says.

Estrogen controls growth of female reproductive tissues, such as is found in the breasts, and thyroid hormones control energy metabolism in tissue.

Hypothyroidism — a condition estimated to affect approximately 20 percent of older women — is produced when the thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, fails to produce enough thyroid hormone. Insufficient levels of specific types of thyroid hormone may affect all body functions, and can slow patient functioning, causing mental and physical sluggishness.

Other researchers contributing to the M. D. Anderson study include: Gabriel Hortobagyi, M.D., chairman of the Department of Breast Medical Oncology; Richard Theriault, D.O.; Therese Bevers, M.D.; Sara Strom, Ph.D.; Savitri Krishnamurthy, M.D.; Yuko Yamamura; Shu-Wan Kau; Modesto Patangan; and Limin Hsu.

Linda....what a fantastic birthday surprise for your kids and a special trip for you and DH :teeth: And my guess was Laurabelle too for the sunrise walk! :)

NO rain in NH today though VERY windy and not much blue sky, I was glad I had my earmuffs on the walk...DH and I did the 5 miles in about an hour and a half. When individual and team fundraising recognition was read a the end, our had team raised the third highest amount. The Walk in my city raised over $350,000....the largest per capita of all the Making Strides walks, for the second year in a row! I got a little teary when they called all Survivors up for a photo, (I think DH was a little choked up at that point too) I stood with one of my support group ladies who finished her chemo last week, and they played a song off that new Olivia Newton John CD. I made an awesome bookmark in the Survivor tent before the walk (a "stamping" business had materials) . My DH's cousin's house is on the walk route and she (the one who couldn't walk because her father is not expected to live much longer) was sitting outside looking for our team as the thousands and thousands of walkers streamed by...
I will post some pics but have to get them transferred from memory stick to CD because of a convoluted problem with my PC...so it may be a few days. There is a beautiful little "Garden of Hope" at the a city's athletic fields (where the Walk orignated) with a plaque dedicating it to lives touched by breast cancer. It has purple mums forming the ribbon symbol...really lovely...can't wait to share the pics. I thought of you all as I had a quiet moment at the little garden ...all alone though steps away were throngs of thousands! It was really a great afternoon....

GAGWTA....wow, been a time since I have stopped by to say hello to all the great ladies here. :goodvibes

need_a_Disney_fix, glad to see you here, and what good news about your mom. That is great, I recall how upbeat Marie felt at times with her wig, and what a good experience she had with it and the place she got it. And being there through all those chemo treatments back then sure gave me a better understanding of it all too.

Nice to see you, Amy. And LauraJean, good to hear you coming along well.

Chris, nice to 'see' you, looking forward to seeing you guys in a few weeks at Gino's. :cool1: I know your concern. And what great success, congratulations.

Melissa, good news. And I too recall meeting Vince's birth-mom several years back, quite emotional. And such a good experience. Glad it went well.

Robin, hope you are doing well, best wishes coming your way. Maybe a Sabrett with you some day if I am in NYC again?

Kristin, what a moving story. So sorry about your dad. Good to hear you are doing well. I keep reminding our DD, Natalie, almost 25, to keep doing her BSE's, and to get in to see a doc for an exam. She says she does the BSE's, but no doc yet. :(

RiceOwl, a high five from a guy to a guy here. :goodvibes

Snappy, I hear ya. And venting is part of therapy, right?

Good to hear about your mom, SillyMe. :goodvibes Great.

Laura, I have had low thyroid (hypo) for many years, take a synthroid a day, works great. Hope yours goes well too.

Ann, sorry about the family. :( And do hope it dries out there, you guys have had SO much rain. I wish you could send us some. The walk sounds great, you did well. :goodvibes

Linda, a spur of the moment to WDW!! How neat is that!!!!! :cool1:

Like I said, it has been too long since I stopped by. I see the tread almost every day, I have it subscribed to. I need to say hello more often to some of the neatest ladies around.

And here, on our end, Marie saw her oncologist for her 6 month (I think it was close to a year) checkup. All is well. :goodvibes 7 years. And back then we were devastate to hear the dx, Stage III, 11 lymph nodes. But Marie rocks. :cool1:

I saw Melissa Etheridge mentioned a few times here, I saw here tonight on Stone Phillips show. I think she reminded me to stop by here and say hello.

Before I came here tonight, I uploaded to my website the following song she wrote, when she was getting her chemo treatments, knowing she was going to 'be out of it' for a few days after, not responding much to her partner. Here are the lyrics, and a link to listen. It is beautiful, so moving, brings a tear. :sad1: But SO VERY HOPEFUL, not giving in to the beast.

Bravely you let go of my hand
I can't speak yet you understand
Where I go now I go alone
This path I walk these days of stone

And the angels are calling

[Chorus:]
I must go away
Wait for me here
Silently stay
And don't ask me why
Only believe
This is not good bye

All of my strength all my desire
Still cannot melt this breath of fire
I go to meet some kind of test
Bury the truth that scars my chest
And the angels are calling and calling

[Chorus]

I gathered all my courage
I shaved off all my fear
With this banner on my shoulder
I hold your essence near

And the angels are calling and calling and calling

Love you all, ladies.'s :goodvibes

I had to add this one also, also by Melissa, and like all you women, it rocks............

I Run For Life

It's been years since they told her about it
The darkness her body possessed
And the scars are still there in the mirror
Everyday that she gets herself dressed
Though the pain is miles and miles behind her
And the fear is now a docile beast
If you ask her why she is still running
She'll tell you it makes her complete

[Chorus:]
I run for hope
I run to feel
I run for the truth
For all that is real
I run for your mother your sister your wife
I run for you and me my friend I run for life

It's a blur since they told me about it
How the darkness had taken its toll
And they cut into my skin and they cut into my body
But they will never get a piece of my soul
And now I'm still learning the lesson
To waken when I hear the call
And if you ask me why I am still running
I'll tell you I run for us all

[Chorus]

And someday if they tell you about it
If the darkness knocks on your door
Remember her remember me
We will be running as we have before
Running for answers
Running for more

There's one more thing that will make my trip even more of a "treat" than it already is. I'll be meeting a special friend for a sunrise walk on one of the mornings. Anyone care to guess who it is? :wave2:

Hee hee hee! I cannot wait to "meet" you Linda! I'm so excited to see you in person! See you Saturday morning! :Pinkbounc

Ann- I knew it would be a special day for you! :sunny: Congrats on raising so much $... That's awesome!!!

Laurie- Thank you so much for all the info! I'm saving it. Do you see an endocrinologist or your reg. doc for it? It's interesting to read about the MD Anderson study too. I go to a university hospital and they're all about studies! I have done so many studies and clinical trials I've lost track! I just did one on Friday on the side effects on my current meds. I love doing those! I did two on Tamoxifen a few years ago. If the docs don't have it documented from patients as a side effect, then they won't say it is. I like to be able to tell it like it is! ;)

Dan- It's so good to see you! Congrats to Marie! :cheer2: In Dec. I'm celebrating 7 yrs too! I did catch Melissa on Dateline last night. I loved so many things that she said. I'm going to have to buy her new album!

:grouphug:

Robin, hope you are doing well, best wishes coming your way. Maybe a Sabrett with you some day if I am in NYC again?

sure, dan, why not?

Jen's foot is getting better, she's still limping but she'll be ok.

Re:birthday parties, DD9 said something about a skating party. A few months ago she wanted a bowling party for her birthday. I am not enthused about either choice.

Is this age too young just to take a group out to eat? I need EASY right now.

when Jen was that age, she had a friend who invited everyone to a Japanese hibachi restaurant to celebrate her birthday. Becca went to a similar party when she was 10.

whatever is easiest for you right now, snappy. it'll be fun, I'm sure.

Hi all! Thanks for stopping by for a visit, Dan! Good to hear from you, glad Marie is doing so well!

I haven't been around much the last week or so. I've been in a funk, just real depressed for some reason. No medical problems (although my heels are starting to hurt again). It's just that all the "little stuff" is really bugging me lately. So I've just been keeping quiet (so I don't say something I'll regret) and waiting for the mood to pass. Guess it's just the change in seasons, although I really like autumn. Maybe my first Lupron shot (I got it back in July) has finally taken total effect and now I'm in menopause big-time. I don't know. I'm scheduled for another Lupron shot on Thursday.

Hope everyone has a good day, and all tests come out good.

GAGWTA!

:wizard: ~~~***GAGWTA sistas***~~~ :wizard:

Amy- It's good to hear from you! I'm sorry you're feeling down. You know you can come here in good times or bad...The Lupron can def. affect you in that way. I don't know if there's something in the air or what, but I have a bunch of sistas on my online and in person support groups starting antidepressants this month. I told them maybe we should install an Effexor gumball machine... :teeth: that seems to be the onc's drug of choice!

snappy Laurie- I think easy for mom is good! ::yes:: My youngest turned 9 over the summer. We have a pool, so she has had pool parties since we've lived here. Easy for me (believe it or not!) 'cause they're outside the whole time! We have a Rainforest Cafe here at our mall, lots of people take the kids there for birthday meals. And hey, she's the birthday girl, I'm sure whatever you plan she'll be happy!

Packing here and keeping an eye on Wilma...though there's nothing coming between me & Mickey! ::MickeyMo

Laura, glad you are not letting Wilma deter you from your trip.

Thanks for advice all, on the party. I am really on the fence still.

I seemed to have injured my back and it escalated Sunday.
Went to the orthopedic and got a muscle relaxer, it hasn't helped, he has me on low dosage, just at night rather than 3X a day, knowing I carpool alot, and the med makes you drowsy.I don't think I could drive except for an emergency. I am having regular muscle spasms any time I hyperextend (straighten up), they were constant when I first got up. I think it took me 10 minutes to force myself to get up out of the bed. I am trying to walk around the house as much as possible. Seems like movement somehow stretches the back. Doc said I could walk and ride my bike if I wanted but no swimming until this resolves, there is no way I want to walk outside, I needed to hold on to furniture this am.

DH stayed around until I got dressed (couldn't get underwear and pants on),
then he left for N. O. to deal with the blasted flood insurance adjuster on his mother's house and to take measurements of the upstairs since the homeowner's policy is supposed to maybe cover some of the non flood damage due to the extensive roof damage and destruction of the upstairs floor.

He promised to return before soccer practice carpool at 6 pm. Soccer practice does not qualify for an emergency to me. Plus it is so far, the carpool driver just has to stay and sit on the bleachers until the end, the fields are too far from home. Can't do bleachers, no way Jose.

I am never going to cut the grass again. It must have done something, and the swimming just sealed it. I must have a screw loose to have even attempted it. At least my xrays were good except for osteopena. Doc said to do another bone density test next year to compare to last year's results and maybe go on Fosamex.

It's 2 pm now, I have been keeping movin' all day, I feel a lot better. Guess I'll survive after all. What a ninny I am.

Ooooh no, snappy Laurie....owie! I'm so sorry :( Sending prayers and some back-healing-pixie-dust to you :wizard: I think never cutting the lawn again is a good idea ;)

Hi Dan :wave2:

Amy :grouphug: I think we all have those times and this too shall pass...hang in there!

How is everyone today?

Does anyone need encouragement or have good news to share?

:mickeybar~~~***GAGWTA sistas***~~~:mickeybar

snappy Laurie- I'm so sorry you're in so much pain. :sad2: Is there anything else they can do? I pulled a muscle in my back a few years ago and Vioxx ended up doing the trick. Of course, that's not an option anymore.
Thank God your mil had flood insurance! What a nightmare going through the whole process though. I hope they are generous with her. Saying prayers for both you and your mil...

4myson-

Can you believe Wilma turned into a Cat. 5 overnight!?! :earseek: I'm trying to decide if I should change what I have packed, I'm def. adding to it. I might go buy some little snacky things for the room just in case... hoping and praying we don't need it! I've read Disney resorts are the best dealing with hurricanes...I'm counting on it! We're still excited to be going!!! :Pinkbounc Hoping Sunday night's MNSSHP isn't a wash out... :umbrella:

GAGWTA!! :sunny:

Snappy, so sorry to hear about your back. Spasms are so painful. Rest, rest, rest! This is a common injury in nurses - it just takes time to heal, but it will. You have to be very careful not to re-injure it while it's healing. Re-injury can occur with even the littlest thing so you really have to try to just let it relax and heal (as difficult as that can be). It's always something, isn't it?

4myson :wave2: Thanks for stopping by, how are you?

Laura, hope you're packing your raincoat! :teeth: I agree, a little scary but we'll be
singinrain.gif
anyway! I'm kicking myself because I'd ordered nice raincoats for everyone two weeks ago but sent mine back because I didn't like the color. Oh well, guess I'll be bringing my old yellow MM poncho while the rest of my family's sporting their spiffy new slickers, LOL!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you as far as Sunday goes. I'm a little concerned myself because we're supposed to come home Sunday. We were there during Frances and they closed down the airport I believe Sat into Sunday so we had to take an earlier flight home (and luckily we got one). Oh well, not going to worry about it, we're going; we're staying; we'll make it home eventually. :rotfl:

I also wanted to let you know if you don't already, that you can print up your SWA boarding passes 24 hrs in advance now which I didn't realize. I was up until 11pm waiting for midnight, so tired from the last few days. I logged on the SWA website and realized I could do this which was kind of neat.

Looking forward to seeing you Saturday! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

GAGWTA!

I've never posted here before, but have read just a bit, and you all seem like a great group of girls who are so supportive and fun! :sunny:

I'm not a survivor myself, but have a very close friend IRL who is. I've walked in our local breast cancer walks to raise money and show support the last 3 years. :goodvibes The most recent one my 12 yr old DD also walked with us.

Just wanted to send good thoughts to all, and ask for some good thoughts, P& PD myself, on Tuesday I'm having surgery to have an ovarian cyst removed, should be quick out-patient procedure, but there's always that 2% chance it might be problematic.

Have a good day!

Glad you stopped by, SunFloridaDisney!! I love your user name too. I am hoping your name comes true this weekend for our friends, Laurabelle and Pea-n-me.

Good luck with your surgery on Tuesday. Please let us know how it goes.
Sending some prayers and pixie dust your way for now.

Wilma looks wicked. I especially don't like the low atmospheric pressure reading, the lowest on record, ever? Is this possible? I am hoping the water in the gulf is lower in temp than it was in August and September. I'll have to check the hurricane blogsite I have in my favorites, several of the guys who post there really have a handle on this stuff.

My back is mucho better, although lying in bed and especially getting out of bed accelerates the spasms. It felt better yesterday after I kept busy just walking around the house. I was able to walk down the street yesterday and even did 30 minutes on my stationery bike at a slow pace. Lots of gentle stretching is definitely helping. I am venturing out today to meet with DD9's class other room mother so we can set up the class's Halloween festivities.
I love this stuff.

How was the big birthday party, Linda? Did the weather cooperate?

Ann, has the weather improved up there?

Linda, my DH spent several hours with the claims guy, they both took copious measurements. DH was satisfied that the guy did a thorough job. I think it is a little silly. Clearly her losses exceed her flood insurance policy limits. I think the issue is more how much will be covered by the homeowners after the large wind damage/hurricane deductible practically everyone has on their policy now. We are hoping she will collect some from the homeowners since the upstairs would have been ok if the roof had not had such extensive damage (there was actually a gaping hole in the bathroom and the wind drove rain thoughout the entire upstairs). The interior ceilings up there have all collapsed, this was not a flooding event.

Anyway, DH has done all he can insurance wise.

GAGWTA everyone. And go away Wilma!!

Laurie

Laura and Linda - I hope you don't have too bad of weather. We were in WDW during a hurricane a few years ago, and the weather was icky. Until the day of the hurricane, it was very breezy but sun shine all day long. You will see all the maintenance people roping everything down. Disney Quest is a great place to go to when it's raining and don't feel like a park. Bring your laptop, and let us know how you make out.

Snappy - I am sending prayers and pixie dust your way. I hope you feel better soon.

4myson - Hello!

Where's Amy and Debbie?

Just a quick check-in. DS's Eagle Court of Honor is Sunday. I'm stressed, trying to get it all together. Just wanted you to know that all is well. And I am reading quickly through our thread. Still praying for sisters, just not having much time to post. GAGWTA! :wave2:

Thanks, all. I'm leaving in two hours, going to try not to worry about the weather. :wizard: Ordered myself a new raincoat, having it shipped overnight to our resort, LOL! :umbrella:

This surprise is going to be so much fun for the kids. They went off to school this morning, still no idea. I feel kind of mean because we've been doing nothing but looking at MNSSHP pictures and listening to Disney music - the poor kids are salivating, LOL. :rotfl: They have mentioned a couple of times how fun it would be if they could go to WDW for their birthday and we just laughed it off. They're really going to be amazed this afternoon when they find out we're really going. :love2: (snappy, the party was fun Sunday and weather was good - take care of that back, ok?)

If I can get on the internet I'll let you know how we're doing! :sunny: (Laurajean, this is all your fault - Ding fares, sheesh...) :rotfl2:

Very cool about your DS's Court of Honor for making Eagle Scout. What did he do for his Eagle scout project?

My DS's project was in our church's Biblical garden. He tore down an old fence and built a new one that looks MUCH better. He also edged all the flower beds with rock because they were having problems with errosion. It looks beautiful! I was just comparing the before and after pictures in his scrapbook. It's quite a change. I'm trying to finish up these scrapbooks before dinner. Hope I get them done. I'm ready to scratch them off my list.

Looks like rain. I think storms are getting ready to roll through. Back to work. :wave2:
