Is there consensus on which book we're gonna read for our first? I'd vote for something a little light (am currently plowing through Legacy of Ashes and it's very good -- but hard to put down and immediately resume having happy holiday thoughts... :santa: )

I think the poll (on whether or not to have a book club) has another week to run.

Therefore, suggestions are still welcome.

Some of my suggestions:
- The Eyre Affair (already suggested)
- The Dark is Rising (kids lit, but, a favourite)
- The Giver (billed as kids lit, but, you need to be an adult to "get it")
- The Martian Child (suggested in another thread by MrVisible--I know nothing other than what he said)
- The Heart is a Lonely Hunter
- The Red Tent (suggested by my DW: good, but, a bit deep)
- The Information by Martin Amis (I think) (I don't actually think this is a good book for a book club, but it's a great book for anyone who likes to read--it's hard to get through, but, has SOOO many layers.)

I know that there are other great books I'd like to read, but the titles just aren't coming to me at the moment.

Sounds like we have our first list to choose from, the question is now though who's going to be the one to pick the book for this one?! LOL.

Can anyone sign up for this book club? I love to read and I'm always looking for something that I probably wouldn't pick myself so that I can find new things to love.

Sure can! Only is you bring me back a few pins from your DLP trip in '08! J/K. The more the merrier, that just means it'll be a while before we get around the group, which is fun all in itself.

Saw this and it caught my eye! I would love to join a book club on the DIS!
I am always reading or downloading audio books for the car. I have two kids so I may not be able to read as quickly (or as diligently) as I once did, but if it is available on iTunes I can usually listen while I drive during the day (I drive about 200 miles a day).

Looks like we got ourselves a yes on the book club from those who vocalized their interest publicly. (Those were some pretty big words for me! :) ) I'm going to send out PM's to those people and let them know what book we're going to start with, and what day to have it read by. What we might want to do, is just post our thoughts on the book of the month on a new thread each month, if that's okay with our MOD's, or we can start one thread, and just keep that one going. Who knows. The PM will be coming out soon though, so keep an eye out for it.

As long as we are making suggestions there was a book that caught my eye. Its called Water for the Elephants. Basically about a circus in the 30s and the various things that happen both dramatically and comically.

I would love to join, but even though I am an avid reader (and never without a book) I am a slow reader (especially with working two jobs).

I am currently reading the second novel in the "His Dark Material" series

Golden Compass
Subtle Knife
Amber Spyglass

Craig: You sent a bunch of us pms, but, could you post the same info in the thread? We seem to have had a few joining in the last few days, and I'd be willing to bet there's a lurker, or two, reading this.

I<3EvilQueen: Craig suggested about a month as reading time. Will that work? If not, we could try to agree on a second book now and you could skip the first but get started so that you'll be ready for the second. Thoughts?

The first book that I've recommended, is "The Eyre Affair" by Jasper Fforde, I've mentioned it's a pretty short book, It's no War and Peace that's for sure. I've also suggested that the first "meeting" should be on the 18th of Dec, just to make it easy to remember from month to month if we can to try to keep the "meeting" day on the same day each month. I don't know does that work for everyone? If you want to read along with us but I don't have it that you publicly agreed to it, if we keep posting publicly you can keep up. Let's see how this goes.

Hi everyone,

I don't know if you are all set up. And just want to go with your club. But just wanted to let you know that we have a book club on the DIS. We've been together since March or so. We are currently reading Water For Elephants We would love for you to join us. We are always looking for new members.

All pertinent information is always on post #1.

Best of luck with whatever you decide. But we would love more readers.

Lisa

That is so interesting, Lisa. I just ordered that book for my daughter's christmas gift. It had really good reviews -- I'll definitely be checking out your thread. :)

Thought I'd "stick" this thread just to keep it at the top for as long as you DIS'ers might want it around!

Have a great time with your book club!
