Dis 10th Anniversary mention - July 2016

It seems some folks want more, and I'm close to getting banned anyway, so here's some info:

The pit of balls at the bottom of the queue to space mountain will house the overflow from Pete's front yard.
Jackie will share some of her happy mushrooms with select guests.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will host a private dinner, catered by Tony's Town Square.
Figment will be closed, not because of the 10th anniversary, but due to lack of interest.
John will open up all his rental properties for podcast listeners.
Carousel of Progress and Buzz Lightyear will be rehabbed while at AK Avatar Land and Lights of whatever it's called will open on the 25th of July for the Dis spectacular.
Kevin will lead us on a special tour of Disney Dining, titled All You Can Stomach of this Crap.
I will be at the Tequila Cave or Rose & Crown for guest signings and a meet & greet (cost is one drink) from Thursday to Thursday. I will also bench press Gaston, in a purely manly way, Sunday in front of his tavern.
Gordon Ramsey will be reworking a special but unnamed restaurant at Disney Studios. Dreams Unlimited will provide one soft drink for members.
Dr. Steve will explain why it burns when I pee.
Craig will shave...that is all

I'm thinking seriously about coming to at least some of the events. As things stand now we are driving down from DC area (spending the night with NC friends on the way). We would arrive the evening of the 23rd so hopefully I won't miss too much. We are planning to rent a vacation home of some sort and stay for a month, so this will be the big kick-off. DH and DS13 (huge Connecting with Walt fan) will be on the trip but we will have to see about the events to see who's coming to what.

I'll admit here that while I'm excited, I'm a little nervous. I listen to rather than watch all the podcasts so am not part of chat. I'm also not active on the boards. Just worried that I'm going to be the only one coming who won't have any friends already... But, maybe I'm just thinking like the middle schoolers I spend all day with!!
I am arriving on the 24th, and like you I am nervous about going to an event where I don't know anybody.

I'll tell you the same thing I said before. You may come in not knowing anyone - at least on sight - but you'll leave with a bunch of new friends.

And you actually do "know" people from the boards. You won't recognize them but hopefully we'll do some type of name tags with our DISboard name so you can pick people out. I've got photos of myself posted (go back a couple of pages in this thread) so you can find me and say hello.

Thanks
I will do that. I might stalk you for a few minutes before I have the nerve to say hello though.

I'll be at WDW from the 12-26. I'm another lurker who might be shy to say hello....but might be nice to see fellow dis fans.

This is DH's main argument. He can't wrap his head around why I'd want to go...strictly for this reason. It doesn't bother me, but it certainly bugs him.

It isn't called a DIS "come and see people you already know".

It's called a DIS Meet!

A big part of the whole point is to meet fellow Disney fans. You're already a part of the virtual community. This is an opportunity to extend that into the real world.

TiggerTrigger, the other thing to explain to your DH is that you will get to meet and spend time with the team that gives us the podcasts that we all listen to every week. Think of it like going to a book signing or art exhibit or concert with a backstage pass where you will actually get to meet and get to know the artists and performers.

There is a magic potion for all of us shy people. This is no simple potion, and as lore tells us is not easy to come by. Here is the cannon of The Confidence Potion:

You must travel beneath a geodesic sphere known to some as The Giant Golfball. Pass the forrest of stone and amateur photographers, but beware of the song the sirens of Soarin sing to lure you from the path. Move on through the enchanted land of Future(world) until you find the mystical lake that catches fire every night. Along the way you will have to deal with mobs of wearing yellow/blue shirts, and monster strollers that can target you. I recommend you choose to follow an elf-guide (known as a Cast Member on their way to break) or someone on a steel horse (ECV).

Follow the path to the left until you reach an enormous pyramid. As you enter the great Mayan hall you will have to pass through a forrest of children wearing strange hats. Avoid the smell of bad refried beans and head to the west. There you will find the Cave of Awesomeness. You must wait at the mouth of the cave, usually 30 minutes to a half hour, before you can approach the master of etherial spirits. Continue to avoid the children in giant hats as you wait, and wait, and wait. Once summoned to enter you must avoid contact with the lushes that exit the cave in erratic paths Now approach the alter and simply ask Javier for a Classic or in some cases two. You can never obtain more than two at a time.

Now no magical potion comes easily, you must present a Band of Magic (or $10.45 plus tip). Nacho chips and salsa or advised at this point as well. Because this is a magical potion, you may want more. This is treacherous when you realize your child now must attend community college instead of Harvard (they weren't that smart anyway). The most difficult part of this trek still awaits you; eventually you will try to say "no mas" and leave the Cave of Awesomeness, but this is no easy task.

There you will find the Cave of Awesomeness.
I must confess that I have never partaken of this Cave of Awesomeness of which you speak (hangs my head in shame). I have sampled the offerings of the plaza opposite the great pyramid and have joined in the strange rituals performed at the feet of the tiki goddess from Polynesia but have yet to enter the Cave. Perhaps in July I will be deemed worthy of that honor.

Have never been to a DIS or MouseMeet, or anything like that, but used to go to big get-togethers (around 150 or more at main event, sometimes around 40 or so for events, especially meals during the week (try wrapping your head around making ADR's and details for 40 - was NOT easy!!) usually annually many years ago, did it approx. 10 times. Was always a little scary, but I can also espouse what everybody has said here - you always "know" peeps from the boards, and as time goes on, you "know" more and more peeps on the boards, and in "real life". The nervousness goes away very quickly, especially if you remember you always have the love of Disney in common, so start and go back to that if unsure. And in time, those peeps can - and possibly will - turn into lifelong friends. I have current, close friends that I met through my love of Disney (and going to the get-togethers, which we called Gatherings, as in Gatherings of Disney Friends) that I met on Prodigy (an online service, WAAAAY back when!) and then in WDW back in '92!!! And they are a treasured part of my life!!

EDIT: Remembered a saying I saw/herd I don't know where that all this makes me think of: Strangers (you can insert DIS'ers here) are friends you just haven't met yet! :)

I too am hoping to partake in both this cave of awesomeness and also the alter of the tiki goddes in Polynesia in August
