Which do you prefer? I've had Dish for several years now....not all that impressed. Upgrading to HD and thinking about switching to Directv. Opinions?

Ok, we've never personally had either, but our family has.

I voted for Directv, my in-laws have it, and it's great.
My mom had Dish, and it was horrible. It was out more than it was working. I'll never pay for it.

We have Dish - never had a problem with it and it's never been out. However, they will not give us a HD DVR without us buying it for $400. If you're a new customer, they will give it to you for free *rolls eyes*.

Our contract with them isn't up for another year but at the end of the year, I will see if they will give us one or we'll switch to DirecTV.

We love our DirecTV. We had Dish first and will NEVER go back. The customer service at Direct is awesome. We've moved twice with it and we had no problems either time. :thumbsup2

I've got a price from Directv (online). I chose 3 HD/SD receivers and 1 HD DVR. How many DVRs have others gotten?

Ours goes out regularly during rain storms. We've been in a drought this year so haven't really had to deal with it much but whenever there's a storm brewing.....:headache: I also HATE HATE HATE the Guide. It takes for friggin' EVER to load. We're talking minutes here at times. Also, the receiver will go out out of the blue. What's up with that?! It'll go out. Then come back on. Go out. Repeatedly. Then it'll come back on and stay on. It's like it's resetting itself or something. Weird. This doesn't happen too often but when it does....:headache: Just not impressed with Dish. We had Directv back in the day and I don't remember any issues. That was back when folks were programming the cards to get EVERYTHING. Yeah, guilty.:guilty: When that stopped working we switched. Don't remember why. Maybe we were mad 'cause they kept zapping our card?!:rotfl:

Directv is the only way to get Sunday Ticket, which the world revolves around, every fall in our house. (three DS's one DH... football is important, so they say.)

That's weird. We have DishNetwork and have been really happy. We've never have to wait for the guide to load, it's there as soon as we click on it. The only time our satellite has gone out is when we've had very heavy snow and that only happened a couple times and we just brushed it off. We've never had it go out due to a rain storm. That sucks that you have these problems. Have you contacted them?

Just keep watching their website (login to your account) for existing customer promotions. I got a dual tuner standard DVR for pretty cheap (I do not own it) not to long ago with free installation (they had to run another line from the dish) and before that I got a single tuner DVR for $80 (and I own it).

We love DirectTV. Neighbors have Dish, wish they'd gone with Direct.

DirectTV has great HD.

We just switched from cable. The deciding factor for DH was the internet was better with Dish. Well it was bundled with AT&T internet/phone, so that could just be what was available with Disn in our area. We've had it for several months now and haven't had any problems so far.

I've had both and there is no comparison between Dishnetwork and DirectTV. DirectTV is much better. Lucky it is so reliable because their customer service really stinks. I've only had to deal with them a couple of times

I have had both and Direct tv is better. Better reception, the boxes don't overheat all the time and go out and they have NFL sunday ticket which is a must in our household.

Dish Network is the weaker of the two options. They recently outlined how much money it would take to bring their system up to reasonable standards should DBS providers be required to provide local must-carry service, like cable companies are required to, and that exposed just how much worse-off Dish Network is versus DirecTV from the standpoint of technical infrastructure. By the same token, this does make it clear that Dish Network is much more likely to be acquired by another company soon, and that could spawn a rash of improvements over the next five years. Time will tell.

We have Dish and have had very few problems. The guide loads immediately and as previously mentioned, ours has only gone out a few times, only briefly.

The reason we went with Dish over Direct is that they have a dual HD DVR, so it is in the family room but it shares recording with another TV. So we can use either TV to record or view recorded shows, but you can be watching different shows (taped or live) on both TV's.

Maybe Direct has this now too?

In what way do you mean, happygirl?

One of the really good things about both Dish Network and DirecTV is that, unlike their competitors, it is pretty easy to go onto their websites and price out what you want. I suspect the answer to your question will depend greatly on which services you want and don't want.
