We want the room to room Tivo thing. We are moving and they said I get free upgrade since my Tivo isn't HD. They said it would cost a one time fee of $99 for the all room tivo.

Anybody get them to throw it in for free?

There was a man at Sams club over the weekebd trying to get new customers and we lstened to his spiel, he said all the rooms in the house would work with one DVR, and nFL sunday ticket would be free for a year, and he would trhow in all the movie channels for 3 months.

He said it would be free install, $36 activation fee, and a monthly payment of $68 a month for the first year.

Maybe if you said you heard that new customers were getting the TIVO thing for free it woudl work?

Good luck with it. DirectV does not treat its regular customers very well when it comes to upgrades.

We just switched back to Comcast after 2 years with DirecTV, and my husband HATED Comcast.....but he still liked them better than DirecTV, and their prices were better.

If you're already a DirecTv customer, you have to call their retentions department. I've found that they're far more able to be flexible with offers than regular sales representatives. but the magic words are that you're considering cancelling your service. I tend to tell them that I've checked out offers from other companies, and I don't think its fair for all the good offers to go to new customers only. More often, they agree with me, and after putting me on hold, give me what I was asking for.

Last fall, we got an HD tv so I called to inquire about service. I too was quoted the $99 all in package. I told them that I was no longer interested and that I'd keep my existing service....eventually I got my HD service installed free, with new DVR recievers, free lifetime HD. Just last week I called and got Showtime free for one year, a $20 off credit per month for 12 months and Stars for $5 per month (eligible for the $25 refund credit after 3 months).

So check out the other television service companies and what they're offering, check out the new customer packages that DirecTv is offering, and call retentions. If the rep won't give you the installation for free, ask them what the protocol is for cancelling your service. They'll counter with "what can we do to keep your business?". Just be prepared to ask for what you want, as they usually won't offer too many bonuses. Good luck!

I called to cancel Directv and they gave me a full 2 months for free.

I am calling again to cancel tomorrow, but this time I will probably cancel unless they offer me a killer deal.

:thumbsup2 Yep, tell them you called a couple months back and one of the reps told you that you could get a free upgrade (and instillation) if you went with HD. You would like to do that. They will tell you that any offer is time contingent. Ask her to work with you. They will make you pay for the unit but should give you a year free HD service. That will pay you back. Understand though...you own your tivo all you pay is the mirror fee. Once you get the new unit you will pay mirror and a dvr fee (i think). Here is what i did....I went from two series 2 tivos and 1 series 1 tivo to two HD Dvrs. they gave me one for free as i stated above and i bought the second off the web for the best price possible. Because i paid full price and have free lifetime dvr service from way back (well before Murdock) i only pay a mirror fee on each unit and nothing else. So you need to do some leg work and see what is better to pay a lot for each unit (in effect buy them - although you don't really own them in reality - they will need to be shipped back when you leave) or pay the rental fee. Your tivos are yours to keep and insist they are "owned" units but the new ones will be "leased". If you have good HD tvs like 50 inch and larger you will see a night and day improvement. The D* dvrs are pretty good, not as good as tivo but i highly doubt there will be another HD D*TiVo some day... The up side your existing wiring should be RG6 coax dual runs to your tivos and that is just fine for the HD units (quad core is not necessary -extra shielding in the coax). They will install a 5 sat dish and make sure you ask for a multiswitch (8 output) to be installed when you set up the initial deal. Make sure you have the multiswitch installed someplace you can get to it so you can add more tvs in the future w/o having to pay instillation charges. Do not let them insist that a phone connection is necessary, it is not unless you want to buy ppv with the remote. An Ethernet internet connection is necessary if you want to do on demand. The remotes that come with the DVR are RF remotes but you need to set them from IR to RF. You don't really need this unless you are putting the DVRs in a closet but it is nice not having to point the remote at the tv to make it work. good luck, make sure you get free instillation. They will complain saying the only hook up one line and so on... just ignore it when they get there and see all of existing wiring they will do what you want since most of it is already there. good luck. If you still have stuff on your old tivos remember to unhook the coax lines from the tivo before you remove it from your account. This way the unit thinks it is still active and you can watch what is still on the unit before finally putting it in a closet. I have a ton of series 2 tivos all over the place. I was getting to the point i was changing hard drives, power supplies, modem chips, tuners and so on to keep mine working.... I don't regret the change up to HD and except for BBC America (Top Gear) everything else i watch is in HD. So they have a great HD service.

When I called to cancel our service a few months ago, they offered me many things -- ultimately about $150 credit (worth about three months of service) with no strings attached. I still cancelled.

You should call and tell them they are not worth the $ and you must cancel. They will work with you.

That is what we got too, although it only covered 2 months of our service.

Curious why you didn't at least take the free months?

I had already given in to a lesser deal a few months before. For my family, I was looking for a way that we would view TV for fewer hours a week, but still see the programming we really enjoyed.

So ... I cancelled despite the good offer.

We have not missed the service with our Roku and Netflix (and HuluPlus).

Ok, I still would have taken the 3 free months. Were you not using it at all?

We actually love DTV with our DVRs but we need to cut the budget somewhere and this is one of those places. We were willing to keep it at $65 and even kept it at $85, but now that our bill is $105 we are done.

The lower package (family) really doesn't have a whole lot we watch. It has nothing DH watches.

Plus we were told the Family package is $29/mo. We would they need to purchase $10 for HD as it isn't included in the lower package. Then we would need to tack on $12 for two more receivers plus $6 for DVR service. That $29 service ends up costing over $60 with tax for not much more than we can get over the air. ARGH!
