How many Dis'ers here have bought direct and how many have bought on the secondary. I suppose there should a third class of blended point holders.

I have done both. I started resale, but a few direct, then bought more resale.

Did a direct 50 point add-on contract right before the 75 point minimum points were required for direct perks. But the rest of our points are resale.

Both for us - first 5 contracts resale - then rest direct because I wanted specific low numbers of points - like my last purchases - 33 at VGF and 54 at WLV - you just can’t find those odd numbers resale!

Bought both...about 1/2 resale and 1/2 direct. Am in the process of selling a large SSR contract bought resale 10 years ago, and will buy CCV direct because we love the WL so much.

Both. I bought a 30 point BLT contract when the minimum was 25 points.

I bought both ways, but have not bought a single point from Disney or otherwise since March 2011 when DVC adopted the first limitation on resale purchases, applicable to the Disney Collection. It was at the point that I determined that DVC was embarking on a path, likely not to end, to be the members' enemy rather than friend.

Both resale. Our SSR contract closed just a few months before the 2016 restrictions.

Those restrictions cured any desire I might have had to buy direct. Knowing that they were going to devalue our potential to resell if necessary, persuaded me that it was not in my best interest to ever pay retail prices.

Started with 3 direct contracts totaling 400 points, then added 2 resales totaling 456 points. And over the 20 years we've owned, not once have we banked points - instead, we are always borrowing, no matter how many we own :confused3

Just a couple of resales, but got very lucky stumbling on the resale market.

Both. When I started back in '93 there was no secondary market, then added more direct in '98, and then bought resale in '09.

Enemy? Resales are less expensive, correct? Get what you pay for sort of thing....Our purchases with Disney were all direct, because that was our decision after looking into it. Our decision to buy resale with Marriott has a lot of limitations, like we can only stay where we purchased without spending a lot more money (bought a legacy week as opposed to buying direct points), paying to belong to a trade company (II), and paying fees to go to other Marriott vacation resorts. We knew exactly what we were buying and are extremely happy with our decision, limitations or not.

Having a DVC timeshare in one resort or another, being able to trade into the 14 or not, is still having a DVC timeshare, giving you years of trips staying in the accommodations a buyer chose to buy in a place the buyer wants to visit repeatedly and at a significant savings over direct sales prices. I hear the arguments, but I don't completely understand the anger or bitterness. No one HAS to buy DVC or any other timeshare. Researching the product, knowing the difference between resale and direct purchases (not just the money saved) and making informed decisions gets people the product they willingly paid for.

I think Disney took a very long time to finally realize that resales at a significant discount shouldn't have the complete perks package that direct sales have. JMHO

Ehh. "Shouldn't" implies a value judgment in there, and I don't agree with that. Disney already profits once at initial sale of the DVC points, and current direct sales at anything other than CCV or Aulani are really 'direct resales,' and they're profiting a second time on those sales over their ROFR. Operating costs are covered by dues. When it comes to perks & benefits, Disney certainly doesn't offer them to initial buyers or 'direct resale' buyers charitably. If you buy an AP, or shop and dine at Disney, even if they give you a discount off those things you're still making them money. It's completely arbitrary to cut those perks off of secondary-market resale buyers but offer them to, say, someone buying 'direct' (but really still resale) OKW/SSR for $151/point.

They're a business that can choose to go for a cash grab if they so desire, but it's still a cash grab, not something that direct points buyers "should" have and peer-to-peer buyers "shouldn't."
