I'm digging through a lot of information and trying to make sense of the wealth of expertise here. I read somewhere (but now can't find it again) that buying resale then direct (compared to vice versa) allows you to combine contracts under same membership account (or something like that). Can anyone shed some light? Is the preferred order resale then direct? If the other way around, Disney would create more than one membership? I'm confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, resale then direct is the easier way to go. It is much harder to find a resale contract that has the same use year as your originally bought contract than it is to have Disney find an add-on for you. You could have two separate contracts, but it sounds like it take some extra work. If you buy a direct add-on from Disney, it shows up under your same login and you can combine the points from the two contracts very easily. They both exist under the same membership number.
A more important benefit of buying resale first is that you can add on just 25 points to an existing contract, but have to buy 50 directly from Disney if you are starting with them. The price difference between resale and direct, multiplied by that 25 point difference, makes it more financially prudent to start with resale.

Unless you'd be OK with separate master contracts, I'd almost always buy resale first. I'd always go resale first for small purchases such as 25-50 points.

When buying direct you have to add-on to any existing contract (same UY and same resort) to buy only 25 points. If you want a different UY or resort DVC will make you buy 50 points for a new master contract. We just went through it.
