Direcct TV - what happens AFTER the 2 year contract is up?

I'm getting ready to make a switch from cable to Direct TV. However, I was wondering about one thing.

For the first 2 years, you get some pretty good credits to your bill. After that 2 year contract is up, everything goes up to regular price...which is kind of high! :scared1:

After the 2 year contract is up, can you resign another 2 year contract for the cheaper rates? Also, if you resign for another contract, do they give you upgraded equipment or do you still keep using the old equipment?

Thanks. :)

Nothing happens.....you are free to leave and they can't stop you or charge you a termination fee.

You can call and ask about any new credits / equipment and the like, but they are under no obligation to give you but it never hurts to ask....and I think they are usually pretty good about giving you "something" to try and keep you around.

You go month to month after the 2 years are up. We have had them 5 years now and ever since our contract was up we have had the introductory price just by calling and requesting it.

Your best option is to call them and tell them you're going to switch if they don't offer a good enough deal. If you don't call, the system will automatically start increasing rates for whatever "sign up rate" you got. If you do call, you can often get a deal that is even better than their sign-up rate.

As an added note . . . I decided to pay the $5.99/mo for the service plan, and it has certainly paid off. We have had lots of odd weather over the last couple years, and we've had some minor issues - dish misaligned, plugs weakened, etc. They were all fixed under the plan.

We've had DirecTV for nine years and have never been on a contract, probably to our disadvantage, as our rates have steadily increased over this time.

Interestingly, Century Link (our phone company) came to our neighborhood this afternoon offering almost the same pkg we have with DTV for about half the cost. Only thing missing was regional sports networks (MASN, NESN, YES, etc,) a must-have for me. DD#1 offered to call DTV to see what kind of better rate she can negotiate for us. I'm willing to take a contract if the rate is right.

Unlike our experience with Comcast, our bill didn't go through the roof when the introductory period ended and we didn't have to call to beg for a better rate - when our contract ended DTV called us and offered our choice of several special rates in exchange for extending our service agreement for an extra year. We're in our 4th year with them now and have added some services (HD, Showtime during Dexter season) that bumped the cost up from our initial rate but it is still competitive with what they offer new subscribers and we're very happy with the service/pricing overall.
