Table service - Substitute dessert with a side salad or cup of soup or fruit plate.
Quick service - Sub dessert with any eligible snack (like a side of french fries).
Someone please correct me if I am wrong on this.
Since you mention appetizers I am guessing you are asking about table service restaurants. There were reports on new substitution options on third party sites, but the actual reports that people have been able to substitute at TS have been very limited. I have only read of one report that at The Wave the diners were able to sub a specific vegetable side dish (of the restaurant's choosing) for the dessert. It has been posted on third party sites that you could sub a side salad or cup of soup, but it looks like it will be at the discretion of the restaurant just what will be the options. By appetizer if you are asking about the appetizers on the menu, that will not be possible. One of the hard and fast rules of the dining plan is you cannot order an appetizer from the menu in place of dessert.
I just read a thread posted by someone who substituted soup or salad at CS restaurants. He said that many CM's are not aware that this can be done, but if asked nicely to try most will, and then the register will allow it.
He did not discuss TS substitutions that I remember.
We have a resi for dinner at BOG for dinner I'd much rather have a small cup of French onion soup than a dessert. Any luck with getting soup instead of a dessert there?
BOG is a TS at dinner and so far the reports have been that at TS restaurants the restaurant itself decides what will be offered as a substitute for the dessert. One person reported that at The Wave they were offered a veggie side dish and another poster upthread said they were usually offered a house salad.
