Dining with two toddlers! Reviews from July 14-20- Updated- Kona Cafe

Ok, the kids have eaten breakfast, so I think I'm good to go for a little while.

Captain Cook's - Lunch
You may be wondering how we ended up at Captain Cook's for lunch. I was wondering that, too. The answer, however, is simple. Iced tea. Raspberry iced tea, to be more specific. My sister drinks iced tea and lots of it. She is not a fan of the brewed tea and is pretty much stuck with the Nestea that you can buy in a bottle. Back in 2007 she discovered that Captain Cook's had Nestea raspberry tea. She drank a lot of it. Last September when we stayed at ASM, they had it on tap, too.
So after a long, hot morning at AK, we were waiting in line for a bus back to WL. And we were waiting. And waiting. And, well, you get the picture. As we continued to stand in line for our bus, a bus pulled in for the Contemporary and Poly. One of us said, let's take that bus! At least we'd be sitting in air-conditioning, right? So after disembarking at the Poly, we decided to go inside and check out the shops before catching the monorail to MK. After some shopping the kids kept saying they'd die if they didn't eat soon. We know that wasn't really going to happen, but we decided to stick to the Poly and eat at Captain Cook's. This way my sister could have her iced tea. Here's the bad news...Captain Cook's no longer has the raspberry iced tea. It's been replaced with Poweraide. Needless to say she was bummed, but we needed to feed ourselves and the kids.
Captain Cook's was kind of crowded, but using the touch screen ordering made things much easier. I chose a diet Coke, the Ceasar salad, and the apple struedel dessert. I believe the kids shared another grilled cheese with grapes and something else. We found a seat and waited for our buzzer to go off. It didn't take long at all for our food to be ready. The salad was good but nothing special. There was a lot of chicken in it, which I shared with both kids, as they love grilled chicken. The apple dessert was ok; it could have been a lot better. It needed some more sugar, cinnamon, maybe some good crumbles on the top...it was just lacking that extra *umph*.
I can tell you that my sister got one of the yellow cupcakes with white icing, and that looked delicious. She took the top off, turned it upside down, and made a cupcake sandwich. I'd never thought to eat a cupcake like that.
All in all Captain Cook's was ok. I blame my lack of excitement on poor food selection. My sister's sandwich looked very good. Chalk it up to another case of food envy. I do like the touch screen ordering system.

Next up, Kona Cafe for dinner!

You better believe I'm doing this with my next cupcake LOL

Kona Cafe - Dinner
I don't quite remember how we ended up at Kona for dinner. I think the kids had fallen asleep, so in an attempt to keep them from rioting, we let them sleep for a while. I believe we cancelled our ARD for Narcoossee and went to concierge at WL to see if anything was open for Kona. The CM who helped us was great, and we were able to get an opening for 8:20 P.M.
Again, everyone was in much better spirits after a nap, shower, and a clean change of clothes. We took the boat to MK and then boarded the monorail to the Poly. The check-in area was swarming with people who were waiting to be seated at Kona and Ohana, although I think the majority of people were waiting for Ohana. We were able to grab some seats outside the lounge and that's when my sister and I decided we were in need of a cocktail. It had been a long day, and the idea of relaxing with a cold drink was a good one. I ordered the blackberry mojito. I had never had any kind of mojito before, so this was something new for me. The drink was good - filled with fresh mint leaves and big, fat blackberries. I usually drink a margarita when I go out, but I favor Crown Royal whiskey and Seagrams ginger ale at home. The mojito was light and refreshing, and it did a good job of making me relax. In fact, because I'm pretty much a light-weight, I had a little buzz going.
Our buzzer went off not too long after we got our drinks, so we parked the strollers and headed into Kona. We had another booth/table, so Annabel sat with my sister and nephew, while Jimmy and I settled in on our chairs.
Our server was very nice; she was efficeint in refilling our drinks and checking back to see if we needed anything. Also, she was great with the kids.
We all ordered our drinks; the kids had apple juice, and my sister and I got a regular and diet Coke. Our server brought us a loaf of yummy bread with the macadamia butter. Like I said, I had a little buzz going, so the bread was a welcome addition to suck up some of the alcohol in my stomach.
My sister and I decided to share the crab cakes, and I ordered the NY strip (medium) minus the sauce. Jimmy and Annabel shared the grilled chicken and pasta, minus the sauce. Annabel and Jimmy also shared the chicken soup. She ate the chicken and carrots, while he ate the pasta.
The crabcakes were ok. I'm a bit of a crab cake snob, and I was expecting more lump crab meat. These seemed to me more of the shredded meat and too much bread filler for my taste. The flavor was good; it's just that I prefer as little bread as possible.
Our dinners arrived, and everyone dug in. My steak was good, but it could have been a little more tender. Maybe I should have asked for it medium rare? The sticky rice and broccolini were ok. I did ask for soy sauce for my rice. All in all, it was a good dinner.
The kids got the make-your-own-sundae, and I chose the Kilauea Torte. The torte was delicious. If you love chocolate, get this dessert. I think Annabel was the one to start to get antsy, so we settled up for the crab cakes and tip and headed out.
My sister never likes to leave cash on the table. Our server was nowhere to be found, so Kristin asked another server to see that our waitress got our bill and cash. I guess there was some kind of confusion because our room was charged for the crab cakes, which we paid for OOP. The charge was removed from our bill. We were also charged for a drink and bag of chips that was paid for using snack credits.
I really enjoyed Kona Cafe. I would definitely go back again. I think DH would like it, too. Our service was great, and the place lends itself well to kids because it's busy and noisy.

Next... lunch at Tutto Italia

Thanks for your reviews. I am going w/ 2 toddlers in September so appreciate the advice. I changed our Crystal Palace dinner reservations to an 8:00 breakfast after reading your review. Thanks!

Enjoying your reviews, Alisa.

I didn't notice the buttered pasta on the menu at CRT. I'm sure DD would have liked that better. Oh well. Live and learn I guess ;).

And I still need to get over to Beaches and Cream someday. It's going on "the list" for next trip.

Actually they usually offer the complimentary pasta to the under 3 set, that is why it is not on the children's menu. lissawynn's DD and DS swapped entrees. My kids did the same thing when we ate at CRT.

We did not like 1900 Park Fare food selection too, but we did enjoy the characters. Cinderella took my son (then 2) and danced, it was Priceless. Thanks for sharing and can't wait toread more
