Kona Cafe - Dinner
I don't quite remember how we ended up at Kona for dinner. I think the kids had fallen asleep, so in an attempt to keep them from rioting, we let them sleep for a while. I believe we cancelled our ARD for Narcoossee and went to concierge at WL to see if anything was open for Kona. The CM who helped us was great, and we were able to get an opening for 8:20 P.M.
Again, everyone was in much better spirits after a nap, shower, and a clean change of clothes. We took the boat to MK and then boarded the monorail to the Poly. The check-in area was swarming with people who were waiting to be seated at Kona and Ohana, although I think the majority of people were waiting for Ohana. We were able to grab some seats outside the lounge and that's when my sister and I decided we were in need of a cocktail. It had been a long day, and the idea of relaxing with a cold drink was a good one. I ordered the blackberry mojito. I had never had any kind of mojito before, so this was something new for me. The drink was good - filled with fresh mint leaves and big, fat blackberries. I usually drink a margarita when I go out, but I favor Crown Royal whiskey and Seagrams ginger ale at home. The mojito was light and refreshing, and it did a good job of making me relax. In fact, because I'm pretty much a light-weight, I had a little buzz going.
Our buzzer went off not too long after we got our drinks, so we parked the strollers and headed into Kona. We had another booth/table, so Annabel sat with my sister and nephew, while Jimmy and I settled in on our chairs.
Our server was very nice; she was efficeint in refilling our drinks and checking back to see if we needed anything. Also, she was great with the kids.
We all ordered our drinks; the kids had apple juice, and my sister and I got a regular and diet Coke. Our server brought us a loaf of yummy bread with the macadamia butter. Like I said, I had a little buzz going, so the bread was a welcome addition to suck up some of the alcohol in my stomach.
My sister and I decided to share the crab cakes, and I ordered the NY strip (medium) minus the sauce. Jimmy and Annabel shared the grilled chicken and pasta, minus the sauce. Annabel and Jimmy also shared the chicken soup. She ate the chicken and carrots, while he ate the pasta.
The crabcakes were ok. I'm a bit of a crab cake snob, and I was expecting more lump crab meat. These seemed to me more of the shredded meat and too much bread filler for my taste. The flavor was good; it's just that I prefer as little bread as possible.
Our dinners arrived, and everyone dug in. My steak was good, but it could have been a little more tender. Maybe I should have asked for it medium rare? The sticky rice and broccolini were ok. I did ask for soy sauce for my rice. All in all, it was a good dinner.
The kids got the make-your-own-sundae, and I chose the Kilauea Torte. The torte was delicious. If you love chocolate, get this dessert. I think Annabel was the one to start to get antsy, so we settled up for the crab cakes and tip and headed out.
My sister never likes to leave cash on the table. Our server was nowhere to be found, so Kristin asked another server to see that our waitress got our bill and cash. I guess there was some kind of confusion because our room was charged for the crab cakes, which we paid for OOP. The charge was removed from our bill. We were also charged for a drink and bag of chips that was paid for using snack credits.
I really enjoyed Kona Cafe. I would definitely go back again. I think DH would like it, too. Our service was great, and the place lends itself well to kids because it's busy and noisy.
Next... lunch at Tutto Italia
