Part 3 of our dining experience

Here is a list of places we ate in order of appearance and review. All are first time places for us.

Nine Dragons
Akershus
Trail’s End Buffet
Citrico’s

Tuesday – May 27 Nine Dragons

Didn’t expect to have lunch here. We took the Undiscovered Future World Tour in the morning and with the tour we got passes to fast track and 20% off of lunch at either Nine Dragons or Akershus. Since we had PSs for Norway that evening, we went to Nine Dragons.

We ordered the meal for two. It came with three full dishes (to share) and plenty of rice. The dishes were a type of pepper steak, a shrimp dish which was very tasty, and the third was a honey flavored chicken nugget dish which also was pretty good.

It was all very good but filling. I wasn’t sure we were going to make our Norway PS 4 hours later.

Akershus

We had reservations for 5:15. The restaurant was only about 25% full but we still had to wait about 10 minutes?!! As you all know, it is a buffet, and the buffet is cold. You order the hot entrees separately. My wife ordered the sausages, and I ordered the Soused Fresh Mackerel.

Even though they offer wine pairings, we just had a couple glasses of draft beer.

Do you know that they serve a dark draft beer now? It is NOT on the menu. It is called Aase (I think).

I don’t remember what all the cold food was. The peel and eat shrimp was good. The herring in tomato sauce was OK.

For dessert I ordered the Viking ship. It is chocolate mousse shaped like (what else) a Viking ship with chocolate sticks as oars. It was very good. My DW ordered something like a large gingerbread cookie which came with paints (food colorings) in chocolate icing “dishes”. It was on the children’s menu. You can “paint” the cookie. She obviously is a kid at heart.

Wednesday – May 28 Trails End Buffet

In search of pressed pennies, we went over to FW and had lunch at Trail end. It is a very good buffet, make our own pulled pork sandwiches, soft tacos. The chili was second best (next to my own LOL), just the right consistency, not too spicy (a few more green peppers maybe). The unlimited drinks and one for the road was a very nice touch.

Citrico’s

We had reservations for 7 and were seated promptly. Our menus had the wine selections for each food item and it also had the three wines for $25 special (Uh oh were we going to relive our Artist’s Point experience). We asked, and the waiter said you would get whatever wine was listed with the food item. OK great. And we got each wine when each course was presented . :bounce:

My DW ordered the Foie Gras Ravioli in Shiitake Mushroom jus as an appetizer. It came with an Argyle Pinot Noir wine. She ordered Asparagus Salad with Arugula, Frisee, and Westphalian Ham. It was paired with a Hugel Gentil Alsace wine. Her entrée was Basil-Crusted Rack of Lamb with Ragout of Spinach, white beans and Shiitakes. The wine was a merlot from Berringer.

I ordered the Gateau of Crab with sweet corn sauce as an appetizer. The wine was a Chardonnay from the Mondavi Private Selection, The salad was Citricos Salade Maison with Cabernet Vinaigrette. The wine pairing for this was a white wine called Evolution No. 9. The entrée was grilled swordfish with vegetalbe (I think this is supposed to be vegetable but this is the way it was spelled on the menu :)) pearl pasta, and red pepper coulis. The wine was a Meursault Louis Jadot.

As much as my novice pallet could tell, I would say the wines matched the food very well. I typically don’t like merlot, but it went quite well with my DW’s lamb (which was very good).

The deserts were to die for as they say. We ordered a couple of desserts which we saw on another table. One was a lemon meringue and the other was a chocolate. The presentations were fantastic. I don’t even know what they are called since we said we wanted what was served to the other table. Here are the picutres.

This was about as near a perfect dinning experience as you can have. We were even able to see some of the fireworks from MK. The waiter kept on mentioning the fireworks to the kids at the next table but I was skeptical. I couldn’t even see the castle. But they actually shoot off the fireworks about ¾ of a mile behind the castle which lined up pretty well with our view.

Wow- those desserts are a true work of art! Incredible! Thanks for sharing the pics.

Wow! I am adding Citrico's to our must do list for October! I really want to dine there!

i had crossed citrico's off our list for this trip, but now i want to add it back! :p

thanks for the reviews and pictures. :)

I wanna eat at Citricos too !! Those desserts look out of this world, thanks so much for posting the pictures and making me drool ;)

We had our first ever meal at WDW at Citricos and it is a must do every year. Glad you had such a wonderful time.

Thanks for the reviews. Glad to see that different beer at Norway. And Citrico's is always a favorite of mine. Was it cowded the evening you wen??

Great reviews. We ate at Citricos in 2000 with a 1 yr DS and 2 yr DD and we had an excellent time. The staff even went downstairs to the GF cafe to get blueberry yogurt for DS and made pancakes for DD!! They gave the kids crayons and told them to color on the linen tablecloth, they were washable. I cant say enough about this restaurant. We are going back this year and we will be eating here again!:smooth:

I'm glad you had a great time at Citricos, DH and I were there last July (after reading Uncleromulus' review!).

I think Uncleromulus is asking how crowded it was because often it is less than half full and Citricos might then be on the endangered species list...I hope not...good for us DISers to spread the word...it is excellent cuisine...

What a gorgeous presentation of those desserts! Did they taste as good as they look?

Unforturnately it wasn't crwded at all. Most if not all of the tables in the front of the restaurant were empty. Our table was in the back by the windows facing MK. About half those tables were empty.

A virtually empty Citrico's was about what I expected. Not sure if there is an real cure either. With that sort of attendance, they just can't survive.
It'll probably be something like Papette Bay--first the Hula dancer went, then the combo, then the menu went Chinese (with a price drop), then it went out of business and then came O'hana.
Maybe it's the location?? Flaglers didn't survive there either.

Wonderful pictures of the desserts at Citricos.

I hope it doesn't go the same route as Papeete Bay, Buena Vista Club or Tangaroa Terrace for that matter. It is a rather large restaurant so hopefully expectations on filling it are low. We dined there Christmas EVe and it was packed.
