Just returned from a week long vacation at the world where we tried to do all new restaurants for the most part. Here is Part One- Reviews of AKL restaurants (where we stayed)
Mara- AKL
We had several meals here. For the most part I would say the food was pretty decent. I can't compare it to other food courts as this was our first stay on property. We didn't take pictures here but I can tell you what we had and this wasn't all in one day!
Breakfast Wrap - consisted of fluffy eggs, bacon, cheese, and wrap, pretty darn good!
Crossiants- also pretty darn good
Variety of muffins- DH liked them!
Tandoori Chicken Pizza- DH said it was just ok
African Stew- DH really enjoyed this
Grilled Chicken Sandwich- pretty dry
Cheeseburger and fries- pretty good
Chicken Fingers and Fries-pretty good, kind of dry
African House Salad- just ok
Cheesecake- just ok
Marshmellow kabobs- just ok
Boma- AKL
This place has a large variety of food. I probably wouldn't suggest it if you are not adventurous to new things and different spices and flavors. We enjoyed it overall. Not huge fans of buffets but this was good. Had breakfast and dinner here. Breakfast has more variety for less adventurous eaters. The service was just okay here, nothing spectacular.
Breakfast- again sorry no pics - Just a few things we remember...
pap- I loved this, but I love cream of farina.
Bobotie (corn beef, eggs, cream, potato and onion) - just ok, kind of salty
meat pizza- bland and dry
Sausage and biscuit casserole- very tasty with unique spices
Dinner
pretty darn good. Tried a variety of things.
This is the chips and dips. There was a sundried tomato one and olive one.
The next 2 pics are kind of un-identifiable! Here's some of what we had though:
Watermelon rind salad- interesting but good
pap and tomatoes- yum!
fufu (sweet potato concoction)- pretty good
flank steaks - very good
zebra domes- pretty good
banana bread- very good
Jiko- AKL
We had a not so great experience here unfortunately. We may or may not go back in the future. First thing that happened was that it was very crowded at the check in desk and we couldn't tell who was waiting to check in and who was just waiting to be seated. I asked a very dressed up couple (man in suit, woman in slinky black dress and high heels) if they were in line. The woman looked me up and down she said no in a huff as in disgusted in what I was wearing. That was the first bad sign. Believe me, I was more dressed up than most people here in jeans, sweats, and sneaks. I had on nice capris, a short sleeve shirt, and black flats.
Our reservation was at 8:30 we got there at 8:15. I had never been there and saw the first two seating areas (the enclosed room with no windows and the bar area off to the right when you walk in). I asked to please be seated in the main area and was told no problem. Twenty minutes later our buzzer goes off and we are led to the small enclosed room. I said I'm sorry I really would like to sit in the main area as requested. He said ok, let's check. They say 20 minutes more. I agreed reluctantly. So about 10 minutes later they seat us. They seemed very annoyed with us. We get to our table and are sitting there for 15 minutes and finally a waiter very nervously comes over and says has Mike been to our table yet? I said no one has. He gets very flustered and says ok, I'll be your waiter. Based on the service I would not go back, but because the food was so good, I might.
We had:
Taste of Africa - Kalamata Olive Hummus, Malayan Spinach Lentil dip, Moroccan Chermoula, with Pappadam, whole wheat lavosh, and flaxseed Naan bread- Very good
Wood-Grilled Filet Mignon - with macaroni and cheese and red wine sauce - Filet was just okay (Le Cellier was 1000x better that review to come later). mac and cheese was not fully cooked through and kind of bland
Tamarind Braised Beef Short Ribs with Idaho and Sweet Potato Gratin, and Tamarind-Onion-Garlic Sauce- DH really enjoyed this. Ribs fell off the bones and the Potato Grating was wonderful
They also served a bread with sweet butter with dinner which was a nice accompanient. No room for dessert!
Pretty good food, mediocre service.
Stay tuned for more reviews!!
