Dining Plan / Split Stay / Online Check In

I have a split stay coming up where I am on the dining plan at the second resort. I know that with Online Check In a dining plan is active without having to visit the resort for check in. Do I need to check out of the first resort before the dining plan becomes active? (I'd like to use the dining plan on the morning of check in day at the second resort). Also, can I pick up the refillable mug at the first resort on check out day.
