We are doing free dining in August, and obviously my 13 year old will be on the adult menu. I have looked at a few places and have seen appetizers that she would love for dinner, but not on the dinner menu. Can she choose an appetizer as a meal?? And still use the plan credits? Honestly, I don't see what it would matter to disney, and she would be happy, but didn't know if this was an option for her.

I don't know if this would be acceptable or not, I do know that they will not substitute an app. for dessert.......so I am asuming that they wouldn't sub it for the meal either........(just gathering this from what I have read on other posts.....they are saying that Disney has become very strict with the dining plan)

I can see not substitituing dessert for an appetizer. There is usually a price difference (app more), but an app is generally cheaper than the dinner entree. I know I have seen that they can get the kids menu with the adult credit, but she is a little old for the kids menu. Some of the menus have salads on them that she would like as an entree (like chicken caesar salads and such). It would certainly make planning easier :)

you might luck out and some one will let you but I would guess more times than not the answer will be no. Why not pay OOP for her to have a drink and a app, then save the TS for you for another meal. This may allow you to add another TS onto your ressies.

Honestly, didn't know I could do that. I assumed 1 person used a meal, everyone uses a meal.

Yep, since DD is 13 and considered an adult you can use those credits for any adult in your party and just pay OOP for your DD. I know my DD14 is still very much a child at heart when it comes to dinning...One meal (dont remember where) we asked the server if they could do a kids meal for her even though she was past the age limit...they were fine with it and brought her out adult size portions...so that may be something to ask about too.

If you are on the basic plan, you must pay extra for appetizers.

If you wish to order an appetizer as your entree, ask at the restaurant if they will permit this.

You will not be permitted to substitute an appetizer for dessert.

As posted above, since the 13 year old is using adult credits, it's possible to pay for some of her meals and retain the credits for use by another adult.

My DS was 13 when we went to Disney last September, he'll be 14 when we go this September and not much has changed. I can probably count the number of foods he eats on my fingers. I think his best meal of the trip was either the macaroni and cheese at Sunshine Seasons Food Court or the macaroni and cheese (and possibly the mashed potatoes) at Liberty Tree Tavern. My DH and I pretty much use up all of the TS credits and either get him something from CS or use snack credits or OOP for McDonald's fries and such. He hasn't starved yet and his doctor says he's healthy so who am I to argue.

I have no interest in substituting a dessert for an app...just wondering if an app can be used as a meal, and only for my 13 yo. Some of the appetizers on the menus are things that are considered dinners around here.

My DD12 will probably want to do the same thing at one of our meals. I think they will allow an appetizer as an entree. We certainly intend to ask.
