Dining Plan NOT Allowed

Something to keep in mind when planning your trip.

You CANNOT get the Disney Dining Plan if you are staying MORE than 10 days.

You can try this at the Disney website and it will tell you that you must make your reservation for a maximum for 10 days to get the dining plan.

We are staying 13 days so are not eligible for it. Seems Disney thinks negatively of people who would dare spend more than 10 days at their resorts or parks giving Disney their hard earned money.

Either that or they figure if you can afford more than a 10 day stay, you must be rich, so they are going to sock it to you by making you pay full price for the food. We aren't rich and have been saving for this trip since 2000. This is only our second time going and can't afford to go every year for even a few days so we just save up and do a longer stay every five years.

I can see Disney limiting the dining plan for 10 days but why not do that for people staying more than 10 days? They could just give you 10 days of credits to use anytime during your stay or even let you have 10 days on the plan but require it to be used the first 10 days then make you pay full price for the rest of your stay. I think that is fair. I even would like to see Disney let the guest chose the number of days they want the plan regardless of the number of says they are staying. For example, you are staying 7 days but only want the Disney Dining plan for 4 of those days. In our case we are going to Universal for 2 days so won't need the plan on those days, so 10 days dining out of 13 days would be perfect.

As it stands now, we would have to split our reservation up but since part of our stay is the week of Dec. 20, the room rates go up $50 a day if your reservation doesn't start before Dec 20.

We are arriving on Dec 16. If we made a 3 day reservation for our first 3 days, Dec 16-18, we would be without park passes for these first 3 days as it would be foolish to spend $513 (for 3 people) for a 3 day pass and then $624 for a 10 pass when we are only going to use 10 days total at the parks (a 10 day pass would be required since our second reservation would be for 10 days and the park passes and dining plan days must match your reservation).

We wanted to go to Disney parks the first few days, then a couple days at Universal as a break from Disney, and then back to Disney rather than be forced to go to Universal the first 2 days and then Disney the rest of the time, although that is an option I guess.

We could make a 10 day reservation first and then a 3 day but as I mentioned previously, since the 3 day reservation would begin after Dec. 20 the room rates go up $50 a night. We already paid $87 for our original reservation so would probably lose that in order to cancel it and rebook two new reservations. When I add the loss of the $87 and the extra $50 a night I start to wonder if the plan is worth it. We looked at the restaurant menus and I don't know if we would spend enough with the addition costs involved to break even. Some of the menu items sound gross, for example, a Shrimp Cocktail (Yum) with Lip Mussels (Yuk!). Just my opion of course but we found many restaurants where their lunch menu had items we would want while their dinner menu did not so we would be doing more lunches which are cheaper, than dinners.

Add to that the stress of being forced to do sit downs and order food we don't like in order to break even and the plan becomes even less desirable. Last time we were at WDW we rarely did a table sitdown meal but that may have been because of the cost. Maybe with the plan we would do more sitdown meals. Then again the week before Christmas is the busiest time of year so we may want to skip sitdown meals and use the time saved to tour the parks.

Bottom line is if your reservation if for more than 10 days, you can't get the dining plan. If it is 10 days or less, it is a great deal.

If they gave us a ten day dining plan to be used anytime during the 13 day stay or even just the first 10 days, we would go for it.

My wife said she thought she saw something on the Disney website regarding 20% off meals for $75 bit can't find it now. If she does, find it that might be a better option as we would only have to spend around $400 for meals for 3 people in 13 days to make the $75 back.
With the cost of food we would make that back in much less than that.

If you call Disney instead of booking online they will allow you to get the dining plan for 10 of your 13 days.

(a 10 day pass would be required since our second reservation would be for 10 days and the park passes and dining plan days must match your reservation).

But that's not true! You can get the room for 10 days and dining plan for 10 days and just ONE day (per person) on the park passes. I know- I did it the last time we did the dining plan- and I'm doing it again on our next trip (first time we paid for dining plan, this time it's during the free dining plan time). Both times we were staying more than one day and only got ONE day ticket for each of us... you only have to have one day tickets per person (atleast) in order for the room/tickets to be considered a "package" and therefore you can then get the dining plan!

But

This sounds like the dining plan isn't really for you anyway.... ?

It sounds like you may be better off getting an AP and getting the DDE card where you save 20% off you meals.

I think you would be better calling Disney for something like this instead of doing it online. I bet you the CM could work it out somehow. Also, there are so many wonderful appetizers to choose from, I bet you could find something you love at every restaurant!

You can definately get the dining plan for more than 10 days if you use two seperate reservations.

We are staying for 14 nights on our upcoming trip - we have a reservation for 10 nights (we had to buy only a one day park ticket for each of us - which we are puttting towards the cost of our Annual Passes) and then a reservation for 4 nights ( we had to buy another one day ticket each and we are saving that one for a future trip, perhaps even towards our September 2006 Annual Pass!!).

So you can do it - you need to look again and see if the 'saving' on food will work for you - it was easier for us, with this being during the free dining. Even if we had been paying, I believe it would have worked for us, as the only extra cost we had was one one day ticket each - as the first could be used towards the AP cost we were spending anyway.

Good luck with you planning,
Claire

If you call Disney they should be able to do it for you. If they can not for some reason you can still do it.

Make your first ressie for the 3 nights, dining, and include your 10 day pass (it will expire 14 days after the first day of use). Second ressie, make for the rest of the stay but only include a 1 day pass...that is all that is necessary to do a package.

Good luck!

Just be careful with the second set of 1 day passes....unless you paid for the no expiration option (which is almost doubles the cost of a 1 day ticket) they will expire 14 days from the day you first check in....just don't want you to be disapointed come September!!

To the OP I have a couple of suggestions....first would be to consider staying at one of the Universal hotels for the couple of days you plan to be there....they are very nice hotels and getting Front of the Line Access when you stay there is better than having fast passes for everything!! Plus that would break up your Disney trip a little....I would do Universal for the first couple of days and then move to Disney. If you really want the dining plan for the 10 days you are at Disney it would make the most sense to do it that way....you would not be wasting dining days while you were at Universal and you would only have to move hotels one time, plus you could have the experience of staying at Universal and get FOTL.

If you really want all 13 days on the dining plan you can get it without splitting your reservation....you just have to call. They will be happy to book it for you, it just can't be done on line. The advantage there would be you wouldn't have to move at all and you could do Universal whenever you wanted, but I have to tell you....doing Universal over the Xmas holidays without FOTL access would be incredibly slow and painful IMHO.

If you feel you would have to eat things you don't want just to break even on the dining plan it really isn't for you at all is it?? Why in the world would you want to do it for 13 days??? Just eat what you want and pay as you go....the DDE card might be the best plan for you....just look at menus, run the prices and do the math....over 2 weeks I think the DDE would easily pay for itself...and an AP is not much/anymore than a 10 day park pass if you have hopping and options added.

Actually, they don't expire until 14 days after you first USE them. With a 1-day pass, this wouldn't be a huge problem since you can't save the one day after you've used it, right? :)
As long as you don't use the passes, they won't expire. You don't need the no-expiration option.

I totally agree. With an Annual Pass, you could get the Disney Dining Experience card for $50, and it would pay for itself after you've spent $250 on qualified dining. The DDE is good at many restaurants, and there are no restrictions on what you can get at those restaurants, including alcoholic beverages.

Given the length of your stay, the AP should be a good value for you. Plus, you would then qualify for an AP rate on your room, rather than paying the rack rate you'd have to pay to get the dining plan.

If I were you, I'd definitely explore this option.

Happy planning! :)

MY wife and I have the Dining plan booked for 13 nights in November - would have had it for 17 but switching from Poly to GF Concierge so couldnt get the mealplan without buyning more park tickets (already got 21 day ticket).

I just wanted to agree that your park days and dining days don't have to be the same in number. We are there for 10 nights in December, so we have 10 nights on the dining plan - but only 5 day Park Hopper. You can pick any number of ticket days on the Magic Your Way Plan. We're going to be doing lots of resort touring, Chirstmas shopping at Downtown Disney, etc. so we went with less park days for this trip.

More to the point, you CAN'T add the non-expiry option to a one-day pass - so it's impossible for it to expire!

True.

But for extra insurance, you can request a voucher for the ticket instead of having it applied to your room card. That way you can't accidentally lose it, and it won't be forever attached to your room key. When it is applied to your room key, I've been told you just keep that key (even if you use it a year from now), which just seems a bit scary to me (one never knows what can happen). If you have a hard voucher you will be safer, IMHO.

Thank you for all your tips, corrections, and suggestions. I will give Disney a call and try to get the 10 day dining plan for the 13 days. Anyone know if this can be used for any of the 13 days or just the first 10? You all are great and I thank you again for your input!

One last thing. I stumbled on the food pictures thread before coming here. All I can say is wow! Now all I want to do is eat at WDW. :sunny:

The plan will be valid until midnight of the day you "check out" on the first reservation.
