Hi,
I need some info about dining at FW, but first I need to vent a little, so bear with me...
I booked a trip for my in-laws during free dining. I originally booked one room for them at Coronado Springs resort (they are 3 adults, one child and one infant). I advised them that it could be a little tight in the room, but they were not concerned. Then about a week ago my MIL called and said she had decided that they should have 2 rooms for more space and 2 bathrooms! Of course, by that time there was no availability left at Coronado Springs. In fact, the only resort they were offering with free dining was FW (cabins). After looking at the cost of 2 cabins :scared1:, we decided that they could all fit in one. Only one bathroom, but more space and more privacy. They also liked the idea of FW. Okay, great, switched their ressie over without a problem.
Now I am realizing that there is really nowhere at FW to use the dining plan! Or rather, there are TS options, but I have already booked all of their TS's in or near the parks. I can't believe there is no CS option at all! Some of their TS's are for breakfast or lunch, and I had figured with a baby there is no predicting how long they will last at the parks on any given day. So in that case they could always have dinner back at the resort with their CS credit. Well, anywhere but FW! I am so upset and feel horrible that I didn't know this before I switched them over. I am stressing big time and it's not even my vacation!
So please, someone tell me that they can use their CS or even snack credits SOMEWHERE at the fort! Anywhere? :confused3
On a related issue, I am also stressing that they will never make any of the ADRs I already made them at the parks, because they will never figure out the transportation system and it will take them forever to get TO the parks!
I would like to think that I'm worrying needlessly, but somehow I don't think I am. Please help! Any advice?????

-Thanks

OK, just breathe!!

Yes, you are correct, there is no counter service at Ft. Wilderness.

However, there is wonderful counter service at the Contemporary and the Wilderness Lodge which is a short boat ride away.

All they have to really remember is from their cabin to go to MK, or the boats, they need to take the Purple Settlement bus.

To go to any other park, they need to take the Purple Outpost bus.

To get back to their cabin once they get to Fort Wilderness, take the Purple bus.

Only TS at the Fort, best bet hop a boat to the WL or hop a boat to the CR eat there or take the monorail to PR or GFR for CS meals.

Sorry, there really is no CS at FW. However WL is a quick boat trip away and a good place for CS. As for as making any ADR's once again a short boat ride can have you at either CR to catch the monorail or MK to grab a bus. Don't forget that the cabins have a full kitchen and while you won't be cooking meals they can still be great to keep snacks cold or reheat something for the kiddies.

Someone may need to correct me but, i think we used a CS credit at the snack shack at Meadows Pool. Altough it was not always open. I think the choice was very limited a grilled chicken salad or sandwich?

As mentioned the WL, CR and MK are only a boat ride away and with a quick additional monorail you have the PR and GF. If they have a car POR is really close. You have to remember that FW is geared towards campers and the cabins have full cooking facilities so the restaurant options at FW are more limited than the resorts w/o any cooking/refer facilities.

Can you use a CS credit for takeout? Just curious.

If you want to get the most out of your CS credits try The Pepper Market at the CSR.

although there is no CS at the Fort, we found that they were very accomodating with us using snack credits at the shop by the meadows pool. We were able to buy bread, milk, eggs, bacon, pastries etc with snack credits. They allowed anything under $4 before tax.

hmmmm, I got to try that.

Thanks for all the replies. ;) My in laws and the little ones are really excited about the "camping" theme, and I myself have always thought FW looked great. I just see in retrospect that it's not the best resort choice for the free dining period. Oh, well. What's done is done.
I'm glad to hear that they can at least use snack credits at the the Meadows Trading Post, I will tell them to stock up their room and refrigerator and hopefully that will help. Is there a list anywhere of snack items at FW? Thanks again!

Take a look at this sticky on the Dining Plan forum. You'll have to scroll til you find what you want, but it is an amazing resource of confirmed snacks on the plan, organized by park and resort.

The other thing you can do is, on the way to the MK, when the boat stops at WL, hop off, grab breakie or a few snacks to go at Roaring Forks (essentially just inside WL the top of the path to the dock), and hop onto the next boat and continue your day. Or, on the way back, do the same to grab snacks or drinks for at the cabin. As well, if you are heading back mid-day for a break at the cabin, you could look into how portable a CS meal, at MK for instance, would be to take back and enjoy (salads, wraps, and sandwiches)

As you have the benefit of a frig (and assuming a freezer) in the cabin, you can keep things for the next day and carry them into the park. e.g. freezing extra water bottles, etc. Many counter service meals have a desert (often with a lid) that we didn't always eat right away. I kept a small lunch type bag with a frozen water bottle in my backpack, and I would put the extra grapes and such in there for later in the day for the kids.

With a bit of research and out of the box thinking, you can probably make it work, even though there isn't CS at FW.

Hello, OP here.
I am resurrecting this thread because I have been reading about how FW is now listed under the "Moderate" resort category. Well, I went to the Disney website to check it out, and I noticed that it is now listed as having "Quick service restaurant(s)". Another place it is listed as having both Food Court/Snack Bars and Table Service. Can it be that they have made one of the restaurants, (Trail's End or Crockett's Tavern maybe) a Counter Service ? Oh, I will be in heaven if this is true! Does anyone know?

Bumping for ya cause that is a good question. Although you gotta admit a boat ride for a CS sounds like a fun adventure! We are looking forward to exploring! :goodvibes

Thanks. Yes, I personally wouldn't worry about taking a boat ride for dinner or breakfast, I am just concerned that it might be a bit much with a 5 yr old and a just-2 yr old in a stroller.

Here is the link to the DDP plan it still says only table service at The Fort.

Thank you, also. Yes, I looked at that and it hasn't been changed. However on the Disney website it is listed differently. I have been trying to find a link on the website to email someone for an official answer. Does anyone know the # I could call to find out? I hesitate to call the regular WDW dining #, as we all know how informed some of them are. ;)

My understanding is that the renaming of FW cabins to a mod was a cosmetic change only. There are still no CS at FW and TE is still a TS. Sorry.
