Can anyone give me info about the dining option at DL? I read it on the DL website, but it looks like it is way different than the WDW dining plan. Is it just for character meals?
The dining plan at DL is basically just a way to prepay for your food. You are buying vouchers that you then use to buy food instead of money. The only thing that it saves you money on is character dining, and then only in high season (I believe).
The major downside of the vouchers is that they don't give you change. So if you use one of the $5 snack vouchers and only buy $4.50 of something, you've lost out on 50 cents.
The vast majority of folks on here (myself included) will tell you to skip the dining plan at Disneyland. You will NOT save money by doing the dining plan. In fact, you likely will lose money since you won't get change back.
Thanks for your help everyone. I was thinking of making a quick detour down to Disneyland for the Halloween party since the airfare from Seattle is so cheap, but I'm a little scared and everything seems very different.

You should go! We just jumped on the cheap Seattle airfare via Virgin America. Disneyland is fantastic! I'm sure DW is great, too, but we've never been there. We love Disneyland. I was intimidated when planning our first trip, but the moment we started walking down Main Street, all that intimidation fell away.
