Dining plan and DDE question

We're using the dining plan in September, but we're planning to pay for the child meals separately so we can save up for more table service meals. When we pay for the child meals separately, can we use our DDE card to get the discount on those? I assume we would mention it at the beginning of the meal to give the server a heads-up?

We plan on doing the same thing in AUgust and I've read some posts that this is okay--just tell the server at the beginning.
