I don't use the DDP and probably never will. But I'm l trying to understand how folks will determine the tip. Will it be figured as a % of the plan cost (say 20% of $37.99 at each TS meal) or will it be figured on the "cost" of what you actually order at each TS restaurant each time you eat?
My guess is that WDW will issue a receipt for the full price of the meal with a zero balance. They'll suggest that you tip based on the price of the meal, not the price of the meal plan. That's what most restaurants on any sort of promotional plan do. And people will tip from there.
That's what I thought--
I see some posters, while trying to calculate exactly how much these new plans will actually cost, figuring tips on the plan costs -- before they have any idea what they will order.
For parties of six or more (DDP or not), it will be simple. You will receive a bill for 18% of the menu price, and you'll be expected to pay it.
For parties of less than six, I'm not sure. At one point, there was discussion that they might present you with a calculation of what an 18% tip would be, a 20% tip would be, etc. I'm not sure if they are really going to do that, and if so, HOW they would do that...but it's been discussed here.
If they give you a "helpful calculation" I'm sure the diner responses would range from gratitude for not having to do the math to outrage at being presented with a "bill" for a suggested tip.
Frankly, I wish Disney would just add 15-18% to every check and be done with it. That's commonly done in resort destinations, and even in many restaurants which are not resort venues.

I would expect that the Disers trying to calculate the plans cost effectiveness (and therefore their proposed tips) are looking at the internet posted menus, guessing what they are most likely to order, and calculating the tip based on that.
I know for myself, when I view the menus online, I have a pretty good idea of what I, my father and my mother will order (and 99% of the time, I'm right on).
And for those with children, it's especially easy since the kids meals are mostly all the same cost.
Could be.
I have a hard enough time deciding what restaurants we'll go to 180 days from now--not to mention looking at a menu that far out and deciding what we'll eat

But thats not how a company makes money. Disney has to keep trimming everything down, cutting back any positive aspects for cast members, while always raising the prices. The CEOs live like kings, and the avera cast member is borderline poor while working 40 hours a week. Walt would be real proud.
