Diners, Drive-ins and Dives

My husband and I ate at Al's Breakfast in Minneapolis, MN. We had a horrible experience. Rude wait staff (and not rude like Dick's Last Resort or WCC where it is part of the restaurants charm/shtick), bad service, expensive, dirty, and below average food. It very much seemed that if you were not a regular then you better anticipate being treated as a second class customer.

Since that experience I have been very hesitant to try any other restaurant featured on Diner, Drive-In's and Dives.

Awww. That stinks!!

You should try Dariette Drive In in St. Paul. It was on DDD. We live by there...my parents grew up going there. The food is fantastic, the staff is amazing, and it's just a nice summer place to visit!

We loved The Shed BBQ in Ocean Springs, MS, it is definately a dive but it has the best BBQ - that one is hands down our favorite.

We did not like the Blow Fly Inn in Gulfport, MS - I'm not sure if we just hit it on a bad day but it was bad:sick: and we won't go back.

The Shed was closed for renovation when we passed through...

we did eat at the Blow Fly Inn...it was good, but was nothing spectacular. Nice view though...

We have a Cattlemen's here, I wonder if it's the same. I don't know, ours is a chain type steak place, really good but not really something that might be on DDD. :)

I don't think the Cattleman's in Oklahoma is a chain. They're celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, it's in Stockyard City in Oklahoma City. Here's the link about the history of the restaurant.
http://www.cattlemensrestaurant.com/history (not sure if I posted that correctly). If you're every in Oklahoma it's definitely a place to visit. :thumbsup2

We ate at the 4Kegs in vegas last time we were there. Definitely a dive, but the wings and stromboli were worth the drive. Very rough looking place from the outside but the food was great.

Just last night!! We went to The BBQ Shack in Paola Kansas, just south of Kansas City. They have chicken wings that they smoke first, then fry!!! OMG sooo good! Luckily they are just a little too far away for me to go too much, that was only our second trip in more than a year. Otherwise I would be in serious trouble. popcorn::

Is this the Squeeze In you are referring to? I think the original is in Truckee and now there is one in Sac and Reno. Personally, I have eaten at the one in Truckee several years ago really liked it but the one in Reno is blah and IMO way over priced.

There have only been 4 Squeeze Inns, the original one in Sacramento which opened 30 years ago, and moved this year because the location was not ADA complaint (duh, that's why they called it the Squeeze Inn), one in Galt, and one that just opened in Roseville.
Also been to Jamies in Sacramento, right across the street from where I work.
Great too.

Living in NJ, we are the diner capital of the world. But we love DDD.

We've been to The Brownstone Diner in Jersey City, the Jefferson Diner in Jefferson, NJ, the Americana Diner in East Windsor, NJ.

We've also gone to the Country Pancake House in Ridgewood, NJ, which was on the Travel Channel's Pig out show, and Jimmy Buff's in East Hanover and Rutt's Hutt in Clifton, NJ (on Hot Dog Paradise).

I'd love to hit some of the bbq places he tries, and there are a few in CA that I'd love to hit next time I go out to visit family.

Hillbilly Hotdogs near Huntington, WV.....get your hot dog with any topping you can imagine, and sit inside an old school bus to eat it......

Yep - Wallace's Station in Midway, KY. It's been one of my favorite places to eat for years. The food and atmosphere are incredible - it's just down the road from where Seattle Slew lived most of his life (until he died a few years ago). Gorgeous drive out there. If you go, sit out back under the trees (the Fall is the best time!).

i've eaten at the beacon drive in in my hometown of spartanburg, sc. i wouldn't ever eat there again, but that's just because i don't eat food like that anymore. but it is definitely like no place else and for what it is, is very good.

I live very close to Scully's Tavern. They were a bar featured for their Escargot and for their Dolphin Sandwich.

It is pretty much the regular Friday night hangout for DH and I. The bartenders all know us by name. They have a lot of good food besides the stuff featured. The tomato bisque, when available, is great. Awesome steak tip sandwich, conch fritters, and ribs. Twice we have run into couples who have made it their goal to go to every DD&D restaurant. They just drove around the country going to all the places!

Not yet, but we want to! Mom and I have thought about trying to do a road trip and stopping at as many as we can!

Does anyone know if there is a list somewhere? I know he has the cookbooks, but that would not be the best way to do it.

There are two Triple-D books and Googling will turn up a US map with all the locations.

I've been to Mulberry's in Lackawanna (Buffalo) NY before it was on the show. It is NOT a dive. It's actually a really nice place to eat, although the neighborhood surrounding it is a little scary. The meatballs are enormous- bigger than baseballs! He makes everything from scratch. The pasta, the marinara, even the mozzarella... oh MY is it to die for. Best Italian food around, and we have a lot of good Italian in Buffalo.

We live near the White Manna in Hackensack NJ and my family loves their burgers.... The tiny, old diner style building is adorable and the wait is usually out the door... ( of course there are only about 15 counter stools in the place.. it is tiny!)

Oh yes! In fact one place where I live ( sacramento ) he was told to try the squeeze, we had already eaten there. He loved it. There are a few places we have tried as well and they were really good. Jo

Ive also been to the squeeze inn... they moved locations now and we were there a guy was tackling the largest ever squeeze inn burger we stayed the full 2 hours it took for him to eat a 12 patty burger and it was HUGEEE and sickening at the same time i only managed half my single and 0 fries.

There's one in Roseville now?! Woohoo... we just drove past the location and didnt notice it (We were heading to the Pizza Hut Sunrise at Cirby ) Thanks for making me and DFi aware!

Thanks to that show we now frequent Twisted Root Burger in Dallas. It's SOOOO good!! :thumbsup2

I've been to Havana Hideout in Lake Worth, FL. They have the best shredded pork tacos. Kind of expensive for a taco, but worth it. You have to eat outside, so I'm waiting for it to cool down so we can go again.

I've also been to Earl's in Chaffee, NY but that was about 30 years ago when I lived up there.

Flakowitz of Boynton is on my list of places to go also.

We live in sac and squeeze in is so good. The grand opening was something else in Roseville:cool1:
