Dimes For Disney

Fun ideas!! In my area, each Coinstar seems to have different gift card options. We drive past a few in order to go to one that has the option we want.

I never used the Coinstar machines because I didn't want to pay a fee but might reconsider now that I know you can get the money as a gift card without a fee! I looked on the Coinstar website & checked which gift cards are offered at our local machines. Two of the three offer an Amazon gift card option. Living in a small town where there aren't a lot of local shopping options, we use Amazon at least once a month. This would be a great alternative to rolling my coins when my popcorn bucket is full!

I've been taking my coins to Coinstar and getting Best Buy gift cards. Then I buy Disney gift cards at Best Buy. I only do $25 or $50 at a time because I'd hate to get stuck with $300 in Best Buy credit that may not work for Disney. We've been saving our change for well over a year and I'm using it to buy Halloween Party Tickets!! We should have over $300.

Yesterday I bought a bottle of water on the way to work. The 1 liter bottle was only .99 so I bought that instead of the 20 oz bottle. As I was drinking the water it got me thinking that I should make the dimes for disney into a game in our family and see who fills the bottle first.

Since it will be harder for the kids to fill them I thought I would have Dh and I each have a 2 liter bottle, I will give my 13 yo dd a 1 liter bottle and our 4 yo dd will have a 20 oz bottle (she will want to be included and it will be hard for her to fill it lol).

I am saving $1 and change for our upcoming trip in December. When me and my husband were dating, we saved change for 3 years and used it to pay for our honeymoon to Disney 15 years ago. I have made it a point to get out cash to use this year and been putting up every $1 I get back and all change towards spending money for this trip.

I saw a Jeff Rossen news story on this recently. Seems that all the Coinstars were accurate but the TD Banks Penny Arcade were wrong consistently. Sometimes a little (5-50 cents) while others were off a lot (over $40!). And never in the customer's favor.

I know I was shorted on more than one occasion, with one time being over $20 (I usually bring the change when I have $300-400 and know approximately what I have due to an accounting process). I said something to the teller, but once the coins are in the counter, how can you prove anything?

We went to a local theme park (knoebels- about 1.5 hrs away) on the 4th of July. Paid for everything in cash & came home with about $5 in change ($1.10 in dimes) :) Plus, I took ds bowling the other day, and they had a change machine so I put a $5 bill in to get change for my disney bucket...lol...it's easier for me to save the change sometimes.
Hope everyone is having a good week!:goodvibes

Awesome! You're doing better than me!

Here's another suggestion that I love- we put every $5 bill into a savings jar. Every time we get a 5 with change, or find one in my bag, or even can change 5 ones for a $5 bill. It adds up fast! I even find myself deliberately using a 10 sometimes just to get the 5, especially as the trip gets closer.

So I'm reviving my old thread to update everyone on how the dimes for Disney bottle worked. We didn't quite fill it up before our trip, but we almost did! I wish I had taken a picture of the bottle before I took it to the bank so I could show you the exact level, it was about 3/4 full, maybe a tad more, and it only ended up being just a little over $300. It was disappointing and I don't think you could ever fit $500 in dimes into a 2-liter bottle. Also, the teller at the bank complained that it took forever to dump into their coin machine but she didn't want to cut the bottle (even though I said it was fine) because of how nicely my daughter had decorated it.

My daughter adopted the dime project and solicited dime donations from every single person that walked in our door for the last couple years--including the solar panel installers! Lol, I'm proud that she is strong willed and independent, I don't ever want her to be a doormat like I am, but sometimes her behavior is a tad embarrassing :) Anyway, I knew I was getting a bonus at work that would mostly pay for a trip to Disney so I started encouraging her more with saving the dimes (in her kid logic, she was convinced that when the dime bottle was full we would go to Disney World), and then the big reveal for the trip was a box full of like $100-some dollars in dime rolls. It was a cute reveal. We just got back from our trip, we had a blast, and my daughter asked to start saving dimes again!

I have saved change for years. Recently our TV died..Just died. No warning. And of course, it was our main TV. So, I had to pull out our change. I brought it to the bank and turned it in. Came back with about$300 (we had not been saving very long) DH was shocked. He knew I saved change, but didn't realize exactly how it all added up. :dogdance:

Will try the dimes...Can't go wrong...Thanks for the tip...

I started my Dimes for Disney 1-liter bottle after reading this thread in July 2016. (We collect our other change in a different container.)
In August 2017 I counted the dimes and had about $30. You can see where I am now in the bottle, still a long ways to go to fill it.
