This may also be an apple to orange comparision with the digital camera being a lower end camera with a narrow range of exposure controls or the camera settings are incorrectly set.
It does bring up a great advantage of a digital camera since you don't use film and the ASA/ISO is controlled by a camera setting where a 35mm film camera is set because of the film used. A digital camera you can change your setting for indoor and outdoor conditions "at the drop of a hat" where a 35mm you must wait until the roll of film is completed to change your ASA/ISO up or down.
